Starting my 1,000th (and final) Diet this week

Beginning my 1000th and final diet.

At first glance, you would think that is an exaggeration; however, as I reflect on starting a new diet most every Monday morning for the past 28 years, I realize that 1000 is an understatement.

A partial list of the diets I’ve tried include: Atkins Diet, Beverly Hills Diet, Body for Life, Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, Detox diets, The Diet Solution, Slim Fast, Glycemic Index Diet, Hilton Head Diet, Juice Diets, Low Carb, Medifast, Mediterranean Diet, New Atkins Diet Plan, Nutrisystem, OPTIFAST Diet, Paleo Diet (aka Stone Age Diet), Sugar Busters, Sugar Solution, T-factor diet, and Weight Watchers, to name a few off the top of my head.

There are others, most of which I would like to forget about.

A sound eating program is fine once you are ready to do what is necessary to succede. Some of the program listed above have truly help many people. My true problem has never really changed.....My true problem is me.

This week I weighed in at 485 pounds. I have lots of stories I can tell you about being overweight. (And I may one day)

I’ve heard many things said about “fat” people:
“They don’t care” (This is ridiculous)
“They have no control.” (I went over a month on OPTIfast without eating anything….)

Looking back, I trace my obesity to getting a desk job in my earlies 20’s while still having the appetite of an athlete. How does one go from athletic to almost 500 pounds?…. That pretty easy….put on an average of one pound a month for 25 years!

One pound a month……I could have probably prevented gaining that just by avoiding soft drinks. But it is sneaky, it slips up on you. I have a very large frame and even at 300 pounds did not look fat. I let my schedule dominate my life. I didn’t take the time for me ; to do the things I needed and wanted to do for myself.

I have no problems with exercise; except for making the time to do it

I have no problems with proper eating; except for making the time to plan for it

I have no problem with a lot of things…..except managing my time and getting the “little things” done.

I am wonderful in a crisis….when you need a lot done at a whirlwind pace for a short period of time….I am your man. It’s the little trivial day to day things I am not good at. I have never placed them with great importance, until now the little trivial things have become a crisis.

I know myself, I know what has worked in the past, and I know a lot more about what doesn’t work.

This week, I’ve reset the goals again. My 1000st diet is now my 1st Lifestyle.

I will be following the ideas in the new SparkPeople book, except that I have modified them for someone of my size and my physical abilities (or lack thereof.)

If you are a young professional, sitting behind a desk and reading this……do know that one pound a month is a lot! Set your priorities correctly….work is NOT the most important thing in the world. I just hate that it has taken me to the age of 50 to realize this.

Enjoy your family, your children, and stay fit. The older you get, the harder it becomes…..until one day it is too late.

I hope that I am not at the too late point. But I have not quit. I am hoping to attain a weight loss of 1% body weight per week. Achieving that would put me at goal in 629 days. As the Spark Founder recommended, I have the counters on my wall at work now. Today is day 4 with 626 to go.

I wish I had completed this counter thing about 25 years ago. Because I did not, I have been over my ideal weight for some 9,125 days.

If I fall short of that pace, it will be no big deal…..if the Lord is willing and keeps me in good health I will get there; and praise him for the helping me to maintain the strength, desire and motivation to get this done.

Whatever your personal goals are….make them a priority….don’t wait!

My Best Wishes to Everyone.
