On this day, May 9, 1970:

The Guess Who hit the top spot on Billboard's Hot 100 with "American Woman". The song was born by accident when guitarist Randy Bachman was playing a heavy riff on stage after he had broken a string and the band had taken a break. The other members joined in on the jam and Burton Cummings started singing the first thing that came into his head. A fan in the audience had it all on tape and presented it to the group after the show. It was quickly developed into a full song in the studio and ended up spending 3 weeks at the top of the US singles chart. It made #19 in the UK.

On May 9, 1973:

Mick Jagger adds $150,000 of his own money to the $350,000 raised by The Rolling Stones' January benefit concert for victims of the Nicaraguan earthquake.

Several US department stores refuse to stock the newly released Prince album "Lovesexy" because of its cover photo, which features a nude picture of him.

On May 4, 1963: The Beach Boys “Surfin USA” LP debuts on Billboard’s album chart, where it will enjoy a 78 week stay and top out at #2.

On May 4, 1964: The Moody Blues are formed in Birmingham, England. The group was the brain child of vocalist Denny Laine, who recruited Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas, Graham Edge, and Clint Warwick. *This of course was the original lineup. Justin Hayward and John Lodge came later. Justin Hayward replaced Denny Laine as vocalist. I saw these guys in concert in the fall of 2012. They were great!

This year’s edition of Who’s Who in America becomes the first to include notable rock stars other than Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Making the cut are the Rolling Stones, the Jefferson Airplane, the Mamas & the Papas, the Doors, Monkees, the Grateful Dead, and Donovan. Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan are inexplicably omitted.

On this day in rock history, January 4, 1954, four days before his 20th birthday, a young truck driver named Elvis Presley paid $4 to record a ten-inch acetate demo at the Memphis Recording Service, an open-to-the-public business run by Sam Phillips. The two songs Presley recorded, "Casual Love Affair" and "I'll Never Stand In Your Way", impressed Phillips enough that he had Elvis record his first professional sides for Sun Records the following August. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Fast forward to January 4, 2017, 63 years later, Nielsen Music reported that sales of George Michael's music skyrocketed in the days following his death last Christmas Day. The former Wham! singer sold around 477,000 albums and songs in the week ending 29 December compared to 17,000 the week before, an increase of 2,678 per cent. emoticon emoticon emoticon RIP George Michael!

On January 1st, 1956, RCA released Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel". In 1999, the single would be certified multi-platinum for the second time.

Also on January 1, but in 1962, The Beatles attend a New Year's Day audition for Decca Records where they record 15 songs. After reviewing their material, the company decided to sign Brian Poole And The Tremeloes instead. A record company executive tells Brian Epstein, "These boys won't make it. Guitar groups are out. Go back to Liverpool, Mr. Epstein. You have a good business there."

On January 1, 1971, Radio Luxembourg aired over seven hours of continuous Beatles' music to celebrate the group's tenth year in the music business. Every song played was a single or LP track by The Beatles or from their solo albums.

The album was a blockbuster! Double album that stayed #1 on the charts for who knows how many weeks. Certified platinum in the UK and the US. Well received by many countries around the world.

A British film was released in 1982 about The Wall. A very depressing film. I saw it. Today they have an opera about it commemorating it’s 40th anniversary!

On this day, November 20, 1973, at a The Who concert drummer Keith Moon passes out at his drum kit. A 19 year old fan Scott Halpin takes over for the three remaining songs. It wasn’t jet lag but horse tranquilizers Keith Moon apparently took to cause him to pass out. emoticon emoticon emoticon

On this day, November 16 1974 in rock music historyJohn Lennon had his only solo, number one hit in the US during his lifetime when "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" hit the top. In his homeland, it could do no better than #36. His girl friend, May Pang, would later recall that John got the inspiration for the song when he saw TV evangelist Reverend Ike utter the phrase "Let me tell you guys, it doesn't matter, it's whatever gets you through the night."

Today in 1969 Janis Joplin gets busted for using foul and vulgar language at her Tampa concert. She berates the cops when they ask her to tell the audience to take their seats. Joplin is arrested backstage after the show. Guess what? The charges are eventually dropped.

That is awesome! I love that song!

We sure have been hearing a lot about Ric Ocasek’s late wife Paulina this week! What is more important the fact that he died or the contents of his will? She is quite independently wealthy herself!

I will try to post at least 1 song/album or event every day, but I prefer release dates of songs or albums. Feel free to chime in! It doesn’t have to be distant history either. It can be from this millennium. If you just want to share what you think of any of the songs/albums/events, feel free to do so. It is not always easy to find exact, verifiable dates in music history! emoticon emoticon
