Hey Yall! I've been a vegetarian for about 15 years! More than half of my life! I hate to say that I'm not vegetarian for animal rights issues or to eat healther, I just think meat looks disgusting before it's cooked, like it repulses me, so I can't eat it!

Hi all - so glad to see vegetarians and vegans here! I just joined today, and have been vegan for about 2 1/2 years (straight from omni - my partner, now husband, moved in and he's been vegan way longer than I have). I'm a doctoral student teaching full time and working on my dissertation. That elliptical trainer comes in handy for stress management!

Hi, I'm Bonnie. I became a vegetarian and then a vegan about a year ago. I never liked meat very much, but after reading Skinny Bitch I could never eat meat again. I live in northern California, and I'm a foster kitten Mom for a local shelter.

Hello my name is Angie, I am new to the team as well as new to vegetarianism. I recently decided to become a vegetarian for health, compassion and environmental reasons and I feel really good about the decision so far. I am 26 and currently living in Australia studying for a masters but I am a Canadian born and bread. I have always struggled with my weight, always feeling like I am not thin enough. I competitvely figured skated for years which is a sport that demands a small body and I never measured up. Once I quit skating after university I gained about 25lbs up to 170 lbs. I managed to get back down to my skating weight but I since then I have fluctuated up and down from 145 to 160 over and over again. I can't seem to get and keep my ideal weight. My main issue is portion control so I am really hoping that by tracking everything I can get contol over this. I continue to be active playing ultimate frisbee at the Uni and running at least 3 times a week but this doesn't help when I over eat. So thats my story and I am hoping with the support from Spark to get down to 135 - 140 and maintain that weight. Thanks

Hello, my name is Rebekah. I am 29 years old, a wife and mother, a full time student of Literature, a vegetarian, and a writer. I have been overweight my whole life ( since I was 10), and I have lost and gained weight so much I have lost count of the times. But I went to the doctor the other day, and when I got on the scale I saw a number that scared me to death, 278. I left the doctor that day thinking, "When did I get this big? How could I let myself go for this long?" I couldn't shake the number 278 out of my head. I am relatively healthy for my size, but I know I can't hope to stay that way forever, and I must do something now. I have friends who have done or are doing the Lap Band, but I just can't feel comfortable with undergoing major surgery to loose weight myself. It scares me. I have a lot of bad eating and lifestyle habits, and only I can change them. I know this is going to be a slow battle, but I know I can do this. If I can keep my GPA up to almost a 4.0, and write a novel, I can become a healthier person. People always say to me, "But how can you be overweight if you're a vegetarian?" It amuses me how people don't seem to realize that potato chips, cake, and ice cream don't have meat in them. Currently, I am looking for some great recipes involving eggplant as a main ingredient, so if anyone knows of any, please let me know.

Hello everyone! I live in Battle Ground,WA. I am mother to 4 beautiful children and wife to Hubby Tim. I've been vegan for about 9 weeks. My friend Julia shared with me a book that she read called Eat To Live by Dr, Joel Fuhrman. I've been following his diet as described in the book. Only 9 weeks and I'm down 43 pounds! I still have a long way to go to reach my ideal weight, but am feeling more alive than I ever have. I plan to stick with the vegan thing for the rest of my life. Dr. Fuhrman explains in his book how harmful yo-yo dieting can be and that the best way to go is a lifestyle change. I guess what I'm looking for here is some support and maybe recipes from people who have been at it for longer then I have.

As you can probably guess, I am vegan; I was vegetarian for 6 years & turned vegan 7 years ago. My name is actually Meredith & I'm pretty new here, still trying to figure out how to use this site besides tracking calories. I'm following a gluten-free diet right now which is making this a little more difficult but I really want to get back to a healthier weight (ie what I weighed before I had my son).

Hi! I've recently begun trying to maintain a vegan (ish?) diet lately, for multiple reasons; health, compassion, weight loss, etc. I've been doing it a month, and have lost 24 lbs. I lost 120 lbs a few years ago with the help of Sparkpeople, but gained it all back because of stress (and laziness.) I'm hoping to make it permanent this time.

