Bachelorette #1 - Jennifer O'Connell 2.5 stars

Writer goes undercover to gain a slot on the "Hen" - basically the Bachelorette. First half was light hearted but I began to really dislike the main character who left home and her 2 year old for 5 weeks to be on the show.

Unintended Consequences - Stuart Woods - 3 stars

Trying to finish the series but realize that I have about 20 to go and not sure I am going to continue with it. Fast reading but very implausible.

Daisy Miller by Henry James--5*
Winterbourne meets and falls in love with another young American in Europe, beautiful Daisy Miller. Daisy is a permissively-raised nouveau-riche sauvage who is true to herself and keeps her own counsel, ignoring high society and its rigid rules, preferring the company of ordinary citizens who accept her for herself, which gets her condemned, but inconsistently, as either too naive or too slutty. This is a short, lucidly written novella in which little happens on the surface but in its substrata displaying much of James's cultural and psychological astuteness about the American character of his day. It can be seen as an allegory analysing fresh, vital, but naive and boorish American ideals clashing with Europe's elegant, cultured, but rigid, arrogant, and decaying social dictates in the gilded age of rising American influence and prosperity.

Uncle Silas by J. Sheridan Le Fanu--4*
This Gothic Tale was both entertaining and interesting from a literary history point of view. The story was unfolded rather skillfully but felt too slow and dragged out. It contained several flaws IMHO that prevent it from being a first-rate horror novel, the most annoying I thought was its being narrated by the protagonist many years later, so the author removes the suspense and terror factors by such early mega-spoilers. Then there was the unbelievable depraved indifference of the dying father in sacrificing his only child's safety and fortune, and how our Victorian male author conveniently resorts to female hysteria to justify why our sometimes plucky heroine so bizarrly freezes and passes up opportunities to save herself until cornered on the brink of death. Yet it is still an enjoyable read and a must for fans of dark Gothic horror fiction.

Collateral Damage - Stuart Woods - 3.5 stars

Another in the Stone Barrington series. This one was one of the better ones - in line with why I started the series. You still have to suspend thinking this could be true but it was a quick read on the plane.

How to Eat a Cupcake - Meg Donahue 3 stars

A "sweet" read but a bit annoying. It kept alluding to incidents in the past but not telling you the whole story. Once it was filled in it was a bit of a let down. Very predictable ending. It was like reading the plot for a Hallmark Christmas movie but not done as well. Thought there would be some more depth to the story.

Two young girls who grew up together start a cupcake store. One girl is wealthy. The other was the daughter of the the first girl's nanny. They had a following out 10 years ago but quickly decide to go into business together.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman 4 stars

Don't be fooled by the jacket. This is not a humorous book, although the main character says some funny things. The underlying tale is very serious and disturbing. The novel, set in Glasgow, is well crafted and thoughtfully written, and I found it engaging.

I'd picked this up as something fun to read with my 92-year-old mom, who needed a lift, and it turned out to be completely wrong for that purpose!
