Rejj - I am so sorry to hear about your sister. Have they been able to find out what the problem with the heart is?

Irene Ė Iím sorry about your auntís passing. Iím glad that your mom is reacting to the loss as well as can be expected. My family is going through our own challenges. One of my sisters was rushed to the hospital on New Yearís Eve. Sheís been in intensive care for 4 days. Her heart is unstable and theyíre having trouble finding the problem. The lack of personnel because of the holiday didnít help. We are praying and waiting.

Roadtofreedom Ė I agree that so much of the news is negative. I have to be careful of what I watch and read too, or I develop a sense of ďimpending doomĒ thatís not good. I agree with Irene that the SparkPeople site is a positive place to be. But even there, I want to be wise about the time I spend here.

Sunshineg1 Ė I like the Melody Beattie quote. Itís a challenge to find the right balance between having a positive attitude and living in the real world. Then again, getting our mind and soul into a peaceful place can only help. Then we can be part of the solution and not the problem.

No matter how slow you go, you are STILL lapping everybody on the couch.

Rejj - thanks. Unfortunately our day did not start well - we got news that my mothers younger sister in England passed away this morning, I dreaded telling mum the news, but so far she has been okay.

Roadtofreedom - I hear you. Iím trying to use social media less. But I am popping into spark - as I see it as a positive. And my house is full of clutter and many many books. I started decluttering last year - still a long way to go! Will continue this year.

Sunshineg1 -thanks for the Melody Beattie quote. I just retired this year and one of the things I did was join a choir. Itís mostly people my age,and older. The oldest member is 91 - and has become my new role model. She is welcoming every time I come, she is overflowing with joy, smiles a lot and is grateful for the smallest things. Her name is Joyce - which I think appropriate, I think of her as Joy. As I said, my new role model.

Have you had the opportunity to read a quote from Melody Beattie.

Itís so easy to look around and notice whatís wrong. It takes practice to see whatís right.
Many of us have lived around negativity for years.
Weíve become skilled at labelling whatís wrong with other people, our life, our work, our day, our relationships, ourselves, our conduct, our recoveryÖThe purpose of negativity is usually annihilation.
Negative thinking empowers the problem. It takes us out of harmony.
Negative energy sabotages and destroys. It has a powerful life of its own.
So does positive energy.
Each day, we can ask whatís right, whatís good about other people, our life, our work, our day, our relationships, ourselves, our conduct, our recovery.
Positive energy heals, conducts love, and transforms. Choose positive energy.

Today, God help me let go of negativity. Transform my beliefs and thinking, at the core, from negative to positive. Put me in harmony with the good.

I think that you make a good point, Verna, about using computer time wisely.

There are days when I spend too much time reading sites like Twitter, reading news stories. All that happens is that I get upset about things that I can't control. I don't post there much, I just read.

Reading social media sites affects me negatively, I know that. Lots of negative emotions are stirred up.

We also have tons of stuff around our house that needs to be cleared out. I know that I would feel better if I did that. There are closets full of clothes that I never wear, "collectables", craft supplies that I need to sell or donate, lots of stuff. My kitchen cupboards need a good organising. Books. We are both book hoarders.

No wonder my emotions are cluttered.

I wish a good day to you all.

I'm so glad that your time with your father went well, Irene! As for the extra pounds you may have picked up, you can get rid of them when you get back home. But you'll always keep the irreplaceable memories you made!

Thanks, that was akind thing to say Rejj.

Like both of you, Rejj and Verna, I plan to spend more time offline. Thatís why I am a ďminimalistĒ leader here. Having said that, I hope you two donít disappear. I always enjoy seeing you here. And need encouragement.

I have eaten up a storm here and am nervous about weighing in when I get home. Just a few more days to go.

We had a birthday brunch for my fatherís 90th birthday today at a really nice restaurant. It went really well, and some came back to visit at their home after. Mission accomplished!

Like Verna, I want to spend less time on the computer in the coming year. Sitting in front of a computer screen is not the best way to lose excess weight. Still, I enjoy giving and receiving encouragement on our team, So I plan to use my computer time wisely. One of my other resolutions for 2019 is to spend more time interacting with people. I tend to isolate.

I also plan to be more active. For the first time this winter, I went for a walk by the lake with my niece wearing my new traction cleats. It was icy, but with the ice cleats, everything went well. I was worn out but happy when I got home. My sister told me that we burn a lot more calories when we walk in ice and snow because of the energy expended keeping our balance. I believe her!

I wish you success in attaining your health goals in the coming year!

Hi everyone!!!

Whew made it through Christmas celebrations, all the food and wine and the shock of the numbers on the scale!!! Now for New Years Eve and Day---We have absolutely no plans and it's stormy today, The snow and wind has been coming and going since midnight and is forecasted to to continue all day tomorrow and tomorrow night. DH and I might be spending NYE and Day all to ourselves. (Hope there are movies to watch but failing that there will be Football!! As long as we are healthy and happy that's all that matters at the end of the day.

Looks like most are having very busy days, travelling, eating, wining (not whining) I am making NY Resolutions to spend less time on the computer and more time being active. My plan is to start spring cleaning early, like on Jan 2 so when spring does arrive I will be ready to spend time outdoors knowing the inside is sparkling and a lot of those so called collectibles gone. I guess we all do it, keep buying "STUFF" and then what, well, storing it that's what. I did a major cleanup outside and downstairs a couple years ago and now the rest of the house needs it. I'd like to get some painting done as well so guess what------ I'll be spending even less time here than I did this past year but to be sure, I will be dropping in now and again to see what's happening in everyone's life and reporting on mine now and again.

Have a Happy New Year folks and may 2019 be the best year yet.

