Is this thing right??

So I treated myself to a heart rate monitor... been wanting one for awhile. It is a timex and I bought it at the shop where I get my running shoes. I would say it is nothing fancy, although I'm still trying to figure out all of the ins & outs because the guide/instruction books are written in rigamarole. Oh, and it does have one of those chest strap receivers.
Well, Tuesday I finally figured out how to get it to show my heart rate and track my calories burned. It was hidden in all of the rigamarole. Ultimately I have to "run" it in the "chrono" mode (whatever that means).
The 1st workout was fine. I did about 40 minutes and it was a C25K program ... I did pay attention to my heart rates and decided that if it got too close to 180 it was time to just slow down. I also decided I didn't really want to be too far below 140 at any point during my workout. So in 45 mins it said I burned 500 calories. I'm okay with that, and I did have a nice workout (it was a beautiful time to be outside, considering that by afternoon we had some rather severe storms).
2nd workout, cool too. Went to the gym all strapped up. Was a little disappointed that the elliptical didn't pick up the signal from the chest strap. I had heard from someone that some did that. Well, I did a "warm up" & "cool down" on the elliptical with some strength training in between. Total of 45 mins and burned 500 calories. I was satisfied with that one too.
Today was the doozy! I decided it was about time that I got in a "good long one" (ok all you folks with dirty minds, let it go!!). I strapped up and went to the local metropark. 5 miles total. Well I got it done in 65 mins (according to the chrono timer) and burned about 810 calories.
Is that really right?? Just asking....

    When I ride 16 miles on the towpath I burn just over 800 calories.

    I read a great article here on SP about using a HRM during Strength Training. The HRM really work best for cardio. Although you get your heart rate up during ST, you may burn fewer calories due to the fact that you aren't moving your whole body like you are in cardio.

    Otherwise, it sounds pretty close to what mine says for 40-45 minutes of good cardio! Pretty cool, huh?

    Sounds right to me! I use my hr monitor all the time. It's so much more accurate than those machine readings. The elliptical at my gym picks up my heart rate so I don't have to keep looking at the watch. My hr monitor actually said I burned more calories than the elliptical said I burned. I don't think anything is perfect, but a hr monitor is pretty accurate. Sounds like you're doing a great job with the workouts!!!
