Help motivate me to lift weights!

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

I bike, walk, practice yoga, and swim, but everything I'm reading says lifting weights/strength training is very important. I whine about this all the time, but I'm not motivated enough to climb the steps at the fitness center and go up to the weight lifting area. I'm there already. It wouldn't have to take long. I'm not horrified by lifting. My friends lift. Wah!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, I'm lifting again. I have a plan from Ernest, a personal trainer, and I'm going to lift 3 times a week starting next week.

Maybe if you joined a group where there are people of a similar age, you might feel less intimidated and more inclined to try it. My mum's just turned 82 and attends the gym where as a group they lift weights and do strength exercising. She really loves it. the bonus is that as well as strengthening your muscle groups, it has such an overwhelmingly positive effect on your mind and spirit, hard to put into words, you really just need to try it a few times, not just once. Go on, give it a go. I promise you you'll be glad that you did. Look forward to hearing how it goes. Good luck.

Its funny how different we all can be when we all pretty much want to achieve the same goal! I actually love strength training. I feel so good when I am done. It feels so awesome when I lift a weight that one extra time when I think my muscles are going to burst.

I think the main thing to do here is to set a schedule that is reasonable and follow it. Don't let anything keep you from it, just like you wouldn't let anything but an emergency or illness keep you from going to work.

I printed off some of the strength training exercises from SP including the pictures that show you the correct form. I take that with me to the gym and follow it. It works for me.

I'm ordering some resistance bands so I can workout at home. Every time I start going to the gym I end up catching every cold and flu there is no matter how diligent I am about cleaning machines before I use them. Yuck.

Check out a few of the Sparkpeople videos about using them.

I tried the gym membership and it was ok - but I would just as soon do my workout at home. I didn't like sharing the space with all the testosterone when I was there. I have hand weights in 5, 10 and 20 and the bands etc. I have my little bench and exercise ball to sit on etc. I find I enjoy it more if I do them at home. Now I just need to get back to do them. Let's just do it! Let's just start today! LET'S START TODAY! Please check up on me and I will check up on you! We know all the benefits - start small WIN BIG!!! Come on!! emoticon I can do it! I'm supposed to do Strength Training on M,W, and F. Today's Wednesday ....... I will check in later with you!!!

I hate strength training, so I had to get a personal trainer to make me do it. All in all, I love the affects of the strength training. My body feels so much stronger, I don't have sagging skin (yet), I can feel and see definition in my arms from my muscles being so much stronger, my metabolism is higher, I lose more weight because I am burning more calories. And so much more. But the one thing I love the most about strength training is that it is another tool of measurement for getting healthy and fit. I get to watch the number on the dumbbells increase and/or the numbers of reps I can do increase. I can actually see myself becoming more fit and healthy.
