A neighbor is removing trees covered in ivy from alongside the creek. Wonder if that will get him in trouble with the water people who demand limited access of anywhere from 50-200 feet from the waterway?!?

Someone's pet kitty didn't make it when interacting w/ vehicle traffic on the country road (too often, high rates of speed!).

Same thing for fairly large possum in the middle of the road.

Saw 2 squirrels either playing chase or chasing one another away?! They chatter & make a whole lot of noise!

Gorgeous walk on an OR beach... people, dogs, wave action, sand & surf.
Time well spent enjoying the pleasant temps. Not too much wind at all. And not too many people for a Wed. afternoon! -- A good dose of Vitamin Sea ALWAYS works for me!

Lots of cars at the Hantwick Rd trailhead to Moulton Falls park. Usually there's only two or three other cars.
My walking buddy and I met lots of people on the trail and most of them had dogs. Either lots of people have the week off or they are tired of being cooped up at home.

Have a great new year, I'm hoping that 2021 is better than 2020 was.

Over on the Lacamas Trial there was a 5 pt buck ambling in the small field...across the walking path...into the bramble, close to the lake.
* One gal was "freaked" out that he might charge. She was putting up all sorts of hand signals! I said, "I don't see another buck for it to fight with," and "I don't see any females!" ~ Most of them could really care less about people! (Including the ones that are eating in my front yard!)

When I was walking on the beach, I saw some clueless people who were letting their dog mess around w/ a seal pup that somehow came in w/ the tide. They messed around for over an hour. If they had a clue, they would have taken their dog toward the water to see if the critter could be coaxed back where it belonged.

But no. An hour later a volunteer w/ animal control came out hollering at people just walking by. The tide had already moved quite a ways from where the critter got stranded. She was posting signs and continuing to throw her "authority" around.

It's unfortunate that the crazies who let their dog engage w/ the seal pup and IMO CAUSED the whole mess, got to pretend they were "helpful" by "standing guard".
emoticon
Both my spouse & I think the animal probably died & was removed in the night by actual authorities.

Tonight must have been "check in with neighbors" day?! ~ I headed out, and one gal asked if I could use some strawberry starts as she is thinning out her patch. We talked for at least 35 min.

I told her it would be dark if I didn't get on down the road... So off I hustled. (I wear a bright orange construction person's reflective vest. But in the tree areas, it's still pretty unwise to be anywhere but in the ditch after dark!) Cars don't see you until it's too late...which is why the deer often get hit. (And of course, the deer will just jump into a car's path with no warning!)

So, I'm on the way back, a little more than 1/2 mile to go, and I see another neighbor out putting his trash for Thurs. AM pick-up. Found out they are expecting baby girl #3 in 3 weeks. -- (Unfortunately, her parents have not seen the grandkids since everyone got scared and stayed home. They have no plan to engage with the kids still.... Until???)

The blackberries along the country road are "ready". I've sampled several handfuls over the past 2 days.
Wondering if you know of a large patch in the County where I might be able to pick a gallon of them to freeze?

Glad to hear you are getting out & about.
-- Definitely true about construction going on in many places. We figure there are possibly as many as 2000 new dwellings w/in a 5 mile radius of our house. (Of course, NO change in roads.)

On our street, 3 new homes just w/ in the past 6-12 mon. Each are on 5 acres due to the ag. zoning limits. -- We are contemplating selling or building or emoticon emoticon emoticon
Most of my exercise continues to be tied to the farm. I worked 50+ hrs outside this week. And it is supposed to get hotter next week. We'll see what happens?!?

I'm still alive and walking. I moved my "long walk" to Monday. There don't seem to be as many cars in the parking area and not as many people on the trail.
I'm holding my own. I'm doing a little bit of weeding, a little bit of sewing, a little bit of reading, and my usual walking routine.
There's construction going on in our neighborhood. A new house was started before the "lock down". At least they had the foundation poured before the contractors had to stop. Now the house is up and has siding and windows, but no doors. There isn't a whole lot of activity there.
Next door to them a family moved in a year ago Thanksgiving. they have 5 kids and only 3 bedrooms, so earlier this month they started an add-on. The concrete for the foundation was poured on Wednesday. I'm guessing that they are adding two or three more bedrooms.

