Rules of Civility by Amor Towles (5*)
A poor NY City working girl and her wealthy midwest-transplant roommate meet a handsome, rich, well-connected banker at a Jazz club, who will play a major role in both their lives as they move among both the high and low societies during 1938. This was a full-blooded human drama with great story, great characters, and great dialogue. There are many important observations about life, the human condition, and choices and fate to ponder.

-- Fools Crow by James Welch (5*)
This is the story of several years in the life of a young Blackfoot moving into manhood, growing as both a warrior and healer as his tribe struggles with nature, disease, rival tribes, and the white settlers and military, trying to avoid extinction. It is written in a style that reflects the milieu, spiritualism, values, relationships, and family life of the young protagonist, transporting the reader to another time, place, and culture. Although a brutal story, it presents the humanity of those who have been portrayed through history and film as less than human cardboard stereotypes.

--It's Like This, Cat by Emily Cheney Neville (5*)
The only child of a caustic, intrusive lawyer father and fragile, asthmatic mother finds early adolescence painful and complicated as his need for greater respect and autonomy is ignored. Because his father approves of his getting a dog, he gets a cat. This was a surprisingly well-written and insightful bildungsroman in which our narrator grows in maturity and wisdom through his care for his cat, the gaining and losing of friends, and the on-going family battles. Interestingly, it isn't only the kid who has to change his ways and start to consider other family members' needs and feelings before more peaceful and respectful family relations can develop. Besides having great life lessons, this book is also an excellent history of urban teen life in middle-class NY City during the late 50's/early 60's.

--The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey (4*)
A Russian folk tale about an aging childless couple who build a snowman who turns into a child is re-set in 1920's Alaska. I suspect that most people would enjoy this novel somewhat more than I did since it did show much creativity and charm. Although I love a good fantasy and also love a good realistic human drama, there was just something about plopping the fantasy character into the realistic human drama that just didn't work for me. It somehow felt off-kilter to me but hopefully not to you.

--Christmas After All: The Great Depression Diary of Minnie Swift, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1932 by Kathryn Lasky (4*)
This is one of the volumes in the Dear America series of children's books in which several different authors create diaries supposedly written by young girls during major historical periods and events. The author's writing style didn't appeal to me personally, however, the story itself was great and covered a lot of ground about life as a child during the 30's with families trying to cope with shortages and economic insecurity. I would recommend this book, and other volumes in this series, to compensate for the declining importance of teaching history in today's schools.

Just finished "The Obesity Code" by Dr. Jason Fung. 5 stars. It takes concentration & thinking, and probably re-reading. I has what looks like valid medical info that you've heard before, but without having it combined in Fungs' way. Very persuasive.

The wrong team came up, so I posted my 4 star "A cold day in paradise" review there. It's happened before so I should have figured it out sooner.

The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch (5*)
This is a sequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora in which the Magi save Locke from a poisoning in exchange for his doing some election-tampering in their home city. However, the opposite party has their own fixer--the woman who broke Locke's heart. There is much reason to distrust if the election is really why the Magi are using Locke, or are they up to something else, more sinister? This volume of the series was not as much fun and has lost a large portion of the lightness and humor, although they are still present, and felt more dark and grim. Nevertheless, the story was full of twists and turns and did not disappoint.
