Steer Your Way

Saturday, January 18, 2020

Taking a lovely afternoon bath with my favorite, self-curated playlist ("Pensive Afternoon") when on came this song from Leonard Cohen's last album.

Steer your path through the pain
That is far more real than you
That smashed the cosmic model
That blinded every view
And please don't make me go there
Tho' there be a god or not
Year by year
Month by month
Day by day
Thought by thought

So this song (and album) was crafted by Cohen as he knew he did not have long to live. The lyrics and tone are heavy and much more far-reaching I think than a focus on health. But in coping with worldwide woes as well as our personal ones, the message holds true:

Year by year
Month by month
Day by day
Thought by thought

That's how we cope, how we struggle and survive large grief, feelings of helplessness about the world and, yes, our personal struggles with the Big Cupboard Filled with Magical and Dangerous Treats in the pantry.

At least, that's what works for me.

Wishing you well and joy on your path today.

"Steer Your Way" by Leonard Cohen

PPS: Does anyone else sing in the bathtub? Cry in the bathtub? Sing and cry in the bathtub at the same time?

LC's late work (Old Ideas and You Want it Darker) strikes me to the core! I have yet to listen to Thanks for the Dance.I expect it will do the same.

Something about being in the water . . . I allow myself or find myself breaking down in the bath; I've also many times found myself laughing in the ocean, but never the pool.

It DOES start with our thoughts - everything in our lives seem to stem from that! (And I will confess to singing in the shower, although not well, and the occasional bout of tears!)

The lyrics are beautiful and haunting. As is your photo. Not familiar with Leonard Cohen’s later work. I will have to explore. And, oh, those Magical and Dangerous Treats! Love it. Thanks for sharing.

I have not sang or cried in the tub recently. I am thankful that I don't want to cry.

It's been years since I've done either. Since I live in an apartment building, I don't want to scare the neighbors.

Ah, the great Leonard Cohen. Love the album. Each thought we carry with us makes us who we are - And, no I don't sing in the tub, but I do cry in the shower.

Thanks for sharing, the lovely poem and picture. And yes I have done both sing and cry in the tub. But not usually at the same time unless the song sparks a sad memory.