Hi Irene: Why am I not surprised that you're the kind of person a friend would drive 3 hours to meet for dinner! I'm glad that you're enjoying your time in Hamilton, with your parents and friends. Those are occasions when we indulge a bit more. The problem comes when those "special occasions" become a way of life, which I know is not your case. I think that we'll all be kinda glad to get back to our regular health routines after the holiday parties and visits are over. And you'll have a brand new fitbit to encourage you! Wow! I'm anxious to know how you like it. (I like fitness gadgets.)

I hope that you enjoy the rest of your trip and that your cold gets better quickly!

Irene, hope that you'll have lots of fine weather to get some walking in.

It's snowing today. So far it's just a light fine snow. The birdies are eating and I'm drinking my coffee and watching the chickadees.

Cheers to all.

So we are out in Hamilton - seeing my mum and dad each day, but not for too long each day as I donít want to upset their schedule, and tire them out. Weíve taken them out for a few lunches - better they have dinner and meds at their retirement home. We are also seeing a few old friends. Had dinner out one night with a friend who drove 3 hours for the dinner. Feel so blessed. Are seeing some other friends tonight for dinner.

Itís lovely, but what this adds up to is - very little exercise and lots of eating out. I am sure my weight is soaring. Also I am fighting getting a cold. I cannot get a cold - cannot pass anything on to my parents. But there is something in my nose (I tend to pick up stuff on the plane coming out here). One day I sneezed a few times and had a runny nose in the evening. With oil,of oregano and rest I seem to be holding it off - but this also means that I am resting and not charging outside for walks.

With my newfitb ( a Christmas/birthday present) I can see how few steps I am doing. :-(

Also I am super tired.

Oh well. A new year looms.

Have a great end of your year everyone.

Irene

A quiet Christmas. Just the two of us. Two old hermits.

We made a small turkey with yams and other vegetables. I made a slow cooker stuffing loaf and a Saskatoon berry crisp for dessert.

Movies and books and lots of conversation.

A good time. Low stress. Peaceful.

I wish you all peace, joy, and good health as 2019 approaches.

Thanks for the warm hug from B.C., Irene. It was encouraging! I also got a virtual hug from my son, who's in B.C. for the holidays, but I admit that I'm looking forward to a real, live mommy-hug from him!

I hope that you've succeeded in having your turkey dinner by now! LOL Your story reminded me of the first time I invited my brother and sister-in-law over for Thanksgiving dinner shortly after my wedding. I had put the turkey in the oven early, but having misread the directions, the heat was not nearly high enough. My sister-in-law helped me prepare something else because we did NOT have turkey for dinner! emoticon I hope that you're enjoying your visit with your mom and dad!

Verna: I'm familiar with the love/hate cycle that you mention in your blog. It seems to have a momentum of its own. We need to make the important, smart choices that we need to in order to get out of the vicious cycle and back into a good cycle! emoticon

On Christmas, I had a really nice time at my sister's house with our parents and her family. My biggest holiday get-together will be tomorrow night, with the extended family. emoticon

Well I got through December going to many potluck dinners. But managed to have NO Christmas dinner. Our son hosted Christmas dinner and planned it for Christmas Eve as we were travelling to see my parents on Christmas Day (by plane, across Canada). However, the best laid plans....... his wife is older than him, so they have 4 older children and two of them have kids now - so all were at their house (some overnight), plus my DILs brother who is in recovery. There was lots of finger food all day - but due to many circumstances the turkey was not cooked. And there was some drama, due to the brother in recovery. It all worked out, but not the best day.

Christmas morning we were there for gift opening and secret Santa, but then we had to go to airport, so no Christmas dinner. My Christmas dinner was a cheese sandwich and a bunch of granola bars. (Can you hear the violins playing?)

Anyway, now we are in Ontario. We see my parents later on today. And will have dinner with them in their retirement home (due to their med schedule we will take them out for Some lunches, but not dinners.) but tomorrow we are determined to find some place where we can have a turkey dinner - DH and I are really missing it!

I hope everyone elseís Christmas was a little less ďexciting.Ē

We are here now, because my father turns 90 on New Yearís Day. We flew on Christmas Day because quite frankly flying In Canada is expensive and it is a little less on Christmas Day than the days around it.

Interesting note though - on the airplane on the way here, a passenger was allowed the intercom and he proposed to his girlfriend. Then he walked down the aisle and went on bended knee and presented her with the ring. The whole plane applauded.

Have a good day everyone!

Irene

Hi gals,

The other night I was sitting in my chair feeling tired, stressed and sorry for myself and suddenly realized that when that scale goes upward and I continue to overeat in spite of my knowing what I'm doing to myself I, at the same time, thoroughly dislike myself. If all is going well and I'm looking after myself and what I eat, I like myself and I don't overeat, therefore life is good and I have no trouble keeping on track and losing weight. I keep revolving through these cycles of love hate!! As my first DH used to say "I just can't stand prosperity" so likely being "chubby" isn't simply a matter of eating too much it goes deeper than that.

Christmas can indeed be a very stressful time of year with so much to do, so many people to visit or entertain those who are visiting and all that darn cooking, baking and eating . . . . I am very glad Christmas Day is done!! And yet I have so much to be thankful for. Tonight I am totally exhausted, my back and feet are sore as are other parts of my anatomy but I am healthy, able to stand on my own two feet and walk and Lord knows I am able to use my hands to prepare my own food and feed myself.

Tomorrow is a new day and I shall put my best foot forward and try to remember all that I have to be thankful for and mostly I shall try to be nice to me. I will get through this and I will get back on track. If I can do it, so can you!!

Rejj I canít sleep so I read this. You are not alone - we are here for you.

And donít worry about the ďnormalĒ ones of us - I donít think there is normal. And most of us have not accomplished what you have done, look what you have lost - that is amazing. And many of us - me included - struggle with emotional eating.

Christmas can be a happy time but it is also the most stressful time of the year. Donít beat yourself up for feeling that stress.

