Re: barefoot running... No no no, I was a stability-shoe heel strike runner until just a month or two ago. I still consider myself to be in transition!
As for the how, I started out just walking in a pair of Vibram FiveFingers to get used to wearing them, and simultaneously spent a few weeks jump roping to strengthen my calves. Then I started running in my usual motion-control sneakers but focused on landing on the balls of my feet (but with my feet as flat as possible, not toe-running), and I'm just now ditching the padded sneakers for running in the Vibrams.
It's a big switch for sure, and you have to really pay attention to your feet, but it takes so much pressure off your knees and hips that I really think it's worth it! But if you do switch over, start slow - I've heard horror stories about shin splints and stress fractures from folks who jumped right into multiple mile runs without the base-work to build up their calf and ankle muscles.
Good luck!
