Late to bed last night so a little tired for gym this morning. Just wondering what's up for dinner!! Tomorrow we go to check on DH's CPap machine to be sure it is working right, then maybe we'll do a little shopping. I have a friend who's turning 75 on Friday and her daughter is arranging a get together with several friends to help her celebrate. I have no idea what to get her so am thinking about a nice throw blanket for her couch on these cold winter nights, maybe a cup for her to enjoy her hot chocolate in and some lotion to pamper herself. Any other ideas out there!!! She pretty well has everything else imaginable!!!

Hope everyone is keeping well and warm

Nice to hear from you Irene. Hope you are able to ditch that cold for good. Glad to hear your folks are ok for the time being anyway. I think most of us are trying to stay healthy through these winter months. No flu or colds here for the last month anyway. DH had a terrific cold with lots of coughing so we aren't in any hurry to get sick again. I managed to stay clear of it so am thankful for that.

Went to gym this morning, was nice to get moving in different directions after the weekend. Not too many showed up as it was snowing and blowing when we went to town but by the time I left the gym at noon the sun was out and the wind had gone somewhere else. Thank goodness.

Hope all's well in your world Dot and Sara.

Hello everyone. My apologies for being so silent. I am okay.

I got back from Ontario last Friday - my parents are still managing for now in their retirement home. Donít know how much longer this will work, but day by day.

Unfortunately I caught a cold when I was out there - the friends I stayed with both had colds - so I couldnít see my parents for the last 10 days before I left. Except 2 days before I left I took my mother to an important appointment. I wasnít coughing or sneezing then, and I wore a mask.

Meanwhile that cold knocked the stuffing out of me - I have been absolutely exhausted. Itís on,y today I am beginning to feel normal again.

Anyway I will try to pop in more, but I make no promises.

Hi Ladies

I've been playing on my new computer all evening trying to figure out Windows 10!! So far so good. The biggest problem is trying to remember all the Passwords for the numerous sites and then trying to figure out the e mail procedures on how to add folders etc. but I seem to have managed to conquer all the obstacles. Even got the printer set up so now I can even print stuff should I want to. It was easy peasy as soon as I figured out that for some reason the printer had gone offline. Once I switched it back online the computer picked it up immediately and that is all that was needed.

It stormed last night so the sledding was a little tough this morning at feeding time but it went well and everyone was happy with me. DH had to remove the snow off the road as we did get a fair amount and it did blow like the dickens half the night. I think our Balzac Billy saw his shadow this morning but what does a rodent know about when spring is going to arrive. He isn't a Meteorologist after all!!

As of today we have only the mammas, the stud and one other mare here. The rest are off to begin their winter training and/or getting fit for the races. I maybe should take a page out of their books and go for a walk every day and extend the duration slowly but surely!! DH and I were galavanting all morning and half the afternoon looking at horses etc and enjoying the mountain views.

We went to visit our closest kids today and while SIL worked on my new computer to get things from the old one onto this one I prepared dinner so that was our trade off. I had most of dinner prepared before we went over there so we were all able to visit a little before dinner. DH forgot his insulin at home so right after dinner we had to come home which is ok because I've been on my feet since I got out of bed this morning!! Grandson and team lost their hockey game as well last night. He wasn't too happy about it either but both his dad and he did admit that the whole team was off. They play again tomorrow and the team plus parents is bussing it to the game which is at least a 2.5 hour trip one way. I hope all goes well for everyone tomorrow.

I'm happy to say I will be going to bed early again tonight. Slept somewhat better last night so here's hoping tonight is better yet.

Wishing everyone a pleasant evening and a wonderful day tomorrow. We are expecting snow and wind plus the temperature will be dropping but not so much that we will be freezing to death!!

Happy FEBRUARY 1st everyone.