So.... I was not walking, but... I had to share that in the process of running the rider mower through the berry field, I saw at least 3 rabbits, 1 snake, 1 vole, and possibly one fox?!? Maybe it was the neighbor's cat?? All I know is that it high-tailed it up, over & out!

I never know how to figure exercise in the doing of farm work... Guess I depend on the scale for this one?!

And I did walk w/ a friend in the AM. Never been on the local dog park trail. It wasn't half bad.

I kid you not... I saw a neighbor (who IS short) take a HUGE dog walking on the country road. I would guess the dog may weigh in the neighborhood of 200#'s, give or take a few! The "crazy" was it looked almost like a child walking this dog!

And a great number of cars...! The neighbor said, "It sure was a LOT quieter during "lockdown".

@TOWHEE ...just wondering if the trail there ends up pretty muddy w/ the rain showers we've had (some heavier than not!)

Planning to meet up w/ a gal to walk on the Paden walkway on Wed. AM. We'll see if the weather cooperates?! -- Seems like a mix of clouds, showers, rain...forecast all week long.

Truly, via our weather station at our place, we are 9 inches LOW on rainfall...so I won't complain.

Broke my walking streak of 45 days on Saturday. What a "non-day" it was for me... emoticon
But decided not to blow "all 4 tires just because 1 is flat"...and started a new streak on Sunday!

Hi Berry,

I really haven't been keeping up with this thread (or any threads for that matter).
It's easy to get lost at Moulton Falls, since signage is skimpy at best.
Lots of people make the Moulton Falls/Lucia Falls mistake and the county's literature doesn't really help the matter.
I'm planning to go the Moulton Falls tomorrow if the rain stays away. I usually park at the Hantwick Rd. trailhead which is about a mile east of Lucia Falls and about three miles west of the Moulton Falls parking on Lucia Falls Rd.
I'm finished with newsletters for a couple of weeks so I should be able to finish all the blocks for the current quilt.

My kids brought Mother's Day Brunch to me at Lewisville Park. And then we walked along the river + enjoyed the rhododendron bushes all in bloom!

Some people were already enjoying the water & we watched a drake (male duck) fly upstream & then float/swim down stream at least 2 different times. He seemed to be enjoying the day as well!

By noontime, after dealing with the flattened tire, the out-of-air spare, and the overall "annoyingness" of the whole ordeal, we took a short walk (not the one intended) along the river & snapped a few shots w/ the phone camera.

Lots of people were arriving to enjoy lunch together with families on Mother's Day weekend.
emoticon

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Of course, I didn't mention that I understood (sent directions/address) that my friend & I would meet at Moulton Falls. -- She went to Lucia Falls.
Meanwhile, I walked from the first parking lot on over to the overflow parking lot to see if she were there. -- Along the way I chatted w/ a 30-something who had an interesting "take" on how to make money in this current situation. (I kept trying to tell him, that if people aren't/can't work(ing), they aren't going to have "extra" money to spend on the Nike shoes that his company designs. His simple response was, "Everyone has to have shoes?!")

From the overflow parking location, I FAILED in sense-of-direction & went the wrong way on the road to get back to 1st parking lot where my car was. AND cell phone was spotty. Couldn't reach my friend. Walked all the way to 30500 on whatever road goes by both Fall parks.....?!?!? Finally realized I was NOT headed the way I should (since I remembered the address of where I parked, and the numbers were getting LARGER). Sigh...........

And you get the point....a MEMORABLE day, but just not how I thought it would go!

Not intending to be a "downer"... but a wild rabbit got hit on the road tonight, just before I came upon it. I thought it would be kind to move it off the road so it wouldn't get into a bigger mess.

I don't have a love affair w/ them since they do so much damage to gardens & the new shoots on the berry bushes. However, as I was walking, a car passed me fairly slowly. I watched as it went a ways down the road & then turned around in a driveway. It proceeded to slowly move back towards me. I thought it would be worth checking to see what they were looking for.

Turns out, that they had just hit said rabbit & wanted to see if it was okay. (Car vs. bunny. Probably not.) -- I then mentioned that I had seen it & moved it off the road. To the dad & daughter, that caused them to think it would be fine. (I said, not very likely, given what I saw.)

However, I thought that their care & concern was heartwarming in a world gone bonkers right now. Nobody was worrying about "space", distance, talking, etc. We had a mutual care for something other than ourselves.

