I had to find a new spark team because the one I was with disbanded.I started running last winter on my treadmill and then once it was nice enough outside I started going outside.I have a harder time running outside then inside. Not sure why.

Thank you Gill! This week the lessons have 2 min run, 1 min recovery. I finish off with whatever distance is left to equal the 5K.

Hi I am new to running!

I am using a beginning runner series on my iFit treadmill. I am up to: run at 4.8mph for 2 min, with 1 min recovery at 2.8mph (about 1.5 miles).

I plan to run (or run/walk) my first 5K on Father's Day.

Hello! I am not new to sparkpeople but am new to the team. I have been a runner for quite a while but have recently decided to start training for a half-marathon. I have done a couple in the past but not in quite some time.
It would be nice to chat with some fellow-runners!

Hello All!

I'm Crystal, 57 years younger and very new to running. I've participated in 4 5k races but have walked (ran just a little). I'm hoping to run a full 5k next year. Until then, I've been trying to increase my speed in walking and run as much as I can.

I look forward to learning from the experienced runners!

Hey folks!

I'm Sue, 58, and I started running (treadmill only) in August. I am noticing in the past couple of weeks that I am getting a teeny bit faster, and my recovery is a lot shorter, so that's great.
I'm running for my life... in a good way!! emoticon

Hello: I've only been running about 2 years now. I was up to 20 miles a week then injuries became a problem and I had to pull back and at times stopped. I am trying to get myself motivated to get back up to what I was doing. I loved getting out there. I can't believe I didn't discover this years ago. I've recently been using the Zombies Run app to add an element of fun. Summer is hear and mornings are a must.

Happy Trails!

HI! Rachel, here. I’ve been a casual runner for a few years. Last spring, my thyroid meds got lowered, and it took my body about 6 months to adjust to the change. I couldn’t run more than a quarter mile at a time because I felt so weak! After a 5k that I WALKED in the summer, I quit running. 😖 I’ve been working on my stress-reduction, nutrition, and exercising more consistently, and I feel great! I’ve been running slowly but surely again. On Sunday, I ran 2mi at 9:49, and I was so proud! I’ve been in the 10s/11s my last few, so I’m getting back into my groove! I’m excited to be here. I’m going to use the Nike Run app, so if anyone wants to add me, message me your full name and I’ll add you!

Hi all...

Newbie to the site but not to running. One of my favorite activities to so is to run.

I don't consider myself a hardcore runner since I only log about 10-12 miles per week but it's what works for me.

FYI, I lead the SparkPeople's 5K Your Way Running Challenge! 7 years ago I did it and have repeated it several times in recovery and coming out of injury.

My body couldn't walk 1 1/2 blocks when I started! I did the Marine Corps Marathon last Oct at 67!

You're ready. Take your time, don't worry about speed, focus on conditioning, endurance, and strength. Speed will come later. Do not hesitate to come here and ask as many questions as you need. That's why we're here!

I will not be responsible for any run addiction or bling ho action which may occur!

Welcome!

If you've never run before, I start out walking. That's what I did. There's a great program here..
teams.sparkpeople.com/WalkA5K

If you want to walk/jog...
teams.sparkpeople.com/WalkJoga5K

Your primary goal starting out is to build endurance & conditioning! Don't even say the word speed! Add strength training and stretching AFTER you've warmed up.
Bring all your questions to your teams or here. There are experienced "Rookies" in this bunch!

The most important thing to remember is to embrace it and have fun. Know that you are able to do things others wish they could!

Hi everyone. I'm Angela and I'm a second year medical student on the east coast. I've been an on/off user of Spark People and similar sites over the past few years, but since starting medical school, I've found keeping healthy is something I've been struggling with a lot, and I put on quite a bit of weight. I'm looking to regain my activity level and fitness, as well as lose weight, so that I can maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout graduate school into my professional career.

My name is Tia and I've been on spark for about a week. I am finally getting around to introducing myself to the teams I joined. I'm 34 and looking to kick 170ish pounds out of my life. I have one teenage son who I am hoping to learn healthy eating habits with before he ends up in my shoes. I was never taught to take care of myself and am starting at square one in healthy eating and exercise. Right now I am slowly trotting my way towards actually running /jogging. I am currently getting up 3 times a week and going out while listening to Zombies, Run! interactive running app, and i joined my first virtual race this past week. I am enjoying the feeling of being out of the house and pushing how far i can get in a set amount of time. Each time I push to cover more ground which forces me to pick the pace up just a little. I love it and can't wait to see where I'll be in a month, or even a year!

Well that's me in a nutshell. I enjoy playing games, reading, and becoming more physically active. Always looking to make friends and find ways to encourage others. Have a wonderful day!

Hey Andrea,

Nice to see you back:-) Sorry to hear about your Mom and Grandma...that is a tough one for sure. So happy that you are back at it, will give you the pointy boot when you need it, as long as you give me the same when I need the extra motivation:)

Hi everyone, I'm Andrea. I was in this group several years ago and loved it - then life got in the way and I stopped using SP. But I'm back!

The last two years have been challenging for me as I lost my mom and my grandma within a year of each other, and I let running take a backseat, but I am happily back at it again! I'm going to need a friendly nudge once in awhile though - I also have a tendency to be a fair weather runner. ;)

Looking forward to getting to know you all better!

