Can I Do It Again?

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Hi Friends.

I'm not sure if I've ever had more than a 2 month hiatus from SparkPeople, but I did. And the good news is, I'm at the same point as I was when I wrote my last blog. That's also the bad news. No real progress just a lot of losing and gaining the same pounds.

However, I've been reflecting a lot on my weight loss in college. I was in graduate school. I was taking 12 hours of classes and working as a graduate assistant. And I had a great schedule. I'd pack my lunch, get a workout in before, after or in between classes and work.

So as I look back on the past 4 years and my inability to reach any major weight loss goals, I know the one thing that worked best for me. Routine.

Routine is a hard thing to master with a 3 year old who is constantly wanting to do something new every day. It's an excuse I know, and I'm hoping that I can stop making it.

I was accepted into a Master's of Statistics program. I'd like to teach college math some day, but because my first Master's is in Education, I'm not qualified to teach math, only education courses. I was also offered a graduate teaching assistantship which means my tuition will be covered and I will also receive a stipend for teaching courses. I've worked out what my schedule should be for the fall and I think having a routine is going to help me hopefully be more successful. I'll have a 45 minute gap between my classes which is more than enough time to get in a good walk. And actually my campus has a tunnel system that will allow me to walk regardless of the weather outside. I think I'll also be better about packing lunch and making dinners ahead of time. That's my hope at least. The school year begins in August, pending any issues with Covid. I may be teaching from home, which will change things a bit, but either way, I'll have to have a set schedule and hope that I can manage to actually finally get control of my weight again.

As for those of you checking in who read my blog about my miscarriage, it's been 3 months and I'm still not pregnant. So that's been depressing and taking a toll on me, but I just have to have hope. So that's what I'm doing right now. Having hope that I will someday have another child, and having hope that I will be able to lose the weight again.

Thanks for your continued support SparkFriends.

I am late in reading this but I hope you are still doing well. You did so much better than me as I left and came back to SparkPeople 5 times and I mean I deleted everything 5 times. This time I am hopeful about sticking with it and so far I have lost 20 pounds so I am hanging in.
The one thing I have learned as I face turning 63 this year is that life has a way of working out just as you need it too. God always has a hand in everything. I messed up every time I tried to force things to be the way I thought they should be, now I know when I give the reins to God - he has a way better plan, including losing the weight I need to lose.

Back here at SP after being absent for some years, and glad to see you are still around!
It seems you have had some difficult times (so sorry for your loss), but inspiring to see that you are still keen on losing the weight again. I need to start all over again, having gained the 50 pounds I lost some years ago. But it needs to be done, I need to be a healthy parent and also I want to live a healthy and active live, so I should try and avoid getting any of the weight related diseases while I still can!
So happy to accompany you on your journey, and you are right routine is everything!! Just do it and don't think about it, don't give yourself a choice.
    Let's go!!!

hey there, I remember you... I think the last time I talked to you Henry was about 6-10 months, how about that?I remember his name... because that name isn't so common anymore. I think I sent you a card when you graduated.

It's lousy and pretty tough having a miscarriage ( heartbreaking ), but it's easier to take than when one is very far progressed into a pregnancy (which happened to use years ago )/ so I get it.

I know you will get stronger and healthier for a sibling. It will happen. They told to go for 1-6 months... but we were in a better place later. He is all grown up now.

You have always been a go getter. And prayer will give you peace.

I moved to another state... which it seemed that you had done.

You seemed to have adjusted faster than I. This is probably because I am in a small town now, not in a large city. I thought it would be easier to make friends.

Love to you and your family, Sue

I had done some teaching too, but in math, I was the lest proficient.

We're living in very strange times right now. I think the uncertainty is hard on everyone. Having a routine is so important to me as well, and since I am now semi-retired, I haven't quite figured it all out. I wish you the best of luck in your new endeavor! Congratulations on your acceptance into the graduate program!!!! I am excited for you and all the new opportunities you will have as a result.

