Why is it so hard to keep the weight off?

I am so frustrated! It is so hard to keep the weight off. Right before Christmas I was only 7 lbs away from my goal weight. Then I fell off the wagon and gained back 7 lbs. I can come up with a million excuses as to why, but honestly I just got burned out. I didn't want to "diet" anymore or workout. It has been really hard for me to get back to it. I'll do great for a couple of weeks and lose 3 or 4 lbs, then I'll cheat and I'm back to square one. I hate that it's so hard to lose the weight and so easy to gain it. Design flaw if you ask me :-) I'm running my first 5k this coming Saturday. I'm hoping that I don't keel over. I'm a little nervous and feeling very out of shape. Wish me luck.