Grandson played last night and they lost 2-1. He was do upset with himself. I met him when he came out of the dressing room and he walked right into my arms and put his head on my shoulder and I could tell he'd been crying. Gave him a big hug and told him he played well and that we are proud of him and love him whether he wins or looses. A little smile from him, but know he'll beat himself up for a few days then he'll refocus and get back in the game.
Baked 3 kinds of cookies today for hubbies lunches - yes I sampled, but because they make me feel heavy after eating them, it won't be hard for me to refrain from eating them.
Been snowing all day, but just a light snow. But it is accumulating so I think shovelling will be in our future.
Groundhog day tomorrow - Spring is coming ladies, keep that in mind, just don't know if there be more snow storms before it does.
Happy Saturday- talk later.

Sara, nice to hear that your grandson is ready to play hockey again. Hopefully no more injuries.

So you have a Peppy Le peu in your backyard Dot. I hope it moves along as their aroma is not Chanel No. 5 by any stretch of the imagination. I actually had to dig a trench all around our pumphouse and place cement blocks in them so the little beggars quit digging all around it. They tried every side after the blocks were in place but I foiled their attempts. It was extremely easy digging for them as the pumphouse was newly built. That was a couple years ago and since then nothing and I sure hope there will be no more of them trying to live anywhere near our yard!!

I didn't sleep well the last two nights so it will be early bedtime for me tonight.

Week is ending better than it started. Got 2 aquafit classes in this week. Felt really good after them.
Can't believe January is over already. Days are getting longer. Not as dark in the mornings when driving to work. Nice feeling - can't wait to get into my gardens this Spring. Always enjoy the relaxing feeling that comes from working the earth, and seeing the grandkids enjoy it as well.
Grandson will be in net tomorrow night for his first game since he injured his hip. He's excited!!
One more day of work than the weekend - Yeah!!!
Good night ladies -

Way to go Dot in meeting your goals for January. Kudos. We were in the City all day yesterday and saw the Nephrologist. So far so good, DH is holding his own. His daughter also attended the meeting and had her own questions regarding her being the kidney donor, plus she asked questions to clarify other matters neither DH nor I had actually thought of. Glad she was there. We then visited with DH's son and his children over dinner. We hadn't seen them for a very long time and it was lovely to catch up. When we will see them again is anyone's guess as he isn't one to keep in touch with any of his family??? Who knows why. Then on the way home we stopped to visit DH's bro and his wife, my favourite SIL. We had a lovely visit and once again a few laughs.

Went to the gym this morning which was more grueling than our usual Thursday class but it was ok and yes, I was glad it was over. I then went to get my hair cut, had to wait quite a while but hey, I have more time than money so the wait didn't bother me. Caught up on Facebook news.

Today I have to finish the books and report to GST as tomorrow we will be back in the City for a consultation with the dietician. Next week it's back to have DH's C-pap checked and it is the Thursday that I met up with my girls club. I'm gonna call it a club notwithstanding it is only 3 gals!!

I have already planned what's for dinner so that makes the rest of my day easy

Beautiful out there today; hope your weather is lovely as well.

Gym today. The exercise class was actually easy compared to yesterdays even if she did go a little overtime. Because I forgot to buy toothpaste yesterday I had to go to the store again and while I was there I figured I might as well cruise around the store to see if there were any "bargains." Nope, nothing that caught my eye anyway but I did get in some extra steps at least. I just finished lunch and now feel quite tired so am thinking I'd better get out of this chair and get something done. We need to track everything DH eats and drinks today for his Friday appointment so I need to figure out a nutritious dinner!! I did buy some chicken thighs so will do them up in the oven with maybe some rice and veggies. DH is off to the hospital to get his bloodwork done for tomorrows appointment. I doubt the results will get to the doctor in time for that appointment but I suggested for the last week that he go get it done but he didn't. emoticon

Well, I need to get out and do the chores so will talk sometime tomorrow--- I hope. emoticon

