I want to be in the 20% group

I watched a program today, CBS's Sunday Morning. I like to lay in bed on Sundays and watch the show, they usually have interesting bits to share. Today was no different but today the show was focused around weight and titled "Size Matters". The show looked at different aspects of being overweight even interviewing a talk show host that believes big is beautiful but even she has limits. She stated that being big was okay until you couldn't tie your shoes, walk up a flight of stairs and other indicators that your health was really being impacted. I don't know that I can agree with her statement given what I have learned here on SparkPeople. As the show progressed they offered up other tidbits of information about weight loss. One of those tidbits was this stunner: Only 20% of people that do lose weight manage to keep it off. For this bit they offered up Valerie Bertinelli and Kirstie Allie as evidence of successful and unsuccessful weight loss. I knew that our bodies have a set point and that is one of the reasons to lose weight in a slow and steady manner. Slow and steady from my understanding helps your body change that set point. I did not know that only 20% manage to keep the weight off. I want to be in that 20% group. I have kept my clothes that are now too big as a good luck charm. If I get rid of them then I will need them. If I hang onto them then I won't need them. If I am to be in this special 20% group I must continue the work on my health daily. FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. Not just for a few days, weeks, months, forever. Can I do that? At this point I feel I can say absolutely but life has a way of shaking things up and in the back of my mind I am concerned a bit about my eating/exercising response to stress. Thankfully, if I do slip or fall flat on my face I am glad that SparkPeople is here for me. As I imagine myself at my goal weight I wondered if I would still log my food and eagerly check my email for any Spark news. You bet I will! Hope everyone out there in Sparkland had a great weekend!

    You are right - the statistics are against us - that makes me want it more - to prove that I'm not a statistic! You can too.
    Once you loose - I forget - 20 -40 pounds and keep it off for a year - you can contact Brown University and join the National Weightloss Registry. I recently did. They keep track of people who have lost weight, what they have done and continue to do. Of course Spark People was mentioned in my paper work.

    You can do it! Lets all make a new statistic - SparkPeople are 80 - 90 percent of that 20%!

    I'll bet you that everyone who makes it into that 20% to keep the weight off was in the 80% category a few times before it stuck. It's not about losing weight, it's about living healthier, and it sounds like you've got that figured out. Congrats, and great blog posting. Thanks!
