Soles4Souls 5K Fun Run
Saturday, October 13, 2018
For several seasons of 5% Challenges, one of my goals was to run a 5K in 2018. Today I met that goal by participating in a fund-raising, shoe-gathering, local fun run.
I can't say that I found it a "fun" experience because the wind was blowing between 30 and 40 miles per hour, which made running against the wind quite difficult. The course was partially on the high school track, then up and around a grassy field with rough terrain.
Despite less than ideal conditions, I am still pleased with my time of 43:18. I was under my maximum time of 45:00 minutes, and even though I couldn't follow my plan because of conditions, I used my HR monitor to guide my recovery periods.
My biggest success was going to the event and participating on my own, without a buddy. I haven't participated in an organized race for four years, so it was good to break through my reluctance.
Since I'm in farm country, my prize was a 4-pound bag of refined sugar. I have to appreciate the irony of such a prize for a health-based event.
But I'll actually use it for holiday baking.
