Week 5, Coober Pedy and beyond, Penguins too

It was sad to say goodbye to the wonderful town locals who quickly became our friends. But I am so glad to one again be heading to where the dirt and grime is gone and get back to the wonderful salty air. Some people were made for the desert and enjoy it and wouldn't want to live anywhere else but give me the trees and the seas and mountains. It makes me come alive again. I just have to get through one more night at Coober Pedy. What a strange name---It is so hot there that the city is built underground. They took parts of old mines and built there homes down under. It is also the Opal Capital of the world. Tonight we will stay in a hotel that is all underground. I would have preferred to sleep in the van but Joanie dared me to do it. So me, not liking to be in closed in spaces spent the night. Did I enjoy it---Not--- I don't care for musty smells but I did it and now I can share the braging rights.
Here is a link that shares all about the town

I think the one thing I enjoyed learning is how while living down underground it is like having their own bank vault. If they need money they dig another room to find opals. Cash them in and Look , money! Now that is not bad.

The next morning we head to Lake Erie. Really bumpy unsurfaced roads. Now that can be fun in a camper. Joanie, Gloria and I are singing at the top of our lungs bouncing down the road. I am sure we scared every red kangaroo for miles around. Lake Erie is a salt sink and has many migrating birds . I enjoyed seeing all the wildlife but the very best was the evening sunset.

We are on our way to Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. Oh my, city lights, shopping, chocolate yes, I think I have died and gone to heaven----We can't wait to hit the store but first we want a nice hot shower with lots of running water.

We stayed here on the bay.

A few pictures of this fantastic city

We enjoyed our stay here. I spent way to much money , bought some really pretty outfits and enjoyed shopping at the market. We did the city tour which I will remember forever. And last, but not least we got to take a horse drawn tram over to Granite Island to see the fairy penguins.

At night we got to see the parade of penguins as they come back in from the sea. It was quite a site to see

I'm a little claustrophobic so don't think I'd sleep a wink underground. . .I'm not a desert person either as that's way too hot and dry for me. Thank you for writing a wonderful blog sharing your "underground" adventure. I hope you'll be going on another Trek soon as you enjoy them and they are healthy for you. Loved the pictures you shared and the Fairy Penguins are just too precious for words, one of God's miracle creations.

    Hugs & Love,

Gail - We didn't divert to Lake Erie - that was too far away - only a few thousand miles!! we went to Lake Eyre..
It was a fun week though and Adelaide provided a nice stop off after all the bush travel and camping!!

emoticon I actually enjoyed the Underground City. In the heat of Oklahoma's Summer it would be a Very Welcome place to spend some time!!
In a lot of ways I will be sorry to see this Trek ending. I used to think I was a City Girl, but after the past few weeks, I am starting to think I have some Gypsy Blood in me, LOL!!
    emoticon Great Blog!!