Iím sending you a big hug from BC. emoticon

I think that I need to talk about my own emotional eating these last three days, especially in the evenings. I've really been off track and it scares me. I'm trying to analyze what's happening. I think that I miss my son more than I realize. Because he lives out West, I don't see him often, and Christmas makes the loneliness even worse. (He and his wife have gone to her parents' home for the holidays.) Also, the short days of Winter have always affected me, plus the freezing weather and icy roads. I miss my morning walks by the lake. I feel lonely, sad and stressed. What's maddening, is that I KNOW that overeating is not the solution! It makes me feel worse, not better.

Also, I'm at a dangerous weight. What's that? At my highest weight, I was 243. Then I "settled" around 200. Now I'm in the 150's. The weight just isn't coming off like it used to. I've been on the awful roller coaster between 160 and 200 before and I do NOT want to do it again! I want to control my weight like the "normal" people on this team do. I'm hoping that this admission will serve as a bright warning line to myself so that I can quickly get back on track with the healthy eating I've been doing for the last couple years (in spite of the two holiday dinners coming up this week).

I'm sorry that you're going through a stressful period right now. You've been cooking for people, and visiting sick friends, and your Facebook account has been hacked. That's a lot! Stress makes it hard to stay focused on our important health and weight goals. I hope that you'll be able to get your emotional eating under control quickly. I wish I could suggest things to do, but I'm an emotional eater too, so I know how difficult it can be when we're stuck in that mode. I hope that you'll get back to your healthy choices very soon! emoticon

I never realized how much of an emotional eater I am until this past week or so. Holy it's unreal and unfortunately the pounds are coming on fast and furious which leads to more eating and round and round it goes. Been a little stressful around here lately is all I can say!!

Rejj - I know what you mean, I am a big time introvert, so becoming a recluse could happen easily. I think itís why I signed up for activities when I retired - tai chi and the choir. And yes, the choir goes all year long. Itís mostly women older than me - but there is one other close in age! :-)

Yup, and I love to read too. Again, have to get myself out of the chair to go on the treadmill.

I went shopping today and I'm finding that I experience more social anxiety as I get older. It just seems that the world is going faster and faster, and that I'm getting slower and slower. I feel I don't fit in anymore. I have to be careful, because I think I could easily become a recluse. emoticon

Verna - I understand where you're coming from when you say you love reading. So do I. I can just lose myself in a book. I love them TOO much; I have to be careful not to sit and read when I should be doing something else... like going for a walk. It sounds like you've been really busy working and cooking for the holidays and being a blessing to others. It important to take care of our health so that we can CONTINUE to be a blessing to those we love!

Irene - I hope that you continue to enjoy singing with your elderly friends. Is this choir a Christmas event, or does it last all year long? I wish you well, my friend!

I haven't been going out and walking very much, but I do try to hop unto my stationary bike when I watch a YouTube video or something. Every little bit helps.

Verna so nice that you are doing all that cooking and baking to share. Glad that you were able to get that car started and the fix will be under warantee.

Verna and Rejj - I donít think DH was trying to sabotage me after all. Sabotage himself maybe - as he doesnít need all those calories either! His plans were to eat some and freeze the rest. His back had been really bothering him for the last little while and I think it was comfort food for him.

Well, gym class done, car back home, lunch in my tummy, heading to kitchen to get stew into the insta pot (only I have an old fashioned pressure cooker!!!) ground beef thawed to make meat loaves for friend tomorrow, sis in law, and one for us. Pineapple squares got a little overbaked last night but DH says they are very good so those need to be cut and frozen, ready to give away!!!

Have a great day all. I'm off to the kitchen!!

Gee have I really been away that long without posting??? Well, maybe that's because life is a little boring lately and I've been burying myself in books. Love to read. I kind of fall into a book and become part of the story it seems!!! Crazy I know.

I have been doing a little baking and squirreling it away in the freezer. You know out of sight out of mind or however that story goes. Sometimes it actually works. I made a butterscotch/peanutbutter square and christmas wreaths this afternoon and as soon as I'm done here I will make some Pineapple Dream Bars. Easy to make and freeze very well. I line all my pans with parchment paper and when they cool I pop the parchment paper/squares onto a cutting board and cut them that way. So much easier than struggling to cut in the pan, besides I seem to always press too hard and mark up my pans. Not good!!

We have a friend who is suffering from COPD and is not doing very well these last few days so DH and I will drive 2.5 hours to see him on Wednesday. His wife and I have been friends for 47 years and have been through many ups and downs in life.

I think I'll take a pot of stew down to them seeing as that's what I'm going to be taking to Bro in law and his wife(who just had cataract surgery on Friday). I'll just make a bit bigger batch and voila. Maybe some fresh buns will be in order as well and oh what the heck some of this baking that I'm doing. Better on their arses than mine Ha ha ha.

Irene, I hate to think your DH is sabotaging your diet but that could well be the case. I know I always feel better if DH has a snack when I do. I've had a tough week staying track and only pray I do better the coming days. So far today pretty good.

On Saturday I went out to my car to drive into town to get a few things and it was stone cold dead. DH and I fought getting the booster cables on and after more than an hour we managed to hook them up and get the car started. The battery is in such an awkward place it was next to impossible to get the cable hooked to the negative post. I even looked in the book to see if there were any hints. But of course not. Anyway I drove it into the dealership and today they advise that the "Power Switch" has a short in it or some such thing. Parts will be here tomorrow. Thank goodness it's covered under warranty. Good thing we have 2 vehicles as I had Avon Orders to deliver today and get some brochures put out.

The weather was absolutely lovely today so that's a good thing. Sunshine, lollipops and ????? Hmm whatever Can't remember the jingle but suffice it to say today was a great day notwithstanding the car thing but even that was great too ---covered by warranty.

Have a great evening and nice day tomorrow folks.

