Exercise matters more than you think

One thing I hate about the weight loss journey is how easy it is to gain the weight back, but harder to lose. I can't tell you how many times I've stepped on the scale and been excited about the number going down, only to have it go up a day or a week later. Frustrating to say the least. However, I've also noticed that if I don't exercise enough, the weight creeps back up.
So Super Bowl was this past weekend, and the in-laws throw a party every year. The usual spread if crackers/chips, cheese and veggies with dips, boneless wings, deli platter, and cole slaw/potato salad. Oh, and of course, desserts. Thankfully fruit salad is one choice among other not so healthy options.
So I exercised earlier in the day, but only about 1/3 of what I've normally been doing. Little guy even got in on the game when I was doing tricep dips off the arm of the couch. So I ate pretty well the whole day. Had some healthy lunch to so I wouldn't gorge. I ate a bunch of turkey, some of the lettuce, a bunch of carrots, some celery. Stayed far away from the huge rolls and the other crackers, and the cheese. I'm picky about cheese, so that wasn't as hard. However, the desserts were doom to anyone trying to be healthy. A cookie cake in the shape/design of a football field. A Carvel Fudgie the Whale cake (someone's birthday), and some chocolate melt pie thing with "high gluten" flour. Yeah, it actually said "high gluten." I had a tiny bit of the ice cream cake along with some fruit.
I was also snacking right before bed, albeit on dark chocolate sunflower seeds. I'm not sure if the less-than-normal exercise or the just before bed snacking did it, or both, but the pounds came back. Nothing terrible, but it's taken quite a bit fo me to get past losing my first five pounds, so to gain some back is frustrating.
