Are you in the zone?

Wednesday, October 21, 2020

Am I pushed to exercise by my own motivation, or by the push of another person or a device? That’s easy ... by ME!

This week, my Fitbit asked me to sign up for a new tracking piece - in essence, time in the cardio zone. Will this motivate me? Honestly, no.
If you have a device, here is more info: blog.fitbit.com/
active-zone-minutes/

I KNOW I don’t get enough cardio. My walk has few hills or stairs. Even when I belonged to a women’s exercise centre, and paid extra for the heart rate fob, it really wasn’t a motivator for me. Some days I worked hard, and other days, not so much.

My heart knows how to pace itself! My resting heart rate is in the low 50s, and my sleeping HR, in the low 40s. The charts say I’m in the athlete zone. Too funny! I used to be an athlete, but I’m far from that now. I think I’m part turtle!

Do I need a bootcamp drill sergeant yelling at me? Nope!
Do I need my HR device pointing out my “under-achievements?” Nope!
Do I need anyone shaming me for what I eat or weigh? Definitely, no!

I have chosen to walk 10,000 steps daily. Some people walk less, and some walk more, but that is not MY goal. We are all unique individuals and need to set our own goals and challenges. I recently blogged about doing more strength exercises. It didn’t last. Oh well. I’m still doing my 10,000 steps and that will have to do. No apologies. I’m doing what is sustainable. We can always do more, but sometimes that just becomes a burden and a compulsion, and can lead to quitting. I’m in MY zone, and it may or may not include cardio minutes. I’m good with that.

A friend, and fellow Fitbit user, walked with me for three days this summer and our steps, heart rates, and distances measured were completely different! Don’t compare! Just do it, but be happy with your effort. I am! (My elliptical does get my HR up, but that is only when it is too nasty to go outside.)

My goal is 10,000 steps per day also. It was easier when I had a fitbit. I now use Samsung Fitness on my smart phone, and it does not count steps as generously as my fitbit devices did.

This is an excellent, well written blog.
You have stated perfectly that we need to be in our OWN zone and do it for ourselves. That's the only path that is sustainable.

I always come to read (and re-read) your posts because your success in losing weight, so I get inspired. The gadgets are good but they had their mistakes. Last year, I was in a Salsa class sweating a lot. The teacher instructed us to do some stylists big arm movements and my Fitbit registered them as swimming! emoticon
Enjoy whatever you are doing and is good to you!

Wonderful attitude! You don't have to do anything that doesn't resonate with YOU. I lost 100 pounds without doing a single workout. It was only once the extra weight was off that I felt capable of even trying it, and I had been very ANTI-exercise for 30 years. One day I just decided it was time to go for a walk so I did. Now I work out six days a week. Two of those are strength training, four are cardio (plus my eight hours of retail work steps, which work out to be between 3.5 and 4.5 miles a day on top of my morning workout sessions).

I've had people tell me to cut out my morning workouts on work days, but I love them and don't want to. My body loves celebrating that it has the ability to do that. So I do it because it works for ME. If a particular day comes up when I am too tired, I will rest. Neither of us has to get locked into an all-or-nothing mindset.

Obviously your routine works for YOU, so keep on doing it! You can always modify later if YOU decide to...or not! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Your blog couldn't have come at a better time as I started using my Fitbit info more this week to monitor my activities better. Funny thing about these activity wrist bands is that they don't always know what our intentions are!

Yesterday my afternoon was taken up with volunteer work at a local Botanical Park and I did not get anything that I would consider official "planned exercise". At the end of my shift I walked around looking for my name tag that I thought I had lost. This was by no means what I consider exercise, but my Fitbit considered it as such and logged it as part of my Weekly Goal!

Can't always trust our devices. Gotta listen to what our bodies and brains are telling us emoticon

As someone else put it - we are each an experiment of one. Find what works for you, and if might not be what works for someone else. emoticon emoticon

We are all different. We have to do what works for us at the time. And 10,000 steps a day is nothing to sneeze at. Great job!

It's great you found your rhythm. I agree with you, don't compare self to others, as in my opinion, one will always come up short. Do what works best for you!
