Could it be H. Pylori

Sunday, June 30, 2013

I've been dealing with gastric distress for so many years on and off and have been given so many differing diagnosis's. GERD, irritable bowel and, swallowing air are the ones that come to mind.

The past few months it's been quite bad, so I've given up coffee and gluten for 6 weeks, added probiotics and digestive enzymes with varying degree's of relief.. it just seems to have a mind of it's own. I also don't eat after 6pm as that's a sure recipe for gas pain. I eat very little sugar and even cut back on fruit to 2 servings a day.

It's all in the stomach and I produce massive amounts of air (gas) and burp sometimes all night long. it will wake me up from a dead sleep as it's like sleep apnea and I can't breath until all the gas comes up.. I've had esophageal spasming with it as well and ended up in emergency a few times with what feels like a heart attack, but isn't.. thank goodness.

I saw the Dr. on Thursday and once again pleaded for an answer, so this time he's going to test me for H. Pylori, the nasty little bug that lives in peoples stomachs and is one of the causes of stomach ulcers. He's also testing me for celiac, but I doubt that's my problem.

I've been off my acid reducing pills all weekend to prepare for the test (a breath test) on Tuesday and I kind of hope this is the problem and I can finally get this under control.. if it's not.. back to the drawing board.. this has been plaguing me for close to 25 years now, long enough!! I've been trying to get back up to my goal weight, but eating isn't the most enjoyable thing to do right now.

Anyone here have anything similar going on? I'd love to hear from you and if you could share things that have worked for you, even better.

Sorry to hear of all of your difficulties. I do not have any experience with these types of symptoms, but I will be praying that you get an accurate diagnosis soon so that you can find some relief.

We've spoken about this before, but I don't get the belching or gas pains. Only strictures in my esophagus and heartburn, most likely due to a hiatal hernia. But I was wondering if you have the gas from gallbladder related issues? Just a thought.

I hope they get it figured out soon, 25 years is a long time to suffer gastric distress.

Great job your doctor thought about this, as the breath test is not unpleasant,
and if it turns out to be H. Pylori, then it can be eradicated with a few weeks of combined treatment.
I keep my fingers crossed for you!

I don't have anything similar going on, but hopefully the doctor will finally be able to identify what IS happening so you can find an effective treatment - hang in there!

I don't have your exact problem but with my foot surgery on Friday, came pain meds that have caused intense GERD-like symptoms. Also the anesthesia during surgery added to these symptoms.

Right now I must eat to take my pain meds but even drinking water causes me to burp and have hiccups. And last night I woke up with very severe GERD pain. With GERD meds and sitting up, I was able to find relief fairly quickly but I must say, I have a great amount of empathy and compassion for what you are going through, having now had a taste of that pain myself.

As soon as we can back off the pain meds (won't be able to happen for a while), I'll do so since that will allow the GERD symptoms to lessen. Hope the doctors can help you and they can figure out long term relief for you. emoticon
