Junk Food in the House; No Problem...

Thursday, February 23, 2012

...That is until the package is opened.

Mindless snacking was a lifelong habit that I needed to overcome. Although I was able to make some progress toward that end, there were some notable failures. Remember the "Chocolate Dusted Almonds" I admitted to a couple weeks ago.

One of my strategies for living with a compulsion to eat when I am not actually hungry is substitution. I reach for a bag of frozen whole string beans when I feel like I'm going to give in. You can't eat them as fast as popcorn. They don't give you that sugar rush and crash. You have to chew them a bit to get the flavor and they are easy to handle when they are frozen. If you do get carried away and eat a pound or so- no harm, no foul. They are just low calorie, no fat, no artificial anything, high fiber, good for you.

Of course frozen string beans are not for everyone, but anyone should be able to find some stand-in for junk food in those eat 'til its empty moments.