It made me smile to read about your love of singing and participation in the choir. I have no doubt that your choir's Christmas presentations are a blessing to lonely people in those nursing homes. emoticon

Oh what challenges that DH of yours presents you with! Maybe you can bring a couple of those pies to your son's house for Christmas dinner. Congratulations on your determination to stick to plan in spite of the challenges! I think I understand where he's coming from. I have to be so very careful about impulse buying at the grocery store, especially if I'm hungry, tired, or feeling down. A couple of months ago, I impulsively bought a pumpkin pie. Then when I got home, I wondered: "What was I thinking?" emoticon

Also, change always feels a bit threatening and if preparing meals and eating with you is one of the ways your DH gives and receives love, he might (subconsciously) feel he'll lose something if you change your way of eating. Whatever the case may be, keep making the best possible choices for your health and well-being! Better to overstock the freezer than to overstuff your precious body! emoticon

Rejj that book sounds really good. Be interested to hear more about it.

Verna, I too hope you enjoyed that spa bath experience.

No more crafts fairs Rejj. But Iíve been doing lots of Christmas singing. Iím not a great singer, but I LOVE to sing, and I found a seniors choir that would have me. They are QUITE senior, but thatís ok - they are still pretty good. There are enough of them that my voice can get lost in the crowd. We practice one day and perform at a nursing home the next (there are lots of nursing homes to go to). I am really enjoying it. And of course itís all Christmas songs this month!

So I have survived the potlucks (2 this week, 2 next) - Rejj a lot of these are related to my church. We go to the United Church, and I swear it is held together by potlucks.

I have really altered the way I eat. Part of that is lower carb eating. And I feel like DH is (probably unconsciously) trying to sabotage me. He was at a meeting last night and went to the grocery store on the way home. He brought home THREE pies. Nice looking pies. There are TWO of us here. We do not have a lot of visitors. Our son is hosting Christmas. What IS he thinking of?

Well I guess he will have a lot of pie to eat (and trust me he doesnít need to) as I will be eating very little of it. I have not totally cut sweet things, but have really moderated my intake, and oddly enough I have adapted. I am not feeling deprived. BUT WHAT WAS HE THINKING? He also brought home a big bag of small white butter buns - which he knows I like. He KNOWS I am cutting back on carbs. All I can think of that he was really hungry when he hit the grocery store. He put the pies in the overstocked fridge (he overstocks everything) - and there was so little room, he stuffed one In the vegetable drawer!

Hi Irene: Knowing your love for Christmas craft fairs, I couldn't help but think of you yesterday when my sister gave me a beautiful, personally hand-crafted Christmas decoration for my home. Have you been able to get out to any craft fairs lately? How are you doing in getting your 10,000 steps in?

Hi Verna: I hope that you thoroughly enjoyed your spa bath experience. It sounded wonderful!

As for me, I'm currently reading The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. It was recommended to me by my sister. It's an interesting, informative book that explains how the smallest, seemingly insignificant decisions we make impact the trajectory of our lives. I'll probably write about it at some point. emoticon

Let's make the best choices we possibly can during this holiday season, while we gratefully enjoy meals with our family and friends! emoticon

Got my flu shot today after working out at the gym so now my arm is bothering me. DH is off to town to get us some Kentucky Duck for dinner and I just finished making a kale/cabbage coleslaw.

After I fill my face I shall have a nice hot bath with epsom salts and will light a scented candle right now and close the bathroom door so I can inhale my most favourite smell ---balsam pine.

"fat and sassy" ? emoticon I would add "and witty". I'm not very witty, but my sister (walking partner) is. I enjoy her company so very much. It's unbelievable the things she comes up with. LOL!

I hope you enjoyed the movie. Bravo to you for getting your exercise in before leaving!

We're dealing with freezing rain here today. I don't know if I'll be going out but if I do, I'm glad I finally bought those traction cleats.

Rej I haven't ridden for a long time. Jigs the quarter horse is the only one I would ride and he's as fat and sassy as I am!!! The rest are thoroughbreds and I definitely wouldn't get on their backs even if I was 30 years younger!!! Way too fast a pace for me I'm afraid!!!

Dull day today but at least my spirits aren't dampened by the coolness in the air. Not cold, just cool compared to what is expected to come. Only -10 and no wind, a few tiny flakes coming down nothing serious.

Have a wonderful day folks. DH and I are going to take in a movie today and I need to finish up exercising. Just a few spins on the exercise bike will do it!!!

As a retired secretary who sat in front of a computer for almost 8 hrs per day, I'm impressed with the amount of movement and exercise you get, Verna. Movement is so important, even if it's not formally "exercise". Going to the gym is an added bonus! I would need to do exercises for strength. I'm noticing a loss of strength as I grow older. (I like to go for walks, but that doesn't necessarily build strength.) Bravo to you for the disciplined care of your body!

I would guess that you do some horseback riding too. That's a pretty good exercise! And enjoyable. emoticon

Hi ladies

Actually looking after the horses isn't such a great amount of exercise ladies. DH is back on board now, the wrist seems to be ok although a little painful at times so he is doing the feeding these days. I was out there on Tuesday all afternoon, helping load heifers for the sale on Wednesday. It was a fantastic day so sunny and warm it was hard to go back indoors but I forced myself!!!

I try to do exercise classes 3 days a week which is great because there are several of us regulars and the classes become fun with lots of laughs at times. If I should miss a day of classes I try to get into town and hit the machine/weight room. Some days it's a chore but for the most part it's ok. Can't say I like to exercise. You know how some people claim they get a high after running or exercise? Nope not me, I do it because I want to feel good and be strong. End of story.

I've thought of buying a small car but with our rural living and the snow we sometimes get I feel safer in my Ford Edge which is all wheel drive and can go through a lot of snow.

