FEF Challenge - Vacation Planning

Friday, May 27, 2011

Our challenge for this week is to pick a city or area we plan to go to or would like to go to, and blog about two healthy times of food available there and one healthy activity. My husband and I plan to take our granddaughter with us for a few days in the 1000 Islands area of NY state sometime this summer. We were there last summer also so are somewhat familiar with what is available.

One of the healthiest food choices is the seafood that is caught locally and served in many of the restaurants along the St. Lawrence River. There is a variety of fish and many variations on how it is prepared. It's a healthy choice when grilled and no sauces added, or when served in a salad. Another healthy option is the vegetarian meals that many of the small cafes serve. Being a tourist area, there's a large variety of cuisines to choose from and most of the restaurants have healthy options on their menus.

There are a lot of activities to burn calories. Last year we toured a castle on one of the islands and there were 4 floors and a lot of stairs. There's a second castle on a different island and we plan to tour that one this time. It's large and a lot of climbing and walking. Combine that with a granddaughter who isn't happy till she sees every nook and cranny, and you have a great workout! :) We also plan to do a nature cruise that goes to one of the islands and once there, a guide leads a 45-minute hike across the island to see the varieties of trees and wildflowers.

Our other FEF challenge for this week is to share one of our "secrets" of success. One thing that has helped me a lot is to always have something with me to do if I sit down to watch tv. I usually crochet, and that keeps my hands busy and my mind off of food.

I hope you're all having a great week!

Hugs,
Karen

I also thought that vacation sounds good! I like hiking too and also didn't realize there were castles up there! Before we moved here, I also didn't realize there were castles (mostly ruins) in Okinawa, Japan, either!!! But talk about climbing - I have climbed around on 2 of them so far and my goal is to visit ALL of them before next year, just hopefully in drier weather than the last one. It was very slippery! They also have that is restored and it is gorgeous. So sounds like a good plan for your vacation. We also are planning ours but are going to visit our adult "kids" and grandchild on the east coast - mostly I am trying to plan for getting at least an hour's worth of exercise most days and drinking a lot of water as usual. Foodwise, will vary but I will TRY to stick to what I have been doing to lose weight, not expecting to keep losing on vacation but I don't want to gain either!
p.s. to Mellil: I also love crabs but I now have 1 new recipe for a baked or broiled fish that is WONDERFUL too! We don't have blue crabs here so I do plan to get my crab cakes a few times while on vacation!!!

Hey, Karen, this sounds like a wonderful vacation place. I will have to mention it to DH. We are always looking for new places to go. Thanks for sharing. And thanks for the tip. I used to do that. Now I have fallen to having a laptop in front of me most of the time. I think I will get a crochet project for the summer. Thanks! Hugs, Darlene

I didn't know there were any CASTLES in New York! That's AWESOME! I might have to look into this. MY little granddaughter would LOVE to go to a CASTLE!!! Oh I can see her now dressed in her CINDERELLA dress! emoticon

Since we live 5 minutes from the Chesapeake Bay we are HUGE seafood lovers! And do ya know the ONLY problem with that? Fish that grow up in SALT WATER absorb a LOT of sodium! Man that bummed me out! We used to eat a TON of shrimp... and crab... NOW it's a special treat! Crab should NOT be a special treat when you live near the Chesapeake Bay! LOL!