I've been slacking these past couple of months as well. Back on as of yesterday - tracking all my food and planning how to get some steps in later today. Congratulations on school - both being accepted and teaching!! Having those routines really does help. I work in an accounting firm and know when our busy time comes around, it's almost easier because I meal plan, pack my lunch, etc. emoticon

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for sharing all you did. You totally nailed what it is we need to work on (routine!) and know it's possible! (Thanks for reminding me!)

I also work in schools. Getting ready to meet with staff tomorrow and throughout the coming week on our building plan for reopening. No small task for parents and educators. It sounds like you are putting so much energy into your family and work, and I hope the same for energy dedicated to YOU! :) I wish you the best.

To be honest, having an active 3 yr old and working on a Master's degree, plus a husband to take care of is really more than enough IMO, so getting preg again at the moment seems like "overload." But people like us do that. We overload ourselves and then nothing really gets accomplished. I had children at 34, 37, 39 and 41, so you have lots of time to have another baby. Focus on getting your career goals done while you have the chance and enjoy your 3 yo as he won't stay little long. (Oh, I had a boy at 25, so my husband had HIS boy) .

I remember how hard it was to get into a routine once I had children and working full time while taking night classes. You can do it! Stay positive and don't beat yourself up. Enjoy the journey and everything will work out for you. emoticon

Good to hear from you. I admire the identification of your personal sabatour in controlling your weight & diet. Routine is a blessing when it works to your benefit, but be careful that routine doesn't rob your of your spontenacity and creativity. Flex when needed, cause you are entering an intense program that you certainly do not want to add a lot more stress.

Wonderful to know that you are stepping up again and I know emoticon

I am so sorry about the loss of your baby. I can't imagine how hard that must have been for you. You seem like a very strong woman. You sound very motivated to get in some exercise and lose the weight. I know that you can do it. You just have to set your mind to do it like you set your mind on your degree goals. I am so impressed with your schooling. Statistics is not easy. Well, it wasn't easy for me when I was in college. I hope that you get pregnant soon. I think once you forget about it then it will happen for you but that is only my opinion. You will be busy with college and then you get pregnant lol. All in time my dear. All in time.

Routine helps me a lot, and if I break my routine, I have ended up giving up until I hate myself so much I start again. Plan B is helpful. I've been babysitting my great nephew the last 5 years, and if I don't have time for my regular exercise, we have a dance track we do together, or he runs laps around the dining room table pretending to be different animals while I do seated exercises from my wheelchair. It IS harder to have hildren involved, but be creative and flexible and you can do this. You can do this!

Routines help, but sometimes I am so stuck in my routine that if anything changes, even for a day, I give up some self-care and itโ€™s usually exercise. I need to set up a plan B.

    Big virtual hugs to you.

And listen to Polskarenia 3 months is the minimum time for safety - optimum can take a little longer and will be worth it for the health of both you and your baby.

We already know you can drop the lbs. And your self-reflection showed you some of the valuable steps you can take. Enjoy the mental stimulation of college and teaching and keep on chasing Henry around the back yard. One of these days he'll out-run you.

    You have this.

One step at a time. Maybe start with Nutrition Tracker and later add exercise.
Pushing a 3 yr. old in stroller every day should be sufficient exercise.

Good to hear from you again. I think there are many of us that get into that rut of gaining and losing the same pounds. I hope a firm routine helps you with "gaining" a knowledge of what's going to work for you as the yrs. continue to slow us down. Relax, enjoy and try not to worry. God is good.

It is great to hear from you again and when you have a child or children at home it is very hard to find the me time to work out and stay on track. Time goes so fast that a lot of our meals were on the run and not really thought out. Maybe with your schedule this fall you will be able to be in control. I wish you luck with everything and as far as a new baby is concerned, relax, all in good time or should I say Gods time. emoticon emoticon emoticon
