Severance by Ling Ma.
3 or 4 stars (sorry to be indecisive, but it was weird)
This is a dystopian novel about New York City after it and the rest of the world is affected by a modern-day plague. I say "affected" rather than devastated because the author describes a world in which commerce survives the end of the world as we know it. The main character---a millennial from China, like the author herself---inhabits a universe in which brand names are more familiar, important, and significant than human beings. The conceit of the novel is interesting: the sickness affects our ability to conduct our business lives, but leaves our desire to participate in the workaday world intact. But that promise isn't fulfilled, in my opinion, and overall the book left me wanting more of a philosophy, conclusion, or event of some sort to pull the reader on. Without that, I was left feeling confused as to the writer's intent and empty as a result. I'm sorry to say that because I really wanted this book to live up to its promise....

Murder in the Beltway - Margaret Truman 4 stars

The last in her Capitol Crimes series. Kept me intrigued to the very end. A prostitute is found murdered. A young girl is kidnapped. There is a Presidential election with one of the candidates known for extracurricular activities outside his marriage. It is all tied together.

Enjoyed reading this book and the series.