Sorry to hear the grandkids don't want to accompany you in your small non air conditioned car Irene!! But let's see what happens when they NEED a ride somewhere. LOL

Well, I think it's bed time for me. Haven't been sleeping well for the past couple of weeks so am hoping tonight will be different for a change.

Wonderful that your place is finished now Rejj! Snow storm days - great days to stay home when you are retired. Too bad there is that problem of moving the car for the snow plow. I agree, wish it was that easy to reduce our weight too!

Verna, I agree with Rejj - amazing that you ALSO go to the gym when you get so much exercise on a daily basis on the farm. You are amazing.

And Verna - donít worry, I am taking the car out in traffic - Iíve been doing errands every day. But I am still not happy driving - still donít trust anyone on the road. Itís good to be careful, but there is a happy medium - and Iím not there yet!

The car I got is what I call the no bells and whistles version. I wonít be driving far in it - just tootling around town and the two towns right next door. So I donít think I need all the options - which add a lot to the bill. Remember, this is a car I had NOT planned on buying. I went for reliability - so new - but as inexpensive as I could get. This includes no fob, and no heated seats and no air conditioning, my 12 and 13 year old grandkids were shocked to hear of a car with no air conditioning - they didnít know they existed! And have declared that they will not ride with me in the summer! :-(

All the work is done. The ladders, sanders, paint brushes and sheets, as well as a multitude of other tools and stuff have been removed from the apartment. My sister helped me clean up and now all that's left is for me to enjoy my lovely apartment. emoticon

Big snow storm today and tomorrow. The problem with small cars is that they're not very heavy, and sometimes it's a challenge to back them out for the snow plow to pass through. I plan to put some sandbags in my trunk to add a bit of weight to my car. (Wish it was as easy to subtract a bit of weight from my butt!)

It's easy to understand why your foals might be a little jittery. I hope they will settle down quickly and that there won't be any long-term problems. I was surprised to read that you go to the gym. I thought that you had a "gym" right in your own backyard with all the work you have to do. But good for you!

Let's keep making those healthy choices so that we can continue doing the things we love to do!

Made it through the day. Worked hard cleaning and clearing this morning then had snacks to prepare for the Grey Cup and then dinner. Company has come and gone and I'll be to bed at a reasonable hour tonight. Tomorrow is Monday already and back to the gym. Having company from Prince Edward Island tomorrow as well so it's going to be a busy day again.

Hope everyone is well and had a lovely weekend and will have a nice upcoming week.

Irene, I hope you get over your driving jitters easily. Maybe a drive around the block before heading out into traffic will settle the nerves a bit.

Your little cars sound lovely Rejj and Irene.

My youngsters (Spring foals) are standoffish right now because the surgery to remove their "jingles" has made them leary. It will take some time for them to calm down, I may have to start that in another pen that they don't relate the surgery to and gain their confidence back that way. Who knows, might work but then again they were taken out of their pens to have the surgery. My Rowdy and Newfy never reacted that way but these guys aren't as attached to me!!

Lovely sunny day out there today with the new 5 or 6 inches of snow. Had a nice time playing with and/or talking to each of the horses this morning.

Must run, need to get a few groceries for tomorrow (things I can eat like celery and lettuce!!) Made meatballs last night which I broiled and it's our own ground beef so there isn't much fat in them. I think I'll have enough with what's here to munch on!! Have a great day everyone and do take care.

To the little old lady in tennis shoes: I'm glad that you now have wheels again. They can be pretty handy at times. I hope that you adapt quickly to driving again. It's so scary when something happens that is out of one's control, but accidents are the exception, not the norm. I hope that you like your little subcompact as much as I like my little Echo. It's so economical that I sometimes wonder if I got an experimental model!

I didn't realize it was the Grey cup weekend either. I hope we don't get kicked off the Canada 50+ Ladies Club! emoticon

'Itís Grey cup this weekend? Just shows you how much DH and I are not into sports. (Hangs head in shame. So un Canadian).

Rejj - so wonderful that the painting is done, and that you love your home - so important.

Verna - those horses are beautiful! But I cannot imagine having the boundless energy you must have to look after them.

As for me - my car-less days, which started at the end of September when someone drove through a red light and disposed of my last car, are over. Two days ago I got a new car - and it is new, but I went bargain basement new. Itís very small, and I got no bells and whistles. So it is a Mitsubishi Mirage (subcompact) and NO extras - no AC, even no fob, but I am fine with that. DH also has a car, with all the bells and whistles, and any distance driving we do will be in it. My car literally will be the car of the ďlittle old lady in tennis shoes.Ē emoticon

Now I just have to get up my driving nerve again. The accident really did rock me.

Anyway, have a great day everyone! Irene

A new paint job always makes me feel great --- especially if I apply my crack filler first Ba hahaha

Seriously Rejj, I'm sure you are loving your apartment. Makes a place so much more "yours" when you redecorate or paint. I'm envious but not of all the work involved. My kitchen needs painting but I just haven't gotten up the energy to do it just yet!!!!

Hope the rest of this team is doing well and keeping happy and busy.

Grey Cup this weekend and we always have guests so I guess I'd better put my thinking cap on for munchies and dinner. Hmmm (Salad for sure!!!!)

Rej this is Rowdy a year ago. You decide is he "earned" his name. This was taken about 2 days after he was weaned from his mamma.

Hope everyone is having a great day. Sunny here with a slight chill in the air but overall a wonderful day.

Thatís a very heartwarming story about Newfy. Itís wonderful that he has such a great new home, new friend, and caring master. Itís true that looking at him now, itís hard to believe that he was ever sad and shaggy!

When I read the name Rowdy, I was wondering if he ďearnedĒ his name. LOL! Iím glad that heís got a new best friend, even if he thinks his former ďfriendĒ walks on water.

Iíve read that itís amazing what those strong, intelligent, loyal and courageous animals will do for a master who loves them and whom they love.