Hope everyone had a good day. I went to the gym this morning then had a few groceries to buy for this weeks pre planned meals. Lots of green veggies plus I even have swiss chard in the freezer from my garden so I'm going very green this week!! Two appointments for DH on Wednesday and Friday so that means I'm on the go every day this week. He has to track his food for one day and take it to the Friday meeting. That appointment is with the dietician so I'm hoping to learn all kinds of wonderful things. Lucky for us, I have always been interested in nutrition so I may not learn a whole lot after all!! It would be nice to learn how to make things easier at least LOL

Absolutely beautiful weather today but I didn't have any extra time to spend outside other than chores. Had several telephone calls to return and they always manage to take longer than expected. I'd far rather text or e mail but it is lovely to hear a dear friends voice too. One call was to a friend who is also having kidney trouble and who is hoping to have a live donor although neither of her daughters nor her husband are matches. But these days if you have a donor that doesn't match then that person's kidney is put on the market so to speak and a donor is found who is compatible. Then the surgeries all take place on the same day, maybe not in the same city but on the same day. Kidneys aren't banked they are transplanted immediately so it may well be that a person only gets a few hours notice to get himself to the hospital and prepped for transplant. My friend told me about all the tests that are required, particularly of the donor but tons of tests and innoculations for the recipient as well. Booster shots of those childhood diseases are needed too, plus dental, plus plus plus. One wouldn't think dental would affect a kidney transplant but apparently it does. The surgery for the recipient is not as invasive as the surgery for the donor. Remember that old song, can't remember the name or who sung it but it went "Some day we'll look back and say it was fun." Charlie Pride maybe??? I have used that phrase many times and will continue to use it I'm sure.

Well, time to get the tub run and plan on an early night as I did not sleep well again last night. I was still lying awake at 3:45 a.m. so an early night sounds great.

A better start to this work week - physically & mentally.
A co-worker is taking a few days off, she is going through a rough patch right now and is feeling a little depressed. Told her I understood- I felt that way last week, and was thinking the same thing - need some time off. Planning on taking Family Day off - Feb 17th so it will give me a 3 day wknd and a 4 day workweek. Then a few days in March, then a few days in April. Then I can plan my vacation days for this year.

Made some chicken vegetable soup and it smells good. Can't wait to have some. I do love my soups & stews during the winter months. Actually any time of the year - lol

Have a great evening ladies.

SARA

Dot I sure enjoyed your post. You are so kind to make a chef's apron for your friend's birthday. She is truly a marvel, blind but has such a positive attitude. Many could take a lesson from her. She probably has made many a person's day I certainly admire her too. Sorry to hear you aren't sleeping well either. I've been ok the past 2 or 3 nights.

Sara, I hope you have figured out what's giving you headaches. Maybe Dot is onto something with suggesting the allergy pills.

I need to get someone to transfer all the data from my old laptop to my new one. I'm hopelessly useless in that department!! I bumble along with day to day things but am petrified I will loose the data if I attempt any transfers so best to pay for it and be safe.

Nice day out there today. Might be able to get a walk in yet today. Am working on the books. My favourite job. NOT

So sorry to hear about your headaches Sara. I sure hope it isn't allergy to cats because you don't have any control over who has cats in their rooms. I too hope that Logan recovers quickly and is able to get back on the ice real soon and into his goalie gear. We have a goalie in our family as well and are mighty proud of him. He's saved the team's bacon many times. He will be 17 in April.

Dot and Irene, hope you are both well.

I didn't sleep well last night, DH's C Pap was making way too much noise and then I had to get up to go to the bathroom at 7:30 and never did fall asleep after that. It would seem he didn't sleep well either as he is napping on the couch now!! I did get to the gym this morning, stopped to buy a few groceries and then came home to prepare lunch for DH's sister and her son. They are very upbeat, especially the son, Sister has a few health issues as well as family issues going on but on the whole she is a happy gal. They left about 4:30 but before leaving I suggested they visit with the horses for a minute while I fed them their grain. Sister didn't get out of the car but her son, Roger accompanied me and watched the gate so the horses didn't escape. We had a great afternoon and I sent them home with a care package of home made relish and pickles as well as some beef. T'was a lovely day all round.