Hello, everyone! My name is Janie, and I adopted a vegan diet one year ago - almost to the day! I went cold tofu, as the saying goes, after watching the film "Earthlings"; a phenomenon that I'm told is not at all uncommon. I have felt wonderful eating vegan, and initally lost some weight doing so just from the elimination of a lot of heavy foods. I'm from Wisconsin, where cheese is king, so giving that up made a big difference. I joined SparkPeople in order to get a handle on my bad eating habits, namely too much refined carbs, and my mostly sedentary lifestyle. I hoped the trackers would really help, and I was surprised to see a veg group here... makes me feel quite at home. :)

Hi, my name is Billie. I've been a vegetarian since I was twelve and a vegan for almost a year. I've always loved animals, but I just didn't realize they were being killed for my food, and when I did, I stopped eating meat. Same with veganism. I dropped about twenty pounds by eliminating eggs and dairy, and I want to keep that up, because I still have about forty pounds to go until I'm my ideal weight.

Hi Janie :)
My name is Sara. I've been experimenting with tofu for the past couple of years and so far my favorite way of preparing it is to chop it up into small pieces, put in a skillet with a little bit of olive oil, let it cook just until it's light golden (make sure you stir often and watch close because in my experience it can burn easily), and then I put some kind of sauce on it, like bbq or teriyaki. I usually choose a sauce that has about 60 calories for like 2 tablespoons. Don't be worried about the extra calories of the sauce because it doesn't take much sauce to cover one serving of tofu. I hope this helps.

Hi, my name is Janie and I live South of Ottawa in a small village. I hate meat, but I think I'm what you all refer to as a Pescetarian. I'd like to learn how to use Tofu...and what the best first recipes are to try. Can anyone point me in a good direction? Smiles and thanks, Janie

Hello everyone! I am Larissa from Virginia. I am new to Sparkpeople but loved the website from day one. I have been a vegetarian my whole life. It is not by choice but for some odd reason my body and mind rejects all meat. My doctor seems to think it is a texture issue. I have lived most of my life on bread, potatoes and cheese. I just recently had lapband surgery and need less carbs and more protein. I have started with some soy protein and quinoa and looking for any great ideas that do not include meat, fish or eggs. I hope that I can find that help here. Hope to talk to you guys soon.

Hi Everyone! :)

I am Kristin from New Jersey and a newbie to Sparkpeople. I was a avid meat eater...hamburgers, steak, anything you can think of. I saw a segment on Ellen regarding vegetarianism with Jonathan Safran Foer. He wrote "Eating Animals". It changed my life! Although not a Vegan, I am now aware of where my eggs and chicken come from and make sure they were humanely. I can say that I absolutely LOVE Free range eggs. The taste is wonderful and clean. But I digress...just wanted to introduce myself :) Thank you for this forum and please stop by to say hi or chat :) The door is aways open :) emoticon

Hello, my name is Bob I have been a member of Sparkpeople for 1 1/2 years and love the site... I have lost 27 lbs as of this morning and have about 9 more to go.
Although I am not a vegan or 100% vegetarian I try not to eat meat, I will eat poultry as long as it isn't processed in any way, that includes hormones or antibotics.
I shop at Trader Joes often and get many of my ideas from that store.
I look forward to getting ideas from this team and I also have many ideas to share. ( I am also a Chef by trade) :)

Hi everybody :) My name is Sara, I'm 19 years old and I've been vegetarian for 4 years now. I'm not that new to sparkpeople, (I've been using it for a few months now) I'm just new to the message boards and all the extra things like that. After 4 years, I've figured out a lot of different tricks to being vegetarian especially when you're eating out and still trying to be healthy, so if there are any new vegetarians that need any advice I would be more than happy to help you out. Glad to be part of this team :)

Hi,

I went vegan over three months ago. I did go cold turkey after being a meat eater. I had been reading about it and had always wanted to try. I was reading "The Kind Life" and decided is was time. I am lucky that my husband and family have been very supportive. I love it!! I feel so light.

Hi Everyone--

I've been a vegetarian since late 1994. In the past few years I've been trying to majorly cut down on my dairy and egg intakes (successfully), but I would definitely not call myself vegan.

