The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection by Alexander McCall Smith - 3 stars

#13 in the series about the No. 1 Ladies Detective Series. It was a sweet book catching with characters. Overall I was able to predict most of the plot but there were a few surprises and learned more about each of the main characters.

Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth by Sarah Smarsh, 4 stars

I read this in just a couple days and found it compelling. The author was a farm girl, born to struggling Kansas residents, who worked their fingers to the bone but found it impossible to escape their working-class poverty. She was the exception, and she gives a sympathetic account of her family's travails, which she explains as systemic disadvantage rather than personal failure. For anyone who grew up in "flyover country"---and she rails against this discriminatory term---their story will ring true.