This is Crimson Code and his barn name is Newfy. We bought him in January and he truly looked like one of those Newfoundland Ponies. Small, shaggy and sad looking. His Owner passed and his wife was having a tough time coping with her husband's death and maybe financially as well or maybe she was just too depressed to give her animals proper care. Who Knows. Crimson Code was also by himself in a pen and as a rule horses, especially foals, don't do well on their own. So we bought him and put him with Now Boarding (Rowdy) who was very close to the same age and they loved each other's company. Newfy ate like a king and grew like a weed. He is so shiny and beautiful now it's hard to believe he was once was a shaggy little foal!! He thinks I walk on water, as does Rowdy.

This is Rowdy. He was born here last March (2017) and spent a couple of months in a pen alone here as we didn't have another foal to put in the pen with him, until Newfy of course!! BUT I spent many hours with Rowdy and he thought I was his playmate!! These are my two favourites. I have great hopes for them.

So that's it folks. I'm off to make lunch now and then we are going to visit our cousins who live 20 minutes away.

Have a great day everyone.

What beautiful horses you have, Verna, and fast too! emoticon This morning, I was wondering if horses give hugs to strangers. After reflection, I realized that they probably have different personalities. Then I read your post, and you answered my question. Your posts make me smile as I learn more about those magnificent creatures!

I'm glad you're doing well with your weight. Those kale salad packages make a healthy meal so easy and delicious. Yum! Yum!

Are you getting out for walks in spite of the cold, Irene? Have you gotten any news from your insurance company regarding the accident? I hope you are doing well!

Only two walls left needing a 2nd coat, then the moldings. I wish those beautiful wood moldings had never been painted! But since they were, we're repainting them. It would just be too much work to strip off all the paint, since I live in a rented apartment. I love how the paint has brightened up the place! I'm so very, very grateful for the help I am getting, the results of which I'll be enjoying for a long time to come, God willing.

Let's all make healthy choices as we move into the holiday season!

U Liftmeofmyfeet and one of the grooms. She won this race. She doesn't give hugs though. More interested in what's in our pockets for a treat. The track always give them peppermints so they are always searching!! I don't bother with the peppermints because once they are in a large corral they are more standoffish and love to act up!! They do talk to us when we go out to give them their grain and they LOVE the mineral/molasses tubs to lick on.

Heading into Calgary to pick up a few things and then meet up with DH's cousins for dinner. I can see chicken tenders and salad will more than likely be my dinner as I'm off carbs and sugar for a bit anyway. See how long I last. The weight is coming off so makes it worth the effort. I love those 7 Super Food kale packages. I just add some protein to the salad and voila lunch and/or dinner or both with a variation of protein.

Hope everyone is doing well and having a great day.

We are currently painting my apartment. The task had been put off by one of my sisters who got a long visit from her grandsons "who wanted to go and spend the week at grandma's". One benefit of that delay is that hunting season is now over and my brother-in-law is also here painting. Yesterday, they did the primer and first coat of paint. Today, they'd like to finish the second coat of paint, and Wednesday, paint and install the moldings. Having to prepare food for these wonderful people has reminded me of the challenges of eating with others. My sisters are both glad to eat nutritarian with me but my bil is not the same things. He even asked for chips. I went out and purchased food I don't normally keep in the house. I felt so guilty feeding him that junk! It's a challenge for my sister, who would also like to eat healthy to be married to someone who loves rich food. It reminded me of how much easier it is for me to control my environment because I live alone. There are a lot of other challenges that come with living alone, but that's not one of them. emoticon

Prized Dream and her son Prized Gold taken in August this year. They live in adjoining pens now as Prized Dream needs a break before spring arrives and with that a sibling for Prized Gold--or more than likely a half sibling!!

Hope everyone is having a great day. Warm and Sunny in our world today.

There are so many beautiful things to look at at a craft fair! Plus, you do get some movement in, though not very fast steps. Do you personally make craft items, Irene?

My sister has motivated me to go out for long walks yesterday and today. The weather is relatively mild (0 and -4; not windy). I enjoyed my walks a lot, except that I almost slipped today. I did have walking sticks but I'm going to have to get studs for under my boots. Here is a photo from yesterday's walk.

So true Rejj! Who knew we would learn about horses on SparkPeople? Nice that your sister is determined to get you out for winter walks.

As for me, I was at my first Christmas craft fair today. Even if I didnít buy much - I just love going to these fairs. And this one is always a good one. A friend and I have been going for years.

I had never thought of horses as giving hugs before reading Vera's post. I've been reflecting on it ever since. It's an interesting thought. I wish I knew more about horses, I know so little about them. Imagine learning about horses on Sparkpeople! LOL

My sister is intent on getting me to walk in the Winter so she's been suggesting I purchase some thermal underwear. Yesterday, at Costco, I saw some Merino Blend longjohns. (She had told me to get something with Merino wool.) But they only went up to a size XL. I buy XXL. I bought them anyway, just in case. And they fit! emoticon That means I can now buy clothes in regular stores. emoticon I find them so comfortable that I plan to buy another pair. I got this pair all wet when I went to clean the snow off my car this morning. We've got a snowfall warning in effect here today: 15 to 25 cm. I'm grateful for snowplows... and wool longjohns.

Not sure I get so much exercise Irene but I do get lots of enjoyment and hugs on a good day. The youngsters haven't caught on to hugging yet but Rowdy sure has. Mind you he has always been a loving kind of guy.

So glad your folks got to a Remembrance service. I suspect that was a wonderful experience for them.

Have a great day tomorrow everyone.

You must get so much exercise outdoors with those beautiful horses!

I am so happy - yesterday both my parents went to a Remembrance Day service at their retirement home. They havenít been able to do anything like this for years.

Remembering those who fought for our country. I wish those with the supposed powers do not totally ruin out country with their poor leadership, spending money like it was water with no thought of who will be stuck paying it and how it can possibly be paid back. If those that fought knew what would become would they have fought and given their lives---I wonder.

