accident up-date

Sunday, January 09, 2011

wow, been a week

of course, it's as easy to say, it's only been a week

definitely life-altering- i've left the house once, thurday, my dughter came out and took me to dr appt

the 2 daughters were here that day and ran some errands for me too

this being dependent is not fun

dr had nothing to say- said it'll take a while to heal- what does that mean?

i am also having other side affects now from the accident/recovery-- i can not lie down, so i've been sitting up for 8 days now- well my feet are like double their size , and ankles, and calves-- says that'll take a while to heal also

so, i've been trying to sit up and put my feet up, but, i only last about an hour at a time- that does not yet appear to be helping any

have been on a steady diet of vicodin- really doesn't seem to be helping any-- i just took my first percocet- we'll see what that does

you hear how easy it is for people to get addicted to pain pills- i have that worry in the back of my head

car is being totaled- i think what they're giving me is low- but........any way you look at it- you're still losing out.........gotta get something else now, and, needless to say, i'm doing some exploring into "safer" vehicles-- but it's still gonna mean another, longer loan.......

haven't gotten a rental car yet- no need- i sure can't drive, but it adds to my feeling of "helplessness"

i really do hate all this whining- but, first off, wanted to up-date all ya'all who've been so kind, and-- whining/blogging does help some

amazing how many lawyer letters i get in the mail every day- yes, it is a "sue-ing" world

not in any way how i foresaw getting into 2011- so much for exercise, getting a rhythym going again, etc

makes me wonder too tho- am i ready to die? what if i had died that, i don't have my affairs in order

need to get that done

it also does re-affirm all concepts of NEVER wanting to be dependent- so- gotta get healthy!

you spark pople rock..........thanx for caring so much

FYI: there's an awful lof of commercials on tv in the middle of the night!

i suspect- no matter how flabby your hind end may be-- sitting on it day after day after day--- it gets sore!!!

This takes me back to the one or two accidents I have survived! I so feel your pain!

I DEFINITELY would call the doctor about the swelling in your legs and feet--you could have blood clot(s) which, if they break loose, could cause a stroke or something.

It is VERY IMPORTANT to keep moving, even if just walking very slowly to prevent blood clots, especially in your feet and legs.

Also, ask your doctor whehter to start taking an aspirin a day to reduce and/or prevent blood clots. (Let it dissolve under your tongue, it will get to the blood faster and won't upset your stomach as much.) Be sure to tell your doctor everything, from start to finish (the same doctor all the time so the clinic knows it all from start to finish), and will know how to act if something get worse.

DO apply heat to that areas that are stiff and ice to the areas that hurt and are swollen too, like sore muscles. If an area does both, then ice and cold (first one then the other).

If you have aching pain in the ribs area, a medium tight band around the ribs might help keep any damaged cartilage from hurting as much until it heals.
Here are some very easy exercises to do while sitting that you might be able to do. They are a combination of physical therapy and isometrics. To them to prevent clots and putting on weight while you're not able to move around much (eat even less too):

Be sure to ask your doctor before starting any exercise program, especially to ascertain if the exercise routine will aggravate or worsen any injuries you already have. Never force movements, and don’t do anything that hurts.

Armchair Exercises – Repeat means start with three and work up to 10.

    Feet and Toes
Lift your feet a few inches off the floor a couple of inches and wiggle your toes.

Now, slowly lower your legs to floor then slowly raise them back up until the knee joint is locked. Repeat.

Keeping your feet off the floor, extend your legs and push your feet forward as if pointing at something in the distance with your toes, hold for a few seconds then pull your feet back, pointing the toes to towards the ceiling.

Put both feet back on the floor, hip width apart, and come up onto the balls of your feet, lifting your heels off the floor. Hold for a few seconds then relax and repeat.

With your feet flat on the floor, lift one foot at a time and slowly rotate your ankles around in small circles (both directions) to loosen off any excess tension.

After your feet, move your attention to your lower legs and calf muscles.

Sit up straight and tense the lower leg muscles, holding for a few seconds, feeling the various muscles contract before relaxing. Repeat.

Relax and bring your attention to the upper legs. Tense the upper leg muscles and hold for a few seconds, Repeat three times, again building up the tension to your maximum each time.

Sit with your feet hip width apart and come up onto the balls of your feet, lifting your heels off the floor. Push your legs down as if trying to push your heels back onto the floor, whilst resisting and tensing the legs so that the heels don’t actually go back to the floor. Relax and repeat several times.

Next, sit with your feet hip width apart, but with your knees together. Start squeezing your knees together and tense your upper leg muscles. Do this several times, gradually building with each one up to your maximum effort.

Stay in the same position, but this time put your hands on the outside of your knees. Push outwards, trying to open your knees apart, but resist with your hands so that they don’t open. Start slowly, building to your maximum effort.

