Singing to Mama!
Sunday, April 05, 2020
For over a month I’ve been planning the celebration! Long before social distancing and isolation came on the scene, I was planning a special day for my mother. We have made many changes, but it will still be a very special day.
We sang Happy Birthday and put our cards on her window. Mom was able to SKYPE with us, and then we will all went our separate ways. I miss hugging my mother and holding her hand. Still, this as to be the first time since March 14th that I’ve been able to see her face and I’m going to take that as a positive.
There were 6 of us singing Happy Birthday together under the birdfeeder at the nursing home. It felt good to be with family on an important date. The singing and the visit went well. Mom did not understand what was going on, but her CNA took her over to the window and sit down while we talked and sang. A SKYPE was set up, and mom got to hear our voices and see our faces.
This was a bittersweet experience for me. I was happy to see my mother and sing to her. I was sad knowing that she didn’t really understand until the end.
I was unable to get a picture of the day since my phone was used for the SKYPE. The nursing staff took a photo for me, and I hope to share it once I receive the photo!
