Mindful eating (starfish winter challenge blog)

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Mindful eating is the habit that I most want to develop. I do almost all my eating in front of the computer or tv or while I'm reading a book. I never even really taste the food or remember eating it. I got into this bad habit after the kids moved out and I was eating alone.

I also usually eat off paper plates with plastic utensils. It was easier because standing to wash dishes was painful. Now that I'm getting better physically, I'm going to shop for a few beautiful dishes and start using those.

My starting goal (remember I'm a big believer in baby steps) is to eat one meal a day without any distractions and appreciate the food.

One last thing, if you know any websites or stores with beautiful/unusual dishes that sell just 1 or 2, please let me know.

Oh me too. It is very difficult for me to "just eat". I always have a book or have the tv on. I think I will try some baby steps myself. Best wishes,

I went by an antique store in my community (there's actually like 5-10 of them within about a 5 mile radius!!) yesterday with my girlfriend and saw all kinds of partial sets of dishes, like where there was only one or two of a certain pattern or style. So that might be an option, as well as all the other wonderful suggestions you've already received.

.com/ may have some outlet stores near you. We went to one in Katy, TX when we were down for the Thanksgiving holiday visiting kinfolk, and their shelves were lined with gorgeous Coringware and Corelle dish patterns that one could by in singles (as well as the boxes of like 6 or 8 place settings which we ended up ordering online and having shipped home, because the place was a madhouse during the Black Friday event, and we weren't interested in standing in the checkout line for 2 hours even after we found the items we wanted!).

They also had plates in various sizes, ranging from the obvious saucer sized, designed with a specific mug/cup to go with it for hot beverages, to dessert plates, to "luncheon" plates, to the very large dinner plates (around 12" across in diameter). The luncheon plates would be good size to help manage the visual aspect of smaller portions, where one doesn't feel "cheated".

So I'm sure you'll find some great items!!

Curious - how does "starfish" figure into your blog title?? Or maybe I missed something in an earlier blog!

Let us know how the Mindful Eating works out for you.

Walmart where I live has the most amazing dishes that you can buy in singles.

    Ps, I love your blog.

For the beautiful/unique dishes, I would check yard sales, thrift stores or the vintage section on etsy or eBay :-)

This is so something I need to work on as well!!! I'm good at breakfast time, usually, but I'm still eating quickly, because I'm not in front of the TV or computer, but I gotta get going!

Baby steps are good. I will give them a try.

I just broke the habit of eating my lunch in front of my computer doing work. I now make myself go to the break room and sit down with other people and eat my lunch. I find myself eating better foods, cause I don't want people to see me eat junk and I am getting work more done and my papers don't have food stains on them.

I is really hard to break these bad habits, but emoticon !

For dishes I would check out Etsy.com. They have some really nice things sometimes.

I agree so much with you!! I am guilty of eating in front of the tv... It is amazing to me that if I am out with friends and eating I enjoy my food so much more, and I am more satisfied than if I ate the same food at home.... As for the dishes, I agree about going to Thrift store, or Good Will. I also have found some pretty dishes at our Dollar store.... Good for you!!!

This is really a great habit to develop. I think a lot of us try to multi-task during mealtime especially by watching TV or while on the computer. Make it a special time for you. You deserve it. I'm sure you will be able to find some pretty dishes. Enjoy!

I'm a big believer in mindful eating. It makes food so much more satisfying! Attractive dishes are helpful too, & stainless utensils. Be sure to avoid the oversized plates that are common now! It's incredible how huge some of them are.

What a lovely idea. I too spend too much time eating in front of the computer or TV. Great suggestion.

I have the same habit of reading/watching tv etc. when I eat alone so it's not so BORING, but you're right, it's also not very mindful!!

I got some really beautiful paisley dishes I love from Bed Bath and Beyond that I was able to buy individually. I liked it because I was able to get complimentary bowls, salad paltes, etc. but didn't have to go in for a whole "set" or even all one thing (I also got matching greens and blues). My other really fun dishes are from Pier 1 (which also sells individual ones), Cost Plus (also individual) Pottery Bar, Crate & Barel and then just lucky finds at places like Ross and Thrift stores. I like for my dishes to "go" together, but I never get more than 2 of the same one. I'd get too bored!

Mindful eating is big thing! I'm learning not to keep any food near my recliner/desk area because it's so easy to just reach and eat... and if I did have something nearby, when I've had enough, I hand it to my hubby to put out of my reach for the moment, and eventually put away.

    Love babysteps!
