On this the first day of spring I am remembering my mother who has been gone now for nearly ten years. From the earliest days I can remember mom would wake me first thing in the morning on the first day of spring with these words: "Spring, the birds are on the wing. Well isn't that absurd, I thought the wings were on the bird."
Even when I was in my sixties I would receive a phone call first thing on the morning of the spring equinox with my mom quoting this old saying.
My mom was a wonderful woman, probably one of the smartest women I have ever known. She graduated top of her class in high school, became the librarian at a major college, learned Russian and Arabic just for starters. She was full of life and always up for an adventure. She was my confidant, my life coach and one of my best friends. She began teaching me how to cook when I was around twelve and I continue to cook regularly to this day, a life skill that I have passed on to my children.
It's spring mom. Rest in peace.
