5% Challenge 10 Reasons List

Monday, January 04, 2021

My 5% challenge prompt for this blog is to list the 10 reasons that I want to lose weight, considering all the factors that I want to change, how I want to look and feel, and what I want to be able to do.

This is supposed to be for motivation, and our leader provided this quote: "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." by Jim Ryun. However, I want to reverse that:

"Habit is what gets you started, motivation is what keeps you going."

I've done a lot of reading into motivation, habits, and the other factors involved in behavior over the past few years both for myself and because I teach, so I want to use these ideas to help my students, and the book "The Motivation Myth" really was eye-opening in that for most people, motivation is not a starting factor, but something that builds when you get moving and start seeing something happening.

Don't get me wrong, I think you need a strong "Why" to have behavior change. The book "Start With Why" is also fantastic, but I want to be clear that this list isn't my motivation - it's my WHY. This is why I want to build habits that honestly, are uncomfortable and difficult at first or that force me to re-evaluate my current world and turn things upside down from what I thought I knew. However, the motivation is what happens when I see movement toward my WHY, motivation happens when I step past the "have to" and "this sucks" parts and realize that these efforts work, and here's the tiny victory, and I want more. I'm not motivated to get up and go running in freezing weather, but I do it, because I know WHY and it's in my calendar. The motivation comes at mile 2, and gets me to the finish line.

Here's my 10 Reasons WHY I Want To Lose Weight
1. I will be less jiggly when I run
2. I will feel more energetic and productive
3. I will be less likely to get injured
4. I will feel confident both on video and in front of my classes
5. My overall metabolic health will improve
6. I will be less inflamed
7. I will be more flexible and my joints will feel looser
8. I will be a role model for my friends and family
9. I will able to accomplish my distance running goals
10. I will be functional and healthy my whole life

Wow! Fantastic whys and the only thing I would add for myself is, In the beginning I didn't define my WHY, but I just KNEW I had to take steps to improve my health. As I plodded along I discovered my WHY's (many like you listed) and that helped move forward.
