Gut Feelings?

Gosh, I love Spark People!

I've been doing Spark Trivia most mornings - mainly to get the points!

But today, one that I got wrong caught my eye - and took me off down the www rabbit-hole!

I thought serotonin was only to do with the brain - important in treating depression etc. But I learned today that it is also produced in the intestines, where it has a very important role to play.

Of course, I've come across the stuff about the healthy micro-biome before - how the microbes in our gut are controlling us! But apart from trying to eat as clean as possible - I haven't done much about it. I suppose, like a lot of internal changes, they're not easy to see - it's not easy to spot the effects of change.

Also, I don't like fermented vinegary foods much. I went to a Polish cafe the other day and had a vegan Bigos - which was very vinegary with sauerkraut - I didn't like it much.

However, on the Ayurvedic team I'm on, we're going through a book called Body Thrive - and I found that one of my motivations was to have a clean colon. The link above is for vegan gut-friendly recipes.

I think the time has come for me to take this more seriously.

    My father drank a glass of water with a tablespoon of vinegar in it daily and he lived healthy until he died at age 97. I think there is something to it. I enjoy pickles, sauerkraut, and kombucha but simply haven't found a kimchi that I can stand. On occasion I have glass of water with a tablespoon of cider vinegar. It helps when I have heartburn too. Lots to try Gill; you will probably find something you like.

    I'm with you on the sauerkraut, kimchee, etc. I knew a couple who would take a spoonful of cider vinegar and one of yogurt daily.

    I have been treating for my IBS for years. I do eat yogurt daily. I eat sauerkraut often. Good info, Gill.

    Kombucha is my favourite probiotic, I make it at home, and since drinking it regularly, my digestion is much better. I get a little to no flatulence after eating pulses like beans and lentils etc. Kombucha is my mid-afternoon cocktail to boost my energy and refresh me. I am a big fan of probiotics in general and Kombucha in particular. It is true most probiotics are vinegary in taste, sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi. Kombucha is acidy, but, in my opinion, the least vinegary tasting of this list. It tastes like fizzy apple cider to me, is effervescent, tart, and slightly sweet. It is awesome for satisfying thirst in the summer heat or after sweating a lot from a workout. Another benefit of kombucha for me is that if I crave sugar and I have a glass of kombucha, it takes sugar craving away, makes sugar unappealling, kind of the same way as when after brushing teeth, orange juice is unappealling. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox, as you can see I am a huge fan of kombucha.

    I checked out that site for the gut-friendly vegan recipes and found it very cumbersome with all of the advertising, but here is my take on what I saw:

    If you eat clean and vegan (as you already do, Gill) you don't have anything to worry about! Many of the food items they listed as pre- and pro-biotics I bet you already eat such as non-daily yogurt, kefir, garlic, onions, apples, bananas, beans & legumes, oats, cacao.

    My advise (IMHO) is don't fall for all of that hype and worry about it. I know you already are eating very healthy!

    Thanks for the link Gill, I love sauerkraut and kimchi but eat them sparingly because of salt content. Interestingly, miso tends not to affect blood pressure so I often incorporate it into sauces for vegan dishes.