Haven't made it to Aquafit the last 2 nights. Last night was a miscalculation on meal prep time, and tonight I'm not feeling well. Came home early from work. Bad headache - think maybe its allergies - I have 3 rooms that have cats and since I started cleaning I've had more headaches. Some days like today it gets so bad I can't function.

Grandson (hockey goalie with hip issues) is still on the injured list. Playoffs are happening without him. The good news is they are winning their games, so hopefully they will move on so he gets to get back on the ice again. He is skating with them at practices, just not allowed to put on goalie gear yet.
I think his parents thought or was hoping it was going to be a quick fix, but his physiotherapist is a hockey dad with a son the same age so I trust him to know & do what is best for Logan.

Hope everyone is having a good week - stay focused, stay active, stay healthy.

SARA

It was a lovely walk I took yesterday. Sunshine shining on my face and lots of tracks to look at. Seems we might have a lot of coyotes around and the odd deer, lots of partridges and maybe a pheasant or two, for sure one!! I actually had to unzip my coat on the way home!!

Then I prepared dinner in the roaster, chicken, potatoes and carrots, made a salad and took it over to DH's brother's place. He and his wife are fun to visit and both always so happy to see us and even happier if I call in advance and tell them I'm bringing dinner. This SIL is the one I'm closest to, we always have a few laughs.

Tomorrow DH's sister and her son are coming for lunch. They live an hour and half away so we don't see her very often. I will have to be moving fast out of the gym tomorrow to get home and get lunch on the table on time!! This afternoon I will do some advance preparations and tidy up the kitchen after and that should allow me to visit rather than be busy preparing lunch while they are here. Looking forward to seeing her.

Have a great day everyone and a lovely evening.

That lovely bath in epsom salts last night did wonders for my sore hips. It's the side stepping that does it to me every time!! I guess I'd better get a long walk in today after chores to keep those hips limber and maybe encourage an ounce or two to go away!! The sun is lovely and bright today so it will be a great day to be outdoors.

Have a fun day everyone

Went to gym today and the exercise instructor had a whole now routine for us again today. She is so good about keeping us from getting bored and varies the intensity almost weekly. My hips are bothering me already - - - can't wait until morning!! I know exactly which exercise made them sore so maybe I should practice it more often to prevent getting sore again.

The weather has warmed up considerably which makes me happy. DH got the tractor started today while I was at gym so when I got home we filled all the feeders with new hay and while he was monkeying with other things I fed them their grain. Gee they sure were talkative this morning. While I was outside I noticed deer tracks around the pens. I'm thinking they smelled grain and decided to investigate more closely. There is always some spilled grain for whoever wants to pick it up whether it be birds, ducks and now deer. Usually the deer come into the yard in summer to stand in the shade of the trees or graze on the lovely lawn grass. Always some kind of entertainment going on around here!!

From the many posts I've read lately it seems a woman's work is never done. The men have it easier than the women and women also have taken on more responsibility. Yet it is the men who have the failing health - mostly due to not looking after themselves some time in their lives or never having looked after themselves. Just my deduction which really means nothing. LOL Sorry to hear you and your DH had words Sara. Believe me, I can relate to that!!! I just read the poem, When I Wander just the other day and be darned if I can remember where. I found it very interesting and profoundly sad. You are so right about younger folks not wanting to have anything to do with seniors and showing no respect. No wonder seniors don't get proper care in hospitals etc. Firstly, that is due to staff shortages and secondly, the "I'm just here for the paycheck" attitude of many. Sorry state this world is in. My mom had dementia/alzheimers the last years of her life and it was not pleasant to see. Thankfully she passed before she forgot how to feed herself. I saw so many folks being fed because they didn't remember how to do that. I'm sad you are going through this with your dad Sara.

