Tuesday field trip

Field trip to Waites Island was fantastic.. we helped do a loggerhead turtle nest inventory. What that is - is the babies hatched last friday, then they wait a few days to make sure no others hatch and dig it up to record how many hatched/died/did not hatch/.. and we found a live baby !! he would have died if they had not dug up the nest.. it is very rare to see a baby just born because they hatch out at night. This was so exciting. the person in charge took it close to the ocean (was getting on low tide).. and we all oooded and aaawwwed, and they recorded it for the university. I took a ton of pics- he made it to the ocean, we protected him from the seagulls, but kept our distance.. it was so exciting, and when he made it into the water we all were yelling go little turtle go.. after each wave he put his little head up and we watched until we could not see him anymore- may he live long...
Then one of the monitors found 2 star fish- put one in the ocean while we looked at the other and then put it back. it was a beautiful and exciting morning.. got in my walking exercise too.
day 6 of SB ok..
