When I run, it is for myself. I'm not fast or competitive, and I'm not trying to impress anyone. I'm glad I live in a rural area with lots of dirt roads and little traffic.
I have noticed that since I started running well enough to even bother looking at my watch and logging my times, those times are better on the days when a few cars pass me. It seems that when I hear the sound of a car echoing up the valley, I pick up my pace a bit. I wasn't even conscious that I was doing it until today.
