Thanksgiving is NOT about the Turkey Feast!

Thursday, November 22, 2012

emoticon We were getting ourselves all wrapped up in the big meal planning, shopping, prepping. Feeling like it was a big pain when we were all alone for Thanksgiving this year...just hubby and I, and the dog. Then it seemed like the big thing about the holiday was the Feast.
When reality smacked me upside the's not about the food on the table, but who is around the table.
So while we were moaning about our two daughters, and three grandsons, 1 Son-in-Law not being here today....we still have them with us.
My husband has had a rough year and a recent surgery, but he's here. Our oldest daughter's car was totaled in an accident last month...but they all survived with minor injuries. Our youngest daughter was home for almost all of October, and can't come for Thanksgiving, but will be home for Christmas.
So having them all, happy, healthy is the first thing to head the list of things I'm grateful for.

I am feeling the loss of my parents, my sister, Husbands parents, dear friends, and in June, I lost a Beloved Aunt. But the memories of them tied to Thanksgiving and Christmas are all good memories. So I'm counting them in the things I've been blessed with.

You know, when you actually start listing all that you are blessed to have had, and what you still have...the list is immense.

So I am wishing you a day where your list of gifts, are greater than all the food on your table. Happy Thanksgiving! emoticon

Yes, I agree it is important to be thankful for the things/people in our lives. I remember there were times when I felt grumpy as a teenager, hearing the song "Count Your Blessings", then started to count them. I was grumbly when I first began counting - but my grumbly mood did not last long after I'd listed my blessings. Thanks for the reminder emoticon .

So very true, we do have lots of blessings. I am the same way, missing my parents, many friends gone now, and relatives too. Cherishing the memories and having a special day with those that can come for the special thanksgiving dinner is my way
of handling it. My son will not be home for Christmas (he lives in NY, I'm in OH) and I was so sad about it,but then realized, I am lucky in so many ways. My family and friends are a great gift. My brother will be in town from CO. My sister, thank goodness is still here and We talk almost every day. My grandkids are a joy. Your three boys are so beautiful and I know you love them to pieces. Well, got to get going to church, so hope your Thanksgiving was memorable. Keep in touch. Two weeks will go fast, so in case we do not connect, Happy Christmas to you, dh and family. emoticon

This is so true! We didn't have any family here with us - but they are well, healthy, happy, and two of our kids were together in Italy, the other two were together in New York City. We are blessed beyond measure and that is the whole purpose of Thanksgiving, right? To count our blessings and give thanks! Your blog was a blessing to me and I want to say emoticon

Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for your good wishes. You're so right that it isn't about the food. I was fortunate to have most of my family around today, and a long talk with DD and DGGD this evening on the phone. Wonderful day!

Very well said, Theresa. We really should be thankful every day, because if our family or friends are with us physically or just mentally or have gone "home", they are still with us, because of our greatest memories of them.

I love your blog. . .and I have a big list myself of "gifts" I've been blessed with. I wish I would have had a little more willpower as overate big time today. I'm hoping Pyne will have a better year but you have been blessed with a beautiful family and I know you're as thankful for them as they are for you, Pyne and little Finch. Thank you for putting Thanksgiving Day's feast into perspective and I know I have so much to be thankful for this year. Take care dear friend. I count you among my blessings.

    Hugs & Love,

You are so right, Theresa, it;s not what is happening right now it about the memories and life as we cope.
May you enjoy the day, and look forward to a bigger family gathering at Xmas.
After fixing some appetizers, I am relieved not to have to fix the large family dinners I or my Grandmother used to fix.
The family as got so large, everyone contributes.
Even though some will be absent, they are remembered.
    Hugs Tisha emoticon emoticon

Thank you so very much, Theresa! You are right on the mark and so many of us have such amazing things to be thankful for, including me! Have a wonderful day with Pyne and may we all practice thinking about our list of gifts being greater than the food on the table! emoticon emoticon
