New surgeon - new recommendations!

Saturday, July 10, 2010

I finally decided to retain the services of another surgeon's office for my lap band fills/follow up care. The time commitment and high monetary cost to get into Manhattan every four to six weeks was getting out of hand. Plus my boss was getting less than supportive at my missing almost 3 hours of work on the day I had to go to the city. Luckily, given my surgeon's reputation - I was able to transfer to a top rated doc in Long Island for lap band -- even though this new surgeon does not normally accept patients from other surgeons. My new doctor clearly has heard of, and respected, my original surgeon and he gave the green light for the transfer.

Yesterday was my initial visit. I was impressed -- and a new set of eyes on my situation (frequently getting stuck when swallowing foods, not being able to eat anything before lunch, no weight loss for six months) has yielded a new plan of action.

First, even though I have only 3.6 cc's in my band, they determined I was too tight. So, they took out (gasp!) .5 cc . I am to concentrate on three small meals totalling 1000 per day - eating around 80 grams of protein per day.

I also MUST log my food for the next 4 weeks and bring printout to office.

I have to say it is nice not having to struggle and hear gurgling with every bite!

This was not a decision I came to lightly... and I do miss my original doctor to be sure. But I will see him 1x a year on my bandiversary, so that's a good thing! I had absolutely no problems with my original surgeon - in fact he is the BEST - and his office is the BEST too. (By the way, the original surgeon has people fly in from all over the world to see him, and I am sure they don't come back to NY from Brazil or Israel or Turkey every four to six weeks, lol.) It is clear that a percentage of his patients DO go elsewhere for follow up care. I am glad the the top doctor on Long Island agreed to take me on; he normally does not take anyone who has had the lap band installed by anyone else.

Strangely curious as to who you switched from and who you switched to, as I am a true "I love the office" fan of Drs. Fielding, Ren-Fielding, Kurian and Stiles. (aka NYU Weight Loss Management Center). And I live on Long Island and work in CT, so getting to NYC can be a trek at times.

Anyway... what's important is that you're happy with whoever you choose. The best doctors ultimately are the ones you have the best relationship with.

You will be surprised, you will be able to eat the right stuff now and will lose weight. I'm glad you was able to change surgeons so easily.
