Swimsuit Dillemna

I could use some advice.....

My parents and my brother and his wife were talking about a vacation that my parents planned this summer with my niece, and got talking about whether or not my niece would need a new swimsuit. Mom mentioned that she should try one on now because now's the time to get one (despite the fact that we still have snow on the ground) and that by summer it will be too late.

I am going (knock on wood!!!!) on a cruise with a couple of friends of ours in the fall and I want to look great while I go swimming and enjoy the sunshine. Right now I have a charming swimsuit, but it's the same large size I've been wearing since I've put on weight. Despite trying to lose weight for over a year and trying to eat right and exercise, I haven't gone down a size yet. I've lost roughly 10 lbs--close to a quarter of my total weight loss goal--and I've slimmed through the hips and thighs and bust, but I have this stubborn belly fat that has means I'm still wearing the same old size.

Needless to say, I'm hoping that by fall I will have finally lost enough weight to have gone down at least one size, if not more. But by the time I do, I'm afraid I won't be able to buy a new swimsuit, or at least one that I like.

Should I go ahead and order a smaller size now? Should I go one size smaller, or be optimistic and go smaller? Or am I just asking for trouble?

As the friend you're going on the cruise with who is pondering this same question, consider this... my mom always told me that you had to set goals, but not unrealistic goals. If you keep up the work you are doing now, it's very realistic that you'd be able to fit into one a size down from your current one.

It's a good treat to yourself for achieving a goal, and it's always nice to get the chance to spluge on something new and spiffy for a real vacation... especially if you worked hard to get there.

I was so inspired by what I told you to do that I took my own advice. emoticon

I hung up my old size 14 bathing suit this morning. It's an awesome purple halter tankini that fit 4 years ago and I'm determined to make it fit again!

I've got it hanging from the curtain rod/window next to my bed so it's the first thing I see when I get up in the morning. This morning it made me do my crunches early and skip the extra half serving of cereal.

Ok, my advice is going to differ from the others. If you are ordering your suit online there shouldn't be a problem with getting one when you are ready to buy it. The stores on the other hand, which sell merchandise 3 - 6 months ahead of the actual season will be very picked over by May.

If you want to use the suit to give you motivation great, go ahead and get it now. If you are buying in a store, go ahead and get it now. If you are ordering online and don't want to use it as motivation, pick out a couple of suits you like now and then order your favorite one when you are ready to go.

I know there are people out there who really get motivated by smaller clothing out where they can see it. I'm not one of them unfortunately. It evidently puts too much pressure on my subconscious and I rebel. I never make it into the clothing. Therefore I don't use that motivational too.

Hope you have great fun on your trip!

I think you should go ahead and buy one that you really love in 1 size smaller than you would wear in it now and like VBRESNAN said, leave it hanging in plain site, maybe next to your bedroom mirror or in front of your treadmill (if you have one). It will motivate you. That's something I'm thinking about doing also. I have a size 14 bathing suit that hasn't fit me in about 4 years and I just washed it and I'm going to hang it up later today as motivation to get to that size again.

Go ahead and order a smaller one. Let it motivate you. Leave it hanging in plain sight, as a visual to remind you of your goal. You can do it!
PS: I just bought my first bathing suit in 20 years. I have not allowed myself to wear one for that long! So damn silly. Hawaii beach here I come! emoticon
