Martha's Stuff
Hi! I'm Martha, from Tennessee. I want to learn to maintain a healthy lifestyle and quit doing the yo-yo thing!!! I have always been overweight, except for brief periods of time, (very brief!) when I've lost weight. After having our three children, I just kind of gave up on ever losing weight, except for one semi-successful diet when they were young.

When our first grandchild was born in 1996, I really made an effort to lose weight so that I would be around to see him grow up! In about 18 months, I lost about 140 lbs. Over a 5 year period, I regained around 50-60 of those pounds and have lost and gained some of that a couple of times since then.
I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2002 (big family history of it) and have been trying to learn to stay on a healthier diet to help control it. I have had some good times and some times when I have just been so tired of dieting that I have "rebelled" and just eaten anything I've wanted to!
I have been married since August of 1971 to the love of my life, Mike. We met in high school and married right after I graduated. We were an Air Force family for the first 6 years of our married life. When he got out of the Air Force, he became a police officer in Chattanooga and just retired a few years ago. He now works as a police officer at the airport...much less stress!!!
We have 3 grown daughters and 4 precious grandchildren who are our delight! Mike is now known as PaPoo and I am Mimi.
Our hobbies include bicycle riding, camping and Civil War reenacting! We are in an artillery battery, so our group shoots a big gun! If we don't have enough guys at an event to fill the cannon crew, I have been known to put on my soldier's duds and work on the cannon...lots of fun! Otherwise, I dress like a lady of the time period and don a camp dress or a hoop dress and all the underpinnings! Much easier to dress as a man!!!
Mike and I each took Jesus as our Savior while Mike was stationed in Korea in 1973! He is the hope and strength of our lives and I am so thankful for His love, His mercy and His grace toward me.

My Goals:
My goal is to lose at least 1 pound a week. I want to learn to eat in a "normal" way, to be satisfied with only the food my body needs. I want to be able to control the diabetes by diet and exercise alone, if possible. I want to be consistent with my healthy lifestyle, both the eating and the exercise. I want God to be honored in my body, His temple.
My Program:
I am entering my daily food & exercise into the SparkPeople website to make sure I am staying within my ranges. I am trying to learn how different foods affect my blood sugar so I can get and keep it under control. I participate in the message boards for support (mostly Girls of God) and my husband and I are in this together, which helps!!! We try to ride our bikes about 10 miles 3 -4 days a week and/or work out at the gym.
Personal Information:
My name is Martha and I'm a southern girl from Chattanooga, TN. I've been married to my best friend, Mike, since 1971. We have 3 married daughters and 4 grandchildren. I work at a computer all day for a medical billing firm. We enjoy bike-riding, Civil War reenacting and I LOVE to read, mostly Christian novels, especially historical ones.

It's been a long time. I just popped by to see how you were doing. I believe you left me my first comment on SP back in June 2006.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi!