Hi Everyone,
I'm a fair weather runner. Spring and fall are my favourite times to get out and hit the pavement high heat and exercise don't mix for me.

My goal as always is to be able to run 5k in under 30 minutes. Last year I got so close I could taste it this year it's happening...if you don't see me around get on my back so I can make this happen and accomplish this task once and for all.

Happy running.

Greetings from Corpus Christi, TX!

When my husbands job relocated us from Northern Montana to South Texas in 2015 I decided to start running for the first time in my life. Not sure what I was thinking coming from a cool dry climate to a hot humid one, (we moved in early July), but I persevered. Siince that first step, I have ran countless 5k races, placing in first in my division more than once; several 10k's including the Queen Elizabeth Causeway run in South Padre Island, TX and I finished my very first 1/2 marathon this past November and got hooked. I am hoping to run the Beach to Bay full here in Corpus next year. Looking forward to getting to know you all and sharing tips and advice and making a few friends.

Hi everyone, I have been a member of SP off and on since 2008. In October 2016 I decided to get serious about my weight loss and began exercising by jogging in place indoors and taking walks outside. This week I gave my first attempt at inserting a little jogging into my outdoor walking. So I am a real rookie at running. My work offers classes during the lunch hour so I started taking Pilates once a week, which I think really helps. I have noticed a big difference in the strength of my core, and I have seen an improvement in the quality and speed of the indoor running I do. I am hoping to eventually be able to jog regularly outdoors. Right now I think the biggest inhibitor is my confidence.

Hi all!

I'm Carrie, and I live in Philadelphia. I have been a member of Sparkpeople since 2009 (!) and I find that the accountability is helpful for sticking to a healthy lifestyle. I have run a number of races, including a marathon, half-marathon, various other distances, a few triathlons, and a Tough Mudder. In 2017, I am taking a break from race training - focusing more on running for the health (physical, mental, and emotional) benefits - and doing fun workouts. I have been taking static trapeze classes at a local circus school since summer of 2016, and I've become tons stronger and I don't think of it as a workout.

One of the best parts about Sparkpeople is that there is no judgement at all. It doesn't matter how long you've been here, what your goals are, or what you've done. I've met great people, both IRL and virtually, through Sparkpeople. It's helped me discover who I want to be!

I just fell in love with running a couple of years ago. I am 47. I had never considered running before. My dog is in training to be my running partner. I started to have a knee bothering me. So lately I am back to walk/jog because the last thing I want is to injure myself. I would really like to train for my very first 5k run in the spring. I love to run outside.

I don't run fast and I don't run far - but I do run pretty regularly. I've never done more than a 5k race - I'm tempted to have a go at 10k in the coming year.

I love going to my local Park Run 5k on a Saturday morning - that really is 'the best day of the week' for me!

I live in a small seaside town, in Cornwall, on the south-westernmost tip of the UK. It's very hilly in every direction, so I've got a natural training ground right on my doorstep.

On Spark I started with a C25K type programme, did a 5k Race for Life, then stopped running. I did another C25K programme...... I started the Making it a Habit Thread which Brian mentioned (and linked to) because I wanted support to keep running - to make it part of my life, a healthy habit. I tend to hang out on that thread mostly and report all my runs there.

I mostly use a walk/run method of running (loosely based on Jeff Galloway) which I find gives me the stamina to run faster and farther than when I try to run non-stop. Horse for courses, eh?!

Hi! I'm Brian (bdthom). I've been around SparkPeople for a long time (March 2016) and started running several times. I started again from scratch in March of 2014 and have stuck to it since. Wore out my first pair of running shoes!

A few of us have a thread here on the Rookie Running site were we concentrate on habit formation over time and distance. We are a supportive tribe of fresh new runners. If you struggle getting out the door for your runs, stop by and join in.

I am Monty Seidler. I invite you to check out my SparkPage to find out about me and how I embraced this Amazing Journey!

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage.asp

I became a runner at 61, a Triathlete at 63, and have maintained my weight loss for over 5 & 1/2 years. I've experienced the lowest of lows and the highest of highs on this amazing journey! I've also never been happier! This is why I became a Leader to four Spark Teams. I want to share what I've experienced and learned so others my have the same joy and live longer healthier lives!

This thread is for new and existing Rookie Runners to introduce themselves to the group, so we can start this journey to health and wellness as friends.

My name is Trish Carefoot, I am 49 years old, and am from West Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. I am a co-leader of the Rookie Runners, and have been on Sparkpeople since 2006. When I started running, I was only able to go about 30 seconds at a time...lots of walking, but also lots of running. Over time, I found my body able to go farther running before walking. Although I did no formal program at the start, I did listen to my body, and it soon became the highlight of my day. In October 2007, I ran my first marathon - what a wonderful feeling crossing the finish-line! From 2007 until 2010 I ran a bunch of races and relay events.

In 2010 I ended up with a very bad back injury, which sidelined me for the better part of 4 years. My family had some tragedies happen as well, which brought on depression. You know what though? I am getting it done now. Having recommitted to the program, I am working on my health and fitness. As for running, I am doing the Couch to 10km program if anyone is interested in joining me, I will make a thread for it. For weight loss, well, I have put on a bunch over the past several years, so clean eating is what I am working toward.

Looking forward to meeting you all:-)

Hugs,
Trish