Well, today is today and I for one am going to have a good day and make the very best of it and be kind and gentle to every one I see today and give them my smile in the hope of making their day good too.

HEY Mr. Fix It got here yesterday morning and got the frozen waterer back working. Desi found the cord and gave it a tug I guess and that's all it took. Funny how horses pull on things. A week or so ago I got too warm doing chores so took off my jacket and hung it on the fence. Being the forgetful person I am, I left it there and before I got back to the pen Desi had almost torn one of the sleeves off. Seeing as it was an old jacket I just tied it to the fence and she, as well as the 2 that have come back from the track love to pull on it and flip it to and fro. Desi is now in the same pen as Glitter and "Feet" and they are slowly getting used to each other. They chase and tease. Have to get the pecking order straightened out among themselves but in the meantime they are getting lots of exercise, sometimes in fun, sometimes not so much!! Desi is now learning what it's like to be on the other end of the stick so to speak. She was not nice to Rowdy when they were allowed to romp around together so I don't feel sorry for her. Rowdy btw is healing nicely. I still put ointment on his ouchies but now I deeply massage it in and he does enjoy that!!. He only has one ouchy that still needs a little time.

I spent time outside with the horses today while DH cleaned one of the pens then came indoors and cleaned house. Just had dinner and am now enjoying that wine!!

Have a lovely evening all.

Verna - wow is that cold! Glad that you are able to put a positive spin on this. Also that you are - slowly- getting better.

Rejj - yes, Anise was way too young - it was a very rare, rapidly advancing, cancer. Her last 45 days were only so good because of the love and devotion of my son and wife.

Yes Rejj, I know many would envy me that cooking husband. He is not a gourmet cook - but he is a creative one - which sometimes leads to some interesting food combinations! But he does try to cook in a healthy manner. The problem is not my appetite - it is that the food tends to be carb heavy and I am trying to eat lower carbs. Also, he tends to load up my plate and then is insulted if I donít eat it all. However we have been talking about this, and he is moderating a bit

I see from the emoticon posts that TB had snow! And you have frozen water Verna. We have had pretty nice weather all week - sunny and not too cold - but today the rains have arrived.

Have a great day everyone!

Frozen waterer this morning and Mr. Fix It says he won't be able to get here for a couple of days so that means breaking ice every morning and afternoon. Could be worse, could be 5 pens without water instead of 1. Always something to be thankful for if we just look.

Hope everyone has a lovely Friday.

Hi ladies

Switched the horses up a bit this morning. The spring foals, Gold Dreamer (Gold) and Patrick's Code (Cody) have an additional pen, only so it's easier for me to feed as I am having trouble with opening the gate due to sore shoulders still. They followed me right into their new pen, only because I was carrying a pail of oats and when I dumped it into their buckets they took right to eating!! Another reason they had to be moved was for their ease of eating from pails tied to a fence as Gold kept pawing the oats out of the tubs. Not a good thing when mineral is so expensive and he's pawing it into the dirt. Brat. Guess I fixed his red wagon!!

Nice out there today, sun is shining, no wind. Woo Hoo

Have a wonderful day everyone.

P.S. Do I HAVE to work on the books today????

Irene: I was chatting with my son the other day as he was preparing supper for his wife. It made me think that you said that your husband prepares supper for you. I think that a few of us could be jealous of that kind of service! I can also see where that could be a challenge if he's a good cook. A bit like going to a restaurant every night. As delicious as it might be, you're not the one who controls what goes into the food. I was wondering if having a fresh salad before the meal or eating more vegetables would be a way to curb your appetite so that you don't eat as much of the main meal. It's going to take wisdom to navigate your blessings!

Hi Verna, I don't think I hate the time change as much as you do, but I do think they take some adapting to. I find the Fall and Winter difficult seasons because of the short days. I don't like to drive at night. I think I have a solar-powered battery and the energy runs low when there's not enough sunlight to recharge it. I have to be careful not to let that keep me from getting adequate movement during Winter though! From reading your posts, I get the impression that a lot of movement is automatically built into your day.

Going to hockey games - what love won't make us do! emoticon

I'm glad to see you're feeling better! And that you still love that naughty little foal. LOL!

Change of clocks last night. It felt like we were in bed for hours and it still was only 8 a.m. Today will be one of those days that drag along and then bang, it's dark. Hate this time change. Hate it, hate it, hate it. But hey, things could be alot worse.

The plan is to watch one of the grandson's play hockey at 6 p.m. I don't care for hockey but will go along anyway.

Well, time to go out to get those horses fed and the whispering in their ears done. Yeah, I still love the foals, even the one that got the best of me a week ago. Still have a sore head but the headaches aren't bad anymore. Tolerable without meds of any kind.

Have a great "Slow Time" Sunday everyone!!! emoticon

Irene, I'm sad to read that you've lost Anise. You had written about her before, but I didn't realize that she was so young. She looks happy and proud in that photo, being loved up on by you. I'm sorry for your family's loss! I know how very attached we become to our furry friends. I'm glad she didn't suffer, and that she had such a good home and so much love during her much too short life. emoticon

Rejj, I agree with Irene, your apartment does sound lovely. Lots of work but well worth it in the end.

Irene so sorry about Anise. She was far to young to go over the rainbow bridge, let's be happy for her in her new home. She is likely running around with her tongue lolling out the side of her mouth, her eyes sparkling like diamonds. She was a gorgeous puppy and your "kids" had a little fur baby to love with all their hearts for a while oh and you did too. So happy she had good moments every day.

Rejj - your apartment sounds wonderful. And what great help you have!

