Ten Years on Spark People!
Friday, January 10, 2020
I've taken a few days off from work and the family has all returned home. (We had a wonderful week together with lots of fun and celebration.) The Christmas tree is undecorated and taken to the tree pile for later burning. The twelve days of Christmas are past and we have entered the time of Epiphany. And so, I'm taking some time for reflection.
It was in January of 2010 that I read a weight loss article in Good Housekeeping magazine and first discovered Spark People. Ten years ago I began making the changes that I needed to finally lose and keep off the excess weight that had, in many ways, affected every aspect of my life.
Why did SparkPeople work for me when nothing else had? After all, I already understood nutrition and exercise and knew what needed to happen. My problem was that I couldn't seem to translate the knowledge into action. And Spark helped with that. Tracking food was the number one key to success, but the friendship and accountability provided by other Sparkers were also very important. With the support of others, I learned about C25K and took up running for the first time in 20 years. I found such comfort and inspiration in reading blogs and posts from people who were facing the same struggles.
I maintained my initial weight loss for eight years. As my friends know, I've gained back ten pounds in the last couple of years, and have hip problems that have curtailed my running, much to my dismay. But, I have not given up! I'm still here, and still intent on making healthier choices. I plan to lose the extra ten pounds. I've found other forms of exercise. And I am going to do all I can to stay as healthy and fit and active as possible for the next ten years--and beyond.
