I've been a runner for most of my life and letting my running slide to the back burner was a big part of why I started gaining weight. Reversing that trend was one of my primary goals when I joined Spark, so my fitness program has always been centered around running. I've completed my first marathon since joining Spark and am training for my second marathon now. I mix other activities (yoga, rock climbing, cycling, hiking, snowshoeing) in to my workout schedule to make me a more well rounded athlete... and because they're fun!

I think the biggest piece of advice I can offer somebody just getting started with developing their fitness program is to find something you REALLY enjoy doing. I love running, but I know it's not for everybody. Neither is the stationary bike or the elliptical. Remember that any kind of movement can count as cardio, as long as it gets your heart rate up (and keeps it up). If that's dancing around your living room, while singing to your favorite music, so be it. If you're a social person, you can get this movement in by going to a fitness class or joining a rec sports team. Personally, I struggle a bit more on the strength training side. I find ways to get most of my strength training in through activities I DO find fun (rock climbing and yoga). If you can figure out what it is you really like to do, it'll be SO much easier to actually get that fitness in. Besides, who wants to spend hours every week doing something they don't like?