OK, it was yesterday, but I forgot to post.
The parking lot on Hantwick Rd. was nearly full yesterday late morning. Lots of people on the trail including some kids and an adult walking group. I even saw several friends that I havent't seen for a while. The air was fresh and the sunshine felt good.

A nice mid-morning walk. There were only two other people on the trail while I was there, but the weather was nice. The South Fork of the Lewis River is running deep and swift. All of the landings are under water and probably farther down the river than they are supposed to be.

Today I took my usual "long walk" along the Hantwick Trail to Moulton Falls. It was a beautiful day and quite sunny with clear blue sky. Just a half-mile away, it was still foggy and gray.
One my return trip I saw a coyote about 40 yards from me. He/she crossed the path from the river to go up the mountain. It was beautiful to see.
I, also, met several dogs on the trail (before seeing the coyote) along with their owners.

Berry - Your Sunday escape sounds wonderful.
Today we had fog all morning and part of the afternoon, but when it burned off it was a lovely day. I had a doctor's appointment today, so I'll do my "long walk" tomorrow. I hope the fog doesn't come back!

Took the longest walk in months on Saturday! -- My son & his GF took me to Cannon Beach for the day + dinner.
emoticon
We walked the beach for about 3 hrs... over 20K in steps for me! (The painful part was I ended up w/ a blister UNDER a callous. The walking distance back seemed to be never-ending!)

The sun was shining. Not too much wind; lots of people walking, biking, jogging, playing! Kites & pets & kids & people is what I saw + the sand & wave action!

On our way home, @ 6 pm, we saw at least a dozen Roosevelt Elk casually foraging along the side of the road!

The waterfalls on the Moulton Falls Trail are back. They've probably been back for a week or two, but I noticed them today.

Lots of dogs. I went to Burnt Bridge Creek trail. The day was kind of funny - I could see raindrops, but didn't feel them. After a while I felt them, but could not see them.
I saw several people with their dogs. As I was leaving one gentleman was loading his dog, while another lady was unloading hers.

lots of drizzle and quite a few people out enjoying mother nature.
I passed four bicycle riders. Two of them had bright orange sneakers on. You could see them from a quarter mile away!

There is a couple of really nice walking paths along the Deschutes as well! It was time well-spent when we went there w/ the kids!

Just got back from a "girl friends adventure". We went to Bend, OR. and explored the area. We stayed at an air B and B on the edge of the historic area which allowed us to walk all over including the river walk.

On Tues. 9/3, we walked & saw historical landmarks in Walla Walla, WA.
* Fort Walla Walla + cemetery
* the Whitman Mission
* French Town area with a restored original house from that era (mid-late 1800's)

This is a part of the state that I have never traveled to nor explored. It was interesting on several levels.

lot's of people on the Moulton Falls trail! It started with two fellows that I've seen before, who were just finishing their walk as I started. Then there were the two sisters with their prams, a couple out for a nice walk in the woods, the local Volkswalker group, two ladies with their dogs, a jogger, and a young couple. Except for the two fellows that were finishing as I was starting, I met everyone else a second time after they turned around at the end of the trail and I turned around in the middle.
The river is quite low now and the western most falls is just a trickle.

I had a lovely walk today. I went early because I had a late morning appointment. The weather was beautiful. Even though it was in the low 60's, my light sweatshirt was too warm and was pulled off within 15 minutes.
I met several "friends", whom I haven't seen for quite a while. I was fun to catch up.

Only a few people today. I was surprised because it was a sunny and a nice day - not too hot, not too cold.
The river is running well, but is quiet, so that means it is rather low. Well, what do I expect, it's July.

I went to the Mall to do some shopping, but forgot that the stores don't open until 10, so I did "mall walking" today. It was interesting to see which stores were still there (the last time I was at the Mall was Nov/Dec) and all of the new stores. Best of all, it was comfortable - not too hot and not too cold.

My neighbor w/ a 2-yr old mastiff dog weighing over 200 #'s. Yikes!
-- She was looking for a just-neutered cat that had "disappeared". Fortunately, after we were done chatting, her cat appeared just before she went indoors for the evening (@ 8pm). -- The owner was afraid it had gotten into a coyote "food-dish".
With all the construction going on around us, their typical fields to roam are shrinking.

I managed to get my walk in before the rain started. My timing was perfect, the first few drops were starting just as I reached the house.
I had a delightful weekend and really enjoyed the sun and dry weather.

