It's a good day for a salad.

This spring, I really wanted to grow my own vegetables, but I live in a tiny apartment with no yard for a garden. I decided to make my own container gardens lined up against the back wall of the building. I used 3 plastic storage bins, drilled holes in the bottom and around the bottom of the sides. Then I put rocks in the bottom to help with drainage, and filled them up with organic soil. In one bin, I planted small cucumbers, and some broccoli. In another container, I planted short and sweet carrots, and a variety of lettuce. In the third container, I planed a few small pepper plants. I also planted a tomato plant in a 5 gallon plastic container. I think for my first try at growing my own veggies, I did pretty well! The cucumbers thrived all summer. I have been able to harvest 3 heads of tasty, healthy lettuce. The carrots didn't all come up, but the ones that did, grew really well. We just harvested our first head of broccoli. My peppers are just about ready, and my tomatoes are starting to fruit as well. I think today, I will make a great big salad for my whole family. Besides my homegrown veggies, I will add a left little leftover turnip I have, and some baby spinach, and maybe some hard boiled eggs and a light sprinkle of cheese. My mouth is watering already. :)