A sad not from me. Today was the last day for our lovely grand dog Anise. She was only 3 years old, but 45 days ago was diagnosed with an inoperable, rare cancer. The vet gave her a week, but thanks to much love and a lot of medications and a doggie wheelchair/chariot she survived for 45 days post diagnosis. She slept a lot, but she was not in pain, and she had good moments every day. My son and daughter in law are devastated. But they have been so good to her. They are in Calgary, so the last time I saw Anise was at Thanksgiving. My heart is a little broken today.

I've been quite busy with renovations in my new apartment. (I moved here last June. It's in an old, almost centenarian Victorian-style house.) I'm so blessed to have some GREAT help from two sisters and a niece. One of my sisters has been coming over to plaster the walls. We'll be repainting the walls soon (hopefully this week). Then we'll have a party!

Verna: I'm sorry you were hurt when working with that foal. I'm always surprised to read how physically difficult your work is! You seem to be very physically active just by the demands of your work. I hope that you will heal well and quickly! Yeah Glitter!

Irene: I hope that you are doing well. We don't have any snow accumulations yet here in Southern Quebec. We've had some cold days, with a few flurries, but no accumulations so we don't need boots yet. I went for a short, but delightful walk with my sister yesterday. I need to remember how pleasant it is to walk in the crisp Autumn air!

Hi gals

I did have that epsom salts bath, slept well and didn't feel too bad yesterday but this morning was an altogether different story. I didn't sleep well last night due to not being able to get comfortable and this morning I was not doing too good at all. DH rubbed some liniment on my shoulders and back and then we were off to the races to watch Glitter run a fantastic race and Feet ran as well but not quite as spectacularly as Glitter did. A few tylenol and aspirin got me through the day and evening so it's all good. Still pain between my shoulder blades and tops of my shoulders but I trust a tylenol will help me get a good night sleep.

That's all my cheer so on that note, I'm going to bed. Have a lovely Monday everyone

Verna, are YOU okay after that incident? I hope so.

Rejj, I tend to hibernate in the winter too. But I have no excuse. I have a treadmill at home. But I should still go outdoors more.

As for BC - the rains have arrived. And more inland - snow. Brrrrr.

Rejj you are so right. I tend to hibernate in the winter as well. I think I'm living in the wrong province for sure!!! Too many cold days but it could be worse, like Yukon or something!!!

Irene those pictures are absolutely breathtaking that you posted. Most of our leaves are gone now, with only a few still clinging to the branches with all their might.

I was helping getting DNA from the spring foals and then we decided to wean them from their moms. The neighbour had one and I had the other when mine decided to jerk me off my feet. I managed to hit my head on something, I think it was either the foal's jaw or his knee. Whichever, it hurt like hell and my back is giving me pain spasms between my shoulder blades and lower, just above my bum so I'm thinking seriously about a epsom salts bath within the next few minutes. From this day forward, I'm sticking to feeding only and when Dh's wrist heals I won't even be doing that. He has an appointment with physio on Tuesday so we will see what transpires from that. Would be nice if the MRI appointment firmed up soon too so we can get to the bottom of his injury.

Have a great weekend gals.

Thank you Irene and Verna for your encouragement.

Lovely photos, Irene. Fall is such a beautiful season. I'm glad that you've been enjoying it! Lots of the leaves have already fallen from the trees around here. It's been getting chillier. I find Winter to be the most challenging time of the year to get adequate movement. I have to remember that if I hibernate like a bear, I will look like one in the Spring. emoticon

I had a very encouraging appointment with my doctor today. Several months ago, she removed one of my two diabetes medications. At the last visit, she cut the dose of Metformin in half, and today, she cut the dose in half again. My A1C is 5.8, which is lower than the diabetes range. It's a big encouragement to keep eating well. I try to follow Dr. Joel Fuhrman's eating recommendations. I have no doubt that the weight I've lost and the nice long walks I've been taking are important factors in getting the diabetes under control. emoticon

Winter will be a challenge though. I hate cold weather and slippery sidewalks! I do have an incumbent bike though, so there's no excuse for not getting at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. emoticon

Thanks Rejjj. Sorry about the words showing up in weird places.

I like this walk - itís a quick drive from home, and I canít just step, outside of my door and walk, because itís hilly and my heart doesnít like that.

I know you like to walk. I hope you are getting lots in.

Hi gals.

Sara, you are a busy woman and 2 jobs as well. Wow. Congrats to your niece, Dr. Jo. Does West mean as far as Alberta? Wherever she is I wish her much success after all those years in University.

Irene, I'm glad your folks had a lovely Thanksgiving. Sounds like they are well looked after and are happy in their new surroundings. Your mom never has to cook again!!! Woo Hoo. I hope your Calgary son and Dil are managing to keep their heads above water so to speak and that their pup isn't in too much pain. Sad time for them and of course when our kids are sad we are too. Nice your "close" son had you and DH over for dinner. We were away but I cooked the turkey carcas and brought the broth home. Made soup for dinner last night and it was absolutely divine.

Well, better raid the fridge for dinner soon, got another load of laundry to do yet and we will be visiting DH's bro in hospital later this evening. I was out and about all morning delivering my Avon. Loving that little job and get so excited when I find another customer. Most are my age, some younger but I love the interacting. Sharpens the mind I think!!

Have a great evening everyone.

It has been a few weeks since I last posted. I was just beginning my second job. It is going well. Still adjusting to my new sleep pattern as I'm also working my Night shift job too. With life happening around me too it sometimes feel like I don't know if I'm coming or going.
Just want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and pray you all had a good day remembering all the blessings we have daily happening around us.
We celebrated my niece last night on getting her doctorate in Physical Therapy. 11 yrs of university and we now get to call her Dr. Jo. She now teaches out west (I live in Ontario) so west could be anywhere!! Lol - Not exactly sure just where she is. She worked hard for this and is the youngest to achieve this doctorate. So proud of her she is only 31.
Hope everyone has a great wknd and I'm thankful for all the support from this team.