Sunday I saw snow still in our area & heard crunchy ice & gravel along the side of the road (safest place to walk w/ some traction).
I saw 3 young deer in a clearing of trees watching us as we walked.

Saturday was too cold & windy. The wind chill & crazy roads were not the best to be walking in.

The neighbor at the end of the street had her gate smashed into 2 pieces & her car hit at 5:45 am on Friday. (No idea why the person went straight into her place instead of rounding the curve to continue on down the road?!?)

Another neighbor & his wife & newer baby were out with a stroller, walking. (Have to wonder about a baby on a rural road & cars driving w/out speed limits?! No sidewalks; only ditches!) -- I've known the guy since he was about 4 yrs old!

Glad you were prepared! emoticon

For me, the "worst" oops in walking was ending up 3 miles from my car when a downpour arrived. Between the wind & rain, I was definitely freezing and soaked when I finally made it back.

I've certainly paid more attention to what, where & clothing preparation on future outings!

rain! When I started my walk it was a bit misty, but within 5 minutes it started to get serious. Fortunately, I had my rain jacket with me, so I didn't get soaked. I saw quite a few people out on the trail and none of them had rain gear.

...a toxic burn pile. I called it in. I saw the black smoke heading into the sky when I came out my door for a walk. -- Had to walk in the opposite direction, the toxic air/smell was so bad.

I did call it in. The people are "new" into the country & getting ready to build. Might as well learn the "rules" of living out here. (A previous encounter w/ owner caused me to not approach this time.)

lot's of dogs. I think I was the only one on the trail that didn't have a canine companion. I saw some old friends, that I haven't seen for a month or more and met some new folks, who were exploring the trail for the first time. All in all it was a good day - the weather was nice, the river is running quickly and loudly, and plenty of friends to share the path.

I walked the Moulton Falls trail this afternoon and had a great time. I saw a fellow with a full backpack jogging up the trail; he's obviously training for some event/trip. I met a couple of puppies and their owners. I met a fellow who was looking for wild mushrooms. He told me it is late in the season, but that there are still some to be found. I, also, visited with a fellow who asked me about the railroad that goes near the path (it's the Chelatchie Prairie RR and runs excursions from Yacolt to Lucia ( a "block" area just west of the park).

Not too many people out this afternoon. I guess the gray skies scared people off. The trail was very quiet - no wind in the trees, no birds chirping; just the chatter of the river. I only saw one bird today - that's very unusual. I guess they were all hunckered down waiting for the predicted storm.

I had a lovely walk today at Moulton Falls. I saw a coyote crossing the trail ahead of me. I met a friend just before my turnaround point, so we walked together back to our cars. It was delightful to have someone to talk to for half an hour. We traded e-mails and are going to walk Salmon Creek sometime this fall.

I think people tend to follow "habits"?! - Work a little, smoke a little?! Older gentleman...
emoticon emoticon emoticon

Anyway, had a LOVELY walk on the Lacamas Trail today! -- Met a fitness walker, maybe 10 yrs my senior & we chatted up a storm for the first 2 miles. She went on & I came back. 4 miles was my "target" today.
emoticon
But I SAW a tree blown down over the trail. Nobody would be able to ride a bike through (without picking up the bike & lifting it over all the branches). We had to kind of pick our way through it... I'm guessing the wind blew it over yesterday when it was gusting strong around here.

Huge amount of wind gusts in our location today. I couldn't get my vehicle back into my driveway after a corner tree broke across it in 3 directions. What a mess!

Couldn't believe I had to ask a smoker to refrain from smoking in our field (even though it is clearly posted)! The wind we had today + dry conditions = recipe for disastrous fire.

Lots of families enjoying the day.
The East Fork of the Lewis River is so low that it doesn't make noise going through the rapids along the Hantwick Rd. trail.

Last fall I noticed a lot of pink and yellow streamers on some of the trees on the Moulton Falls trail. I thought it might be a surveying exercise for the local JC or High School. I kept forgetting to contact the county to find out about them. Well, now I know.

Yes, I saw it and I am sad. I agree that there are a lot of trees that should come down because they are rotting or already tilted, but I really don't like the idea of clear cutting. It looks like I'll have to find another place to walk next winter. Sigh!

It was a lovely summer Sunday yesterday, so of course there were lots of people. I nearly went to Moulton Falls, but decided not to. We live on one of the two access roads to the park and the road was very busy yesterday.
