Self-Compassion (Days 18 & 19)

Wednesday, August 19, 2015

While researching self-compassion advice, I came across this article on Psychology Today’s website:

I decided to reflect upon each of the 26 Ways to Love Yourself More:

1. Drop Self-Judgment.
I am in recovery from brain surgery. It will take an indefinite amount of time to heal. Just be patient with myself during the process.

2. Stay Present.
Rely on intuition when making major decisions. Enjoy and cherish the good moments.

3. Do What Brings You Energy.
Spend time with my son and my friends. Go hiking. Listen to music. Sing. Sketch. Paint. Write. (Add to this list).

4. Put Self-Care First.

5. Allow for the Hurts.
Fear. Anxiety. When things go wrong unexpectedly.

6. Be Your Own Reliable Companion.
Good to remember this one.

7. Show Up for Yourself.
This one, too.

8. Start with Boundaries.
I’m doing better with boundaries. I’ve let go of people who aren’t capable of loving or respecting me.

9. Say YES to Yourself.
I want to take better care of myself. I just have to figure out how.

10. Let Yourself Fail.
Been there. Done that. Move on.

11. Tell the Truth.
How authentic am I being at any given point? Should I stop pretending that everything’s okay?

12. Remember: You are Born Innocent.
I mean well, and my intentions are good.

13. Ask Good Questions.
What would help right now? -- Therapy. (I was finally able to start today).
What do you need most? -- Time. Patience. Help.
What are your biggest challenges? -- I’m not sure where I’m going. I feel lost and scared. I’m not able to make any long-term plans.

14. Tame Your Inner Self-Talk.
Working on it.

15. Put Your Oxygen Mask on First.
Right now I’m trying to figure out what actually comprises my “oxygen mask.”

16. Choose to Swim.
"I think there is a moment when you’re in the deepest depths of despair where you have to make a choice of whether you’re going to save yourself and swim towards the surface, or just let yourself drown. I chose to swim, and from that moment on I started learning how to take care of myself." – Susannah Conway

Will reflect on this in a later blog.

17. Be Your Own Perfect Mother.
I am a mom, but I’m uncomfortable with this concept, because I never had a mom.

18. Practice Moment by Moment.
This is the epitome of what I need to do.

19. Forgive Yourself.
Will have to return to this idea later...

20. Allow for the Unpredictable.
A lot of things in my life are unpredictable. This is part of why I’m scared and anxious.

21. Discover Your Weird.
I actually feel confident about this ;)

22. Say “I’m Sorry.”

23. Recognize You're Not Alone.
I need to be more open to this concept.

24. Be Kind.
Another good blog idea: Ways to Be Kind to Yourself.

25. Accept It All.
And then keep going.

26. Stop Expecting Perfection.
I’ve done pretty well with this recently. I still have high standards for what I want out of life, but I’m also realistic. I just want to feel better.
