Cheap & Lazy vs. Knowledge & Skill…

Saturday, October 03, 2009

So, when I moved into my house I was in the midst of a long term relationship with a paint contractor. A guy with a great sense of style and good with color. Well, because the “plan” was that he would making this his home as well I let him do his “painter’s thing”.

Living room, dining room, hallway -Pale green (acantha) walls with a french white trim & doors. Merlot carpet.

Master bedroom, dusty pink with a cranberry red feature wall.

Office some weird blue green with a darkish beige feature wall.

Guess room creamy yellow with the same darkish beige feature.

It is very different, but quite pretty… for awhile.

Now that I not only am no longer with that guy (WOOHOO!), and have a most wonderful Darling Husband (doing the happy dance) I have decided to paint everything one of our favorite colors - shades of WHITE! Can you tell where this is going?

Back to the title - Cheap. First of all, we got one quote from a guy who has done some really good work on the house for us and it was really more than we really wanted to spend (I will get another quote, but I'm sure his will be the best quote). From there I decided that I might want to try to do it myself. Particularly the master bedroom with the red wall. The issue there being that with a double primer over the red is a lot of work to pay for if I can do it myself. It would also be a good source of activity for a day, instead of going to they gym.

So, I did purchase and paint a few sample colors and I think we agreed on one. Then the process begins, right? Wrong.

Lazy. I did all that prep work probably a month ago. Since then I have found a lot of other things to do. And today I finally decided to get around to just priming the red wall!! And I’m telling ya’ - it was unfortunatle just as I thought; more work than I was bargaining for.

Why? The repairing went ok actually. [I had some leaking around a window sill, and cleaning and patching that was easy] It was after the first coat of primer that something strange began to happen. Bubbles began to appear in the wall. Little tiny ones, and then bigger ones. Ok, so what does goof-ball here do? I decide to try to smooth them out. I am so not gonna tell you what happened. emoticon It isn’t a tragedy. I am just going to have to prime some of the areas again and make sure that they are smooth.

The whole thing is though, I really thought I could just tape it, prime it and then wait a couple of days, pick a color to paint. Oh well. I guess I’ll be callin’ another “Painter Guy” for a quote and schedule a paint job.

There are some things that no matter how much reading and watching you do, until you actually do some things, first with guidance and support there is no way that you can acquired the knowledge and skill to do it, particularly not well. For me, this weekend, it was painting.

And why is this my SP blog for today? For my health, weight loss and fitness SparkPeople sure has been a great way to learn and do what it takes to be a better me - physically, mentally, and even socially! I’m reading articles and blogs, and watching others succeed through the posts. I’m following the plans and steps (mostly) and I am doing things that are working to getting me to where I want to go and how I want to be. OH! And its cheap!
emoticon THANKS SP!!

Tomorrow, I think I'll just go to the gym!!

probably a good idea... I love the DIY attitude though; good job!

If it were me; I would keep the livingroom (if the green is light) and maybe the "guess" room (love that name!) but i dont know about the "merlot" carpet. If its red ish Id replace that! But that would be MY choice for MY home. You do what you FEEL best. Hugs

I'd rather go to the gym than paint!

But then you probably knew that already. I'm not much of an interior fact I'm not one at all. I'm just an exterior rebuilder (body wise) emoticon

Whether be it the house or your body, following the plan of good health and nutrition won't lead you astray and get you in shape to take on that house!