Hands on hips, sit up as straight as possible and tip the hips forward and back (stretches and strengthens the lower back) and while tipping the hips backward (as if pressing the back against a wall) lift the tummy muscles all the way from the bottom of the belly upward and then squeeze the sides toward the middle.

With knees bent, push the feet hard against the floor (one at a time or both together) then relax, then lift the feet and straighten the legs. Repeat.

Wiggle your fingers quickly for a few seconds on both hands.

Then open and close your hands quickly, extending your fingers to the maximum and making a fist each time you close your hand.

Relax your hands and wrists and give them a good shake – as if you’ve just washed them then realized there is nothing to dry them on.

Stop shaking and gently bend and rotate your wrists through their full range of movement. Add light pressure by gently pushing the hand forward and back from the wrist with the opposite hand.

When we say the upper body, we’re talking arms, shoulders, chest and back.

    * Raise both arms horizontally, out to your sides, shoulder height as if you were doing an impression of an aeroplane. Push out your arms in both directions, reaching as far out as physically possible, feeling the stretch across your back and chest.

    * Relax from this stretch but keep your arms out straight and start to move them very slowly in small circles as if running your finger around the outside rim of a coin. Do ten small circles forward, then ten small circles backwards. Relax the arms and shake them off.

    * Put both hands together as if you have just clapped, hold them out in front of you, elbows raised and push your hands together, tensing your arms, chest, shoulders and back for 10 seconds.

    • Put your arms on the arms of the chair, and push down. Repeat.

    • Put your hands on the arms and push down. Repeat.

    Neck and head
Okay, move your attention to your head and neck. Your neck and spine are very delicate and should only ever be exercised slowly and gently, and without tension, particularly when rotating the head in a circular motion. Never force movements, and don’t do anything that hurts.

Slowly drop your head forward, taking your chin toward your chest an inch or two for a few of seconds.

Bring your head back to its normal position then take it slowly backwards. Again, hold for a few seconds.

With the head tilted back, drop your mouth open and slowly close again, pushing the chin forward. Perform several times.

Bring head back to normal centre position, looking forward. Look to the left side, hold for a few seconds, then change to the right side and hold for a few seconds.

Bring your head back to its normal position, drop your chin an inch to the chest and slowly roll your head in a gentle, relaxed circular motion. Do this several times in both directions, slowly easing out any tensions and stiffness.

Shoulders and upper back (start with three and work up to ten):
Hands on hips, stretch by arching the back backward starting at the lower back moving up to the neck (flexibility) and roll down again

Hold up the head, roll the shoulder joints back by holding the elbows at the sides and bringing hands from the front (at waist level) to the sides.

Hold the arms straight out from the shoulders and/or up in the air and roll the hands forward and backward (helps prevent dislocation injuries) unless, of course, you’ve already got shoulder injuries.

    • Stan
d 1 foot from a wall, put your hands on the wall, and lean into the wall. Push with your arms until you are upright again. Repeat.
    • Stand in a doorway with hands against the sides for balance. Bend the knees a little, then straighten up again. Repeat.

    Good health!

Your Spark Friends are here to listen to you and it is important for you to vent when you need to. Though the news isn't what we would hope it to be, thanks for posting the update. You are in my thoughts and prayers, and I hope you can get some pain relief quickly!! I understand your reluctance to be dependent on others - it is a very frustrating situation for you in many respects. Sometimes we need to let others help us, and in a way we give them a gift by allowing them to do that! Blessings, Nattacia

Take it easy so your body can have time to heal. I know it's hard to be patient, especially when you don't want to be dependent. I hope you can lie down soon because I know that will make a HUGE difference in how you feel. I will continue to pray for you that not only will your body heal completely and in a timely fashion, but that something good will come from this experience. We are here for you. emoticon Christine

I just hate that you're going through this...when we go thru something like this, it does kind of bring thoughts of our own mortality into focus...I know I don't have all of my affairs in order either...definitely something to think about, unpleasant tho it may be.

And you know, even tho you're not feeling all that great, you can still make me laugh!! All those commercials on in the middle of the night...

    Take care of yourself!

Take good care of yourself Jewells 'cause Spark wouldn't be the same without you! I hope you can get everything settled with the insurance soon. I agree with the earlier comment that getting over an accident is similar to grieving. You'll work through the process and come out the other side even better!

It sounds like you are taking this accident and making some positive decisions from it. Good for you!!! These are the wake up calls that can really turn into true life changing events. I pray that your recoup time is quick and you will be back on your feet ready to take on your next goal!!

Recovering from a major accident is a bit like grieving. You lose things, things are compromised, and there is healing to be done both physical and emotional.

Keep blogging, keep working through it.

    Keeping you in my prayers.

So sorry! When I was in an accident I went to a chiropractor for relief. It was the first time I had ever been to one. It really helped. As I mentioned, I worked in the insurance industry for many years. My advice skip the lawyer and settle the claim yourself. Why pay a lawyer 1/3 of your injury settlement. Take care of yourself. I hope you feel well again soon.
