New routine

Monday, September 14, 2020

I'm starting my 4th week at the new job. It's going really good. The job is not hard for the most part. Thinking on my feet seems to be the biggest challenge. Rules change according to who's on shift so I'm trying to make my own set of rules that makes sense according to the best of what everyone else is doing. You can't be a hard task master with these people, but you can't let them run over you either. For those that don't know, I'm working in a homeless shelter. It's pretty straightforward work and for the most part everyone is really great. My coworkers are really easy to work with and nothing is overwhelming. In fact usually there's a fair amount of downtime at night and I can read or watch tv/listen to music. I've been on a new testament reading plan, the goal is to finish it in 30 days. I'm over halfway through and that seems to be what I do most nights at work.

I'm still barbering, one day a week, on Saturdays. Saturdays I work both jobs, makes for a super busy, but good day. I've been absolutely slammed at the shop, been averaging 65 bucks an hour take home, that's a ton of haircuts considering they are 12 bucks a piece. People have been very generous with tips. I feel blessed. Rocky wants me to add some mornings during the week but I'm not ready for that. I'd rather have a packed Saturday than two slower days. Overall it's working out well.......making about 800-900 extra a month just on those 4 days. I'm happy to do it. Kinda nice because Saturday is my Friday, so after I'm done with my long Saturday I can rest. Another nice thing is I work swing shift at the shelter, so I don't have to get up early. I'm naturally a bit of a night owl so it works out really well. I miss my evenings with Tim a bit, but this gives us both some alone time which neither of us minds. During the week we only see eachother about 10 minutes.............secret to our marital success, lol!!!!

I haven't really made much time to exercise lately. The air quality is so terrible, outdoor activity isn't possible. The gym is closed so that's not possible, but indoor activity is still very possible. I broke a sweat today organizing and cleaning but that's really not an everyday activity. I'm considering indoor walking, I've done it before and it's not my favorite, but it's definitely better than nothing. I like adding push ups and sit ups when I do my indoor activites. I'm settling into my new routine so it's about time to add exercise.

I'm on day 2 of tracking my food. When quarantine was going I had great success with counting carbs, but I got off track and realized how overwhelmingly bored I was with eating only veg, meat, cheese and eggs.........I love those things, but not 3 meals a day, every day. I think for success I need variety. So, tracking calories it is. I still have it is my mind to keep the carbs in check, but not as strict as I was. 20 carbs a day really isn't much at all. Plus I was really missing fruit. I crave atleast a piece every few days, especially during the summer.

Well, that's about all I have to report. New changes, new job, new routine, new coworkers, new work schedule, it's all good. Oh and I'm making considerably more money than I was and I have benefits!!!!!! Things like paid vacation and healthcare, things I never had in barbering. I love the freedom of being an independent contractor, but I think I'll be able to handle a few rules in order to reap the goodness of benefits. Paid sick time!!!! Retirement!!! Yeah, I assumed I'd never have those things. I'm pleased.

It's time to celebrate the new, but also to plan for the future and take steps towards my health. A good job is one piece of the puzzle I've been trying to solve for years, but lasting healthy habits is the other main part. I need a good routine and I need to stick with it. I should have known low carbs wasn't the answer for me, I've done it many times with great the beginning. I am not disciplined enough to stict to low carb eating for the rest of my life, unfortunately. But, I know if I want to drop some weight quickly it works..............just have to have a plan to not gain it back.

My summer travels have been to Turkey, Rome, London and Israel..............all from the comfort of my recliner!!!! I love my travel shows. Escape for those without much travel money in their pocket books. Our time off from work, both of us unemployed with no unemployment completely depleted our savings. Luckily we had savings, but it's time to save again, especially if we ever want to take a proper vacation............feels like it's been ages since we've got away.

So, overall things are good. Tim got the job he wanted to. Local position, home early, up early. He seems to like it. He's also making more than he was, so overall we're in a better position than we were before we lost our jobs............financially anyway, and in other ways too.

It feels so good to report good news. I feel like I'm always reporting downer stories about our's nice to have some positivity to share.

Today I picked up a load of groceries that we'd ordered online. I've never done that before. It was awesome. They brought is all to me, helped me load it, it was really nice, I liked it. I think I'll do it again. If only they could unload it and put it!!!!

I came home, unloaded the groceries, put them away, vacuumed, swept, mopped and sprayed down the bathtub, will scrub it later. After that I made shrimp pesto fettucine for Tim's dinner, he thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll put something together for myself later. Considering roasting a butternut squash later.

Anyway, busy weekend, all is good. Hope you are all well. Hugs.

I'm happy to hear that you like your new job and there are benefits! WOO HOO!!

I agree the secret to marital success is seeing each other for only 10 minutes a day, or completely ignoring each other all day long and then having dinner in front of the telly!! Ha ha ha!!