I joined because I have been gaining and losing the same 15 pounds throughout most of my 20s, and have been stuck on "gain" mode for the past year and a half or so. A big issue for me is anxiety. Something sets me off (a stressful time at work, for example) and I get into a spiral where I never see the gym and I start eating more processed foods. (It is around this time when my dairy intake starts to increase as well, which is never good for my weight.) I also tend to use food as a coping mechanism, craving junk after a really bad day at work or after a really good day (in celebration).

I'm so happy that Sparkpeople has a vegetarian forum, and that I've already gotten my questions about their protein requirements answered just by reading around! :)

Hi I'm Kathy. I have done diet therapy for over 14 years, 10 of them being strict Macrobiotics. This helped with healthy issues, but then began having more problems. I wasn't sure if I had gone to strict so I started adding in more variety. I am trying to find a team to that I can learn from as well as be encouraged from while I try to keep strict with my diet.
I am the only one in my family that eats strictly and at times I just give up and eat what ever. But I find I am much stronger and healthier if I eat clean.

Hi! I'm brand new to spark people and still finding my way around. I have always been pretty thin, but never too fit. However, recently i have put on about 10 lbs & have been struggling for the last year to loose it. I recently spoke to a friend who mentioned spark people to track exactly what I am eating and the past couple days I am surprised at what I have found already.
My goal is to loose the extra pounds but more importantly to feel better in my skin. I am getting married in nov so that is my goal date, but i really want to make a change for my life and well- being. emoticon

I've been vegan for 10 years. I've made my diet work in all kind of situations--living in a tent on a mountain, working at a casino, but for no great reason I started eating cheese again about a year ago and easily packed on 25lbls.

I also have recently started to pick my Mom up from dialysis and I have decided I just don't ever want to end up in that position.

the weird thing is, I finally have health insurance that pays for gastric bypass and weight watchers, but I just can't imagine doing that. I've never struggled emotionally with my weight or dieted. Being vegan always seemed to be magic for my blood tests and blood pressure results despite my size.

But I turned 27 this week, and I don't want to have a hip replacement before I'm 30 because I'm exacerbating my prior joint problem. So my "New Year's Resolution" is that instead of trying to be an overnight raw foodist who bike commutes to work and drinks 3 nalgenes a day, maybe I will try a really healthy reasonable diet with some gym and not go into diet Coke withdrawal immediately :D

Hi everyone. Just recently join Sparkspeople. Great site.

My name is Sheila, I am 47 yo mom of one. I started my diet transition to vegetarian diet a year after my daughter was born, 7 years ago. Remember the big mad cow ordeal years ago? Well, that totally grossed me out along with realizing what is happening with the massive meat production and the animal conditions. My family made the decision then to first cut out beef and pork, then chicken and turkey, and finally fish. My husband is a vegan however I still have some cheeses and eggs, no cow milk. I have to say I feel much better. Before this my blood work was horrible, high cholestrol, trigs, etc. Now, everything is normal. The only issue I really need to work on is my weight. My metabolism totally whacked out after my pregnancy. I haven't been the same body since.

I am still transitioning. I have been on a 80 to 90% raw food diet for a few weeks and enjoying it. Two great books I have read recently are "Conscious Eating" by Gabriel Cousens and "The Sunfood Diet" by David Wolfe.

Sheila

Hi, I'm Tina!

I have been vegetarian on and off since 1990. I consider myself more of a conscious consumer than a vegetarian at this point. My 16 year old son was born when I was a strict vegetarian and is still one himself. My husband does hunt, so we eat venison sparingly, but we do not purchase any meat from the grocery store. Our primary diet is vegetarian.

I find it frustrating that we eat better than many people around us yet I am 80 pounds overweight. I have gained and lost at least 60 pounds at least three times in my life, maybe more. I've lost track at this point. However, this is the longest I've ever been overweight; 10+ years.

I can't honestly say that I don't feel unattractive or ugly. Part of my problem may be the lack of a motivating factor to lose the weight. I know I need to be more physically active and more strict about my diet. I am so sensitive to sweets. You know the kind? We smell the cheesecake and gain five pounds! Well, that's me. LOL

I'm thankful to be here. Maybe being part of this group will motivate me to be even more conscious about what goes into my body and take healthy living a little more seriously.

Hello everyone. I joined this team way back when, then never returned to Sparks, or introduced myself.

