Hi, my name is Lynn. I am 44 (will be 45 in June) and I am from Philadelphia, PA. I do not have any children but I have a niece and two nephews whom I love dearly. There is another child on the way but the sex is not yet known (but that is a story for another day).

I joined Spark People back in October of 08 but I never really used the tools. I know, shame on me. I made a decision that 09 would be the year to take care of me. You see, I took in my brother when I bought my home more than 10 years age. He battles with addiction. I call him a triple threat as he has issue with alcohol, drugs and gambling. Six years ago my parents moved in as well.

Let me also say that I have a sister as well. She lives in Delaware with her family. All of my life I have been the one who everyone else depended on to 'fix things.' I have been the one who has run in the middle of the night to sit with my nephew when my sister took her daughter to the ER, or been the one who went out searching the streets when my brother went out on a binge to make sure he was all right. I am the one who takes off when my parents need to have testing done or need to see health care providers all while working full time and obtaining my degrees. I have an AAS in Accounting, BA in Organizational Management and an MBA with a concentration in management. Despite all of my education I still can not spell. I am so thankful for computers and spell check.

Not to drag this story on much longer let me get to the point. 2008 was not a good year for me. Over the past years I have accumulated more weight related medical issues. Last January I was in a car accident, nothing too serious, but I did suffer some head trauma, injuries to my back, legs, neck and shoulder. I am still suffering from some residual effects of the accident. In addition in May of 08 I fell while riding my bicycle. I developed severe swelling and redness on left leg and ankle. As I was still in PT for the injuries from the car accident the Physical Therapist saw my leg and immediately sent me to the ER. Well, to this day they have no idea as to what was going on. In all likelihood it was a blood clot complicated by a skin infection. Due to the fact that I am soooo overweight they could not definitively diagnose as a clot.

I think that may have been the final straw for me. I look at it as a wake up call that if I do not do something now I may not see 50. I know I will never be thin. It is not in my genetic make up (both sides of my family are large). However, I know I don't have to be as big as I am. I would like to see 188 pounds again - this was the weight that I looked good and could do most anything. I will be satisfied if I can get down to 200 - 220 range though. With that said I need to lose at least 160 pounds to hit the top end of my range.

For all of you who will take the time to read this story I know we share some sort of common thread. I want to thank you for your support and I look forward to using this tool to reach my goal. I also wish each of you success on your individual journeys.

Hi, I am Pat from DE. Where does your sister live in DE? I am sorry things are going rough for you right now. What helps me is journaling. I write down my food, thoughts and feelings. If I see a pattern where I am starting to slide I look to see why and work to change it. I am here for you. Keep in touch if you want. Sending you a tender hug to let you know I care. Pat
