I find this site so helpful. Just entering my food and exercise makes a huge difference, but getting emails from SparkPeople.com and goodies from the other members really helps too.

Yes, you can do this! SP has so many stories of people who have been successful, and their stories are so motivating. Use this site in any way that it helps you, and I know you can become a healthier person. Good luck!

Hi Rebekah........my first thought, since you study literature (lucky you!) and you write is that you should start a book..right now, about how it felt to walk out of the doctor's office realizing that somewhere along the way you lost yourself in food......then start writing about your journey back to your genuine self
just a thought......but a lot of people would love a book like that.......I for one was sorely let down by that Valerie Bertenelli (sp?) book.......it didn't talk about how she felt, what she did, etc......it was not at all genuine in my opinion

Welcome Rebekah! That's so awesome that you're a writer. I always wanted to write but seriously lack the concentration and focus to do so (migraines mixed with Bipolar disorder and ADD...not helpful!). I'm glad you decided not to go the route of having surgery to lose weight. I've heard it doesn't always end up being the best. When my doctor told me I was close to qualifying for it (at 218, 5'1") that's when I pretty much lost it and said I can't do this anymore. I've been slowly losing, down to 198 now, but honestly that's through modifying my diet. I have a problem with my foot and now have to do physical therapy before I can get back to exercising normally. Anyway, I want to wish you lots of luck and make sure to stay motivated! You can do this!

Hello, my name is Rebekah. I am 29 years old, a wife and mother, a full time student of Literature, a vegetarian, and a writer. I have been overweight my whole life ( since I was 10), and I have lost and gained weight so much I have lost count of the times. But I went to the doctor the other day, and when I got on the scale I saw a number that scared me to death, 278. I left the doctor that day thinking, "When did I get this big? How could I let myself go for this long?" I couldn't shake the number 278 out of my head. I am relatively healthy for my size, but I know I can't hope to stay that way forever, and I must do something now. I have friends who have done or are doing the Lap Band, but I just can't feel comfortable with undergoing major surgery to loose weight myself. It scares me. I have a lot of bad eating and lifestyle habits, and only I can change them. I know this is going to be a slow battle, but I know I can do this. If I can keep my GPA up to almost a 4.0, and write a novel, I can become a healthier person.