This is my second time around at Sparks, but I intend to persist this time.

I have been vegan for approximately 8 years. I began for health reasons, but as I read more it has changed to ethical and ecological reasons.

I find myself eating foods that are high in oils and this week while tracking my nutrition, I have found that basic meals give me fewer calories than I need. I suspect that is the cause of my late evening snacking on high calorie low value foods.

I am a grad student with a year to go helping my wife make it through the last stage of her dissertation.

Good luck to everyone, and nice to meet you all. emoticon

Yet there was a man within me
Could have risen to the clouds,
Could have touched these winds,
Bent and broken them down,
Could have stood up sharply in the sky.

Hi Everyone, I'm a vegetarian since 1994. It was quite hard at the beginning but now there are more veggie products out there to eat. I tend to go to the States to buy my veggie food because they offer more variety there. It's a shame I can't find the variety here in London, Ontario.
I am on Sparkpeople to lose weight and hopefully get more sleep.
I am an E.A at a school in London. I love my job. My husband and I dance at a studio and so does my daughter. I also play baseball and my hockey team is The Montreal Canadians as I am originally from Montreal.
Good luck to everyone on here and I hope you all get what you need out of this wonderful site.

Hello!
I'm new to SparkPeople this week. I started giving up meat about 4 years ago, and I lost 85 pounds. But during the past 2 years, despite becoming a vegan and eating healthier than I ever have, my weight has crept back up 25 pounds.

When I lost the weight the first time I was eating mostly packaged and restaurant foods, so it was easy to count calories. Now that I'm vegan and eating almost completely whole foods it's become harder for me to count calories, which is why I think I've slipped back up. My doctor suggested SparkPeople to help me, and so far it's made a big difference just this first week.

I also live in a place far from any Whole Foods, but luckily there's a Wegmans with a good Organic section near my parents' house (where I spend weekends), and I've joined a coop about an hour away with a great veg cafe - that's my once a month treat!

I'm very glad to meet more vegetarians and vegans.

Welcome to the team, to both of you!
Where in the world do you live that you don't have a Whole Foods, I thought they were EVERYWHERE! Sorry, to hear you don't have one, but I have noticed the mainstream grocery stores, even Walmart, are starting to sell "vegetarian" foods!

Hi! I'm 23 and have been lacto-ovo vegetarian for 4 1/2 years. I became vegetarian because I love animals and always felt guilty about eating meat. I went vegan for awhile earlier this year, but I gained a little weight (probably because I was hungry from not having enough protein) and found it very hard to maintain. My husband is an omni, and though he was supportive, it became very difficult for us to go out to eat together or even share a meal at home. We don't have a Trader Joes or Whole Foods or anywhere cool like that around here either.
I plan to become completely vegan again after learning more about vegan staples and restaurants that have vegan friendly food, which it seems like I'll definitely be able to do here!!

Hi kellee, have you tried adding black beans to salads, rice dishes or dips with no-fat hummus, salsa and loads of fresh cilantro or green onions? These are just a few yummy options. Just 1/2 cup has 8 grams of plant-strong proteins, and scientic world population studies suggest that we need only 50-70 grams of protein daily. Don't know where you live, but Whole Foods Market has added several varieties of bean/grain options to their salad bars, as part of their "Health Starts Here" program.

hi, i'm kellee, i'm 30 and i've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 12 years now and getting enough protein has always been an issue for me. although in the past year or so, i've tried to start incorporating fish occasionally into my diet to make up for it, but it is a struggle for me and just not worth it.

so now i'm trying a protein shake and i do eat soy products on a semi-regular basis. off and on i've been a very lazy vegetarian and quite unhealthy and my weight has fluctuated a lot over the years. i am finally on the last 15 pounds to my goal weight (i was down to the last seven, but had a major setback, blah) and really needing some accountability and a way to truly make this a life change and not just a diet.

congrats on being vegan, kate, and i am envious that you are a great cook! :D

Hi, my name is Kate, and I have been a vegan for over 1/2 of a year. I went from omnivore to vegan overnight after researching to go vegetarian as a new year's resolution. It's been a very easy transition for me and I'm a great cook.

I'm in my mid-fifties and live in Florida. This is my very first post.
