Deena - I hope that the new Pain Mgt Specialist proves to be more helpful.

Thank you both!

I do see a Pain Mgt specialist but she's been less than helpful so starting in Feb I will transfer to a new one in the Spine Center. My nutrition is good esp with high calcium foods, but salt was always a "problem" in the past. I loved it. Too much. Looking back if I'm honest with myself and you, I have to admit that extreme dieting set me up for this. In recent years, I have cut back on salt which was easier than I thought.

Kris, I've been on Fosamax, Boneva, and a Calcitonin nasal spray but developed side effects from all. The new drug works differently as it's a parathyroid hormone. I take in more than enough calcium and vitamin D3 via foods and supplements, but my body only excretes it instead of sending it to my bones. Seriously, they say my only hope is getting that drug, Forteo. I think we should start playing the lottery. LOL

All the tips are great reminders. I know a rug that has my name on it (LOL) that will be put in the garage today.

Thanks!!!

Deena - I really feel for you. Osteoporosis isn't to be sneezed at. My Mum was on weekly Fosamax for it.

There are some things that you can do to help reduce the risk of further fractures:

* Ensure that your nutrition is good - a referral to a Registered Dietitian would be beneficial so ask your Dr/Specialist. Keep a detailed record of what and how much you eat (via Nutrition Tracker) and take some printouts with you to the Dietitian appointment.

* Reduce salt consumption (it causes the body to release more calcium from the bones.)

* If you have any mats/rugs on the floor, remove them to reduce the risk of tripping. If you can't remove them, get them taped so they can't 'walk/lift' causing trips.

* Ensure that you have regular eye checks. Often falls are the result of poor eyesight, and not everyone realizes that their vision isn't that great any more because is is usually a slow change.

Hugs,
Kris xxx

Vent!!!! You are in a situation that isn't your fault. But you are the one suffering and depending on bureaucrats to do what is right. I agree that seeing a pain specialist might be the best solution right now. I don't remember if you had seen one before but I know when I went the options were very limited then several years later and they had new answers. Maybe they will have some suggestions for you. I will keep you in my thoughts.

I'm venting: After three spinal fractures, averaging one every 3 mo. since June, I saw a spine specialist again. I had gotten my hopes up because surely there would be something he could do like vertebroplasty. I mean, after all, it WAS the Spine Center, right? There is nothing he can do, thanks to my osteoporosis, and in fact, he said there is a 4th one "waiting to happen" after viewing the CT scan. Friends, I'm scared to move and I was very active before fracturing the first one while doing yoga. Two of them have happened spontaneously without warning. The one drug that holds promise for the specific reason for my worsening osteoporosis is so expensive it's totally out of reach. My insurance is denying it. I have a wonderful doctor who is fighting with them so all that's left right now are prayers that they see it'd be more cost-effective to pay for the daily drug for 18 mo than all the PT, meds, doctor visits, etc. I'm trying to stay positive but sometimes it's really hard. emoticon emoticon

As someone who has been in a similar position as yourself, I STRONGLY urge you to make an appointment with your Dr ASAP and tell him/her exactly what is going on and your thoughts about not wanting to live. (been there, done that!) If you aren't on medication re depression then your Dr will need to consider prescribing some, and also ask for a referral to a Therapist. My Psychologist worked wonders. Believe it or not, Psychologists can also help a person to deal with physical pain.

Have you been referred to a Pain Team? In NZ they are a team of Doctors including an Anesthetist, and can generally help you manage pain far better than just an Orthopedic or Family Dr can. I was also under a Pain Team.

I can tell you that sometimes the anger will cause more physical pain. When I dealt with the anger, the majority of the physical pain left. When people say "it's a load of my shoulders" they generally mean it in a metaphoric way, however I could physically feel that pain/weight lift off my shoulders. I no longer wake in the middle of the night, literally screaming - the pain and the anger was causing severe nightmares.

You can do this. I can assure you that you WILL come through this dark tunnel and you will be so glad that you didn't act on any negative thoughts. My situation started October 2001. My accident caused a big hold-up in traffic - people were being diverted where possible for 1 1/2 hours. They had to get a helicopter to me and fly me to hospital.

Please take care and don't forget to urgently talk with your Dr!

I just joined this group this morning. (11/8/20)
A little history about me..

I had a near death experience 1985.. I was hit on my motorcycle and it was a 70mph impact and I wasnt wearing a helmet. MOST people, unless youre a rider wont understand this, but when you wear a helmet, you dont have good peripheral vision, nor can you hear as well. It took me a year to recover through surgeries ands a full leg cast for that whole year. I was an excellent well seasoned rider, but its the other folks you have to watch out for. In this case, it happened so fast and there was no where for me to go, I was in Topanga Canyon in LA county with a mountain on my left and cliff on my right. So I had to hit her in the side of her car and I flew for several yards hitting the pavement full force.
After I was hit, and was flying, time stood still. after I had hit the ground, after I regained consciousness I was screaming with pain, I had a concussion and my leg was broken. It took forever for emergency to get to me coz it was a 2-lane and work hour traffic.

Over the years my body has been deteriorating. Especially the last 2 years at the speed of light.
I cant even do half the things I use to be able to do. I am in agony 24/7. Every single partn of my body is suffering from the damage done. And the older I get the more unbearable it all is.

I have even screamed out in theb night for God to have mercy and take myn life, because I have no life anymore.
Sometimes, most of the time, Im so angry and frustrated this is happening to me. Im still angry with the woman who almost took my life and sentenced me to a life of pain and misery.
I received a financial settlement, but no amount of money can ever bring my body back to the way it was.

I dont have much hope left and am in deep depression.

Im having my first surgery Nov. 23rd., a total knee replacement. Then awhile later, the other knee, then my spine. I have degenerative disk disease and I suffer from sciatica also.
Every part of my entire body is in pain 24/7. I have lost space between the disks in my neck and spine, and have a ruptured, disk bulge.
I also have neurological problems where the nerves in my body get pinched all over even in my elbow.

Sometimes, I just want to take my own life away. Like right now.
I am not living anymore, Im just waking every day in agony.
