Starting Over

Current Weight: 333.2 lbs

As I have started everything over from square one. You realize how far in different area's you had come in different parts of your weightloss or fitness journey. I have had several machines over the years and I can say my recumbent bike I like the best so far. I did a great deal of research before buying mine and I wanted something that I could do all winter and still have some activity. One thing I noticed today and each day is I get bored riding it even with listening to my Ipod. SO what do you do when that happens? I even tried playing games on my tablet while riding my bike to see if that helped too. So today I did something different, I lifted my very first weights in many many months.

Now granted these are only 3lb weights but, I did bicep curls during the middle of my mile and it helped take my mind off watching the time on my bike. Small steps being consistent is better than zero steps in the other direction. My plan over the next few months is very basic and simple. The next several weeks I will ride my bike daily for at least a mile each day with different resistance settings and this will be my foundation I build everything else around going forward. I am also going to try to do min steps of 2,000 per day as well and keep going until I am very consistent on these before moving onto anything higher. Do I miss going to the gym? You bet I do.....but I have to make this work for me right now in the capacity of doing what's right and better for my health. I live in an area where there is no Planet Fitness near me...and that being said oh how I wish there was because $10 month or even $20 a month for black label membership is cheaper than the only gym in my town. But, we all have to work around our obstacles and set goals and make them work for ourselves.I felt so accomplished today when I added 3 sets of 15 just bicep curls and the biggest change I noticed is my heart rate went from 89 on the bike only to immediately jumped to 109 when I started with the weights.

I know some ladies do not like to lift weights and I sure was one of them! In the beginning of my journey 5 years ago when I first ever stepped into a gym I had a trainer and let me tell you me and him got into plenty of full blown arguments in the gym that ended in shouting matches with one of us storming off. HE was trying to teach me for every muscle group there is a dumbell that will target and isolate that muscle group. To me I just wanted to take the easy way out and just use the machines. I would get mad....he would get mad....and it would lead to a whole lot of cursing on both our parts.

I did not trust him to do his job and I thought I knew everything (and I didn't). Thankfully he stuck by me and taught me and rode out all the bumps with me and in the beginning I hated the 100% dumbell workouts because let me tell you....I hurt in places I never thought anyone could possibly hurt and it would take me days to fully recover. I went from working out 20 minutes to almost 2 hours at a time. So my trainer did his job and he coached me every time I needed him and was always there to give me advice or support. Eventually he would intergrate other machines into my workouts and taught me the importance of focusing on different muscle groups each workout. If ever I couldn't do something he would modify it so I could do it so that was to be one of my greatest learning experiences. I have always appreciated the way I was taught and understand now when you are finished with a great workout how EMPOWERED you feel at the end. In those feelings come a great sense of accomplishment and confidence to go forward. So now I do love working with dumbells and the smith machine for lifting because with that foundation you have so many possibilities in what you can accomplish.

Other things I noticed when I was going to the gym all the time I did not lose weight like normal people might. But my body changed in other ways.....I was losing clothing sizes and inches. I really want to get back to that place again of feeling empowered and accomplished. With that you need a foundation and you can't build a house without a foundation.

It is great that you are starting out with a plan to gradually work through getting healthier. I like the recumbant bike a lot but I had not thought about adding weights. I use a machine that I use my arms and legs at the same time. I can get steps that way by using my arms. LOL

You have made a plan and I am sure you will follow through with it.

Take it a day at a time and you will succeed. Add to the exercise just one day of following a healthy eating plan and bingo you will have super success.

    I am rooting for you

Valerie, you are doing an awesome job of setting up your plan of what to do and also very creative to keep it from getting so boring .. I remember years ago when I could exercise I made myself some ankle weights and honestly was very successful in using them .. so , it sounds like you are on the right track and sometimes starting over is actually good ! Keep on keeping on , you are doing great .. emoticon emoticon

    Hugs and Prayers,

emoticon I ride my recumbent bike when watching tv sometimes it help me to keep from watching the monitor ... I need to get me some weights & try that out. Sometimes some people's weight loss doesn't always show in pounds, if you lose clothes size ... I consider that a win!
