My weight loss transformation
After thirty plus years of failed weight loss attempts. Trying to eat healthy, not knowing how adversely artificial sweeteners and added sugar affected me through the years. After thirty plus years of failed weight loss attempts. Trying to eat healthy, not knowing how adversely artificial sweeteners and added sugar affected me through the years. Unknowingly trapped in a sugar/food addiction which caused my hunger issues and unavoidable food eating binges. No matter how determined or how hard I tried I never stood a chance being suffocated by my sugar & food addiction. It was more powerful than I imagined.
I always failed with my weight loss attempts due to when I cut out added sugar I would increase my diet soda and artificial sweeteners substantially. Responsible for my diet soda addiction for over 40 years. I was mistakenly mislead for over 25 years trusting what I read. For example the book sugar busters. Which states it allows artificial sweeteners being perfectly OK when you cut out added sugar. Cut out sugar and cravings for sugar will go away did not work for me. What the book failed to realize is in the real world some individuals are adversely affected by artificial sweeteners more than sugar itself. My past history of cutting out added sugar. left me starving, unstoppable cravings and the unavoidable food eating binges that would follow.
Cutting out all artificial sweeteners January of 2013 found myself feeling considerably better and less hungry at times. I initially lost 50 pounds thinking I found something that might help. Then gained it all back right up to my heaviest again with intense sugar cravings through the summer due to my diet soda addiction. Back to my highest 550 pound weight, I felt considerably better than I had in a long time. Which I contributed to getting the artifical sweeteners out of my system. But still resigned to the fact my weight loss solution remained unsolved. 48 years old at the time, age was catching up, running out of hope and solutions. Always believed I could loose the weight one day but reality was setting in, loosing hope, becoming very scared of my health. Collision coarse of becoming a diabetic, regulated to a wheel chair and early death.
It was constant weight loss effort on my part in 2013. Getting down to about 470 in February back up to 550 in July found myself able to get down to 500 by December. Having artificial sweeteners out of system for almost a year I noticed times I was much less hungry in the colder months. Which I know now was from less artificial sweeteners(diet soda addiction) I started research and found an article on the web that artificial sweeteners may be causing sugar cravings. It was barely enough hope but did prompt me to try another no added sugar attempt. I started a one month no added sugar challenge December 20th not having any idea how having the artifical sweeteners out of my system would factor in. Being a month long challenge I was convinced I could not go any longer than 7 days without treating myself to a bowl of ice cream. It was a tread of hope that in back of my mind was destined for failure. Instead that tread of hope cleared the path and road block to my past food addiction.
December 20th 2013, 500 pounds officially the start of my transformation. Just a couple of days into my no added sugar trial. It was the most surreal feeling in the world to be able to go hours of not being hungry after eating food. Ending the being hungry all the time syndrome. It was not until that moment I realized artificial sweeteners were the constant roadblock It infuriated me, learning artificial sweeteners affected me this horribly but at same time overwhelming relief understanding I just found the solution to my life long weight problem. It suddenly become crystal clear in my mind I freed myself of my sugar and food addiction and nothing was preventing me from loosing all the weight then keep if off forever. Having this inner feeling of just knowing I was going to actually do it this time.
For the first time in my life I understood how food affects my natural hunger, could distinguish thirst from hunger and felt in complete control of my eating habits. My taste buds changed considerably, foods that used to taste bland taste sweet, all of sudden I was craving water as my preferred choice of drink and basically had to relearn my eating habits in absence of added sweetness. Sugar cravings became non existent, realizing the importance of deciding eventually to make artificial sweeteners and added sugar non negotiable for life.
Moving on over five years later April of 2019 the one constant that makes this a very successful transformation is the non negotiable no added sweetness has always been in place. Its been over five years since things like bowls of ice cream, pie, cake or cookies. Don't ever miss them and easiest foods to resist. Having reached a brief low of just under 280 with a badly worn out hip I find myself today around 320 with a new hip and best physical condition of my life. There has been a lot of mini struggles over the five plus years but nothing in comparison to the struggles when trapped in my past sugar addiction.
Moving forward, I have ambitious goals to reach that are geared towards living as long and high quality of life possible. I have learned a lot but its an never ending process. I look forward to areas like intermittent fasting I can expand upon and prefect while continuing to improve my overall nutritional plan. As the weight declines continue to push myself even more with my overall fitness health. Reaching best case scenario goals that maximize joint and cardiovascular health at my most ideal weight range. Its what I am striving for, capable of and well worth all the effort. Keeping all the important tangibles in place while learning new ones to reach end goal. This transformation is far from over so much to improve upon. Its a seven year timeline I want to reach end goal by. Before equally important weight maintenance begins.