We were on the road early AGAIN today but on a pleasure trip rather than another appointment. We drove south to Lethbridge and enjoyed temps of +5 C and returned home to -16C. It is supposed to warm up for tomorrow and be nicer all week than it was last week with frigid -28 to -30C It's not 8 P.M. yet and I am ready for bed. I think I'm going to take my sleep meds and head off to bed within the hour. (Hope my second wind doesn't kick in before then)

Hi Dot and Irene. Hope all's well today in your world.

WHEN I WANDER
author unknown
When I wander, don't tell me to come and sit down, wander with me, it may be because I'm hungry, thirsty, need the toilet - or maybe I just need to stretch my legs.
When I call for my mother (even though I'm ninety) don't tell me she has died. Reassure me, cuddle me, ask me about her. It may be that I am looking for the security that my mother once gave me.
When I shout out please don't ask me to be quiet . . . or walk by, I am trying to tell you something, but have difficulty in telling you what. Be patient. Try to find out, I may be in pain.
When I become agitated or appear angry, please don't reach for the drugs first. I am trying to tell you something. It may be too hot, too bright, too noisy. Or maybe it's because I miss my loved ones. Try to find out first.
When I don't eat my dinner or drink my tea, if may be because I've forgotten how to. Show me what to do, remind me. It may be that I just need to hold my knife and fork, I may know what to do then.
When I push you away while you\re trying to help me wash or get dressed, maybe it's because I have forgotten what you have said. Keep telling me what you are doing over and over and over. Maybe others will think you're the one that needs the help!
With all my thoughts and maybes, perhaps it will be you who reaches my thoughts, understands my fears, and will make me feel safe. Maybe it will be you who I need to thank.
IF I ONLY KNEW HOW>

Came across this a few months ago and I stop and read it once in a while. I would love to give it to everyone working in a seniors home with residents who are suffering from Dementia or Alzheimer's. I think of my dad when I read this as well. He is in LTC and lives with Dementia. Always sad to leave him when I visit, but I also know he is where he should be.

When I switched over to dayshift from the nightshift, I didn't realize how many of the staff don't really know how to deal with the elderly. It is not something that is taught anymore, and most of the younger ones don't have a lot to do with seniors anymore. Growing up, our grandparents were a big part of our family, and we treated our elders with respect. Now I see that people think that seniors are just old people, and respect is not even in these young ones vocabulary - - really sad
Have actually had a hard day today, thoughts are all over the place, emotions are out of control, and dh and I had some words that ended in him leaving for a few hours, which resulted in me eating what I shouldn't have.(donut) Roast Beef dinner was good, even if it was ate in silence, Now I'm ready for bed and will get up and make sure the day starts off with a good healthy breakfast and hopefully ends with an Aquafit class.

Good night ladies

Wow DOTZ, I think I'd like 5 hunky firemen in my backyard too!! Might have to invent an emergency just so they come. Just to add more excitement to these cold snow filled days.

Lots of snow this weekend. Shovelling a few times. Cleaned off 2 vehicles that had many inches of snow on top - neither vehicle moved all weekend. Most snow we've had all winter and probably not the end of it either. We all pitched in and helped - boys shovelling, me cleaning snow off, hubby chatting with neighbors! He's good at that - lol

Have a roast in the oven with carrots and potatoes. Smelling pretty good right now.

Back to work tomorrow - weekend almost over.

Stay healthy, stay happy!!

Dh went to the specialist yesterday and this one said he needs a knee replacement - this doctor had nothing good to say about the last specialist he saw. The one who said "loose weight" & "you're wasting my time". So now he waits to get in to see another specialist/surgeon - actually the one who did my knee replacement. But in the meantime he'll be getting a customized brace which WSIB will cover.

Verna either fence would be a challenge I think. I remember trying to get over both. Corral fences are easier for sure. Miss those days. Farm was sold a few years ago, we wanted to buy it, but we were outvoted by the family to go thru a real estate agent who priced it higher than what we could afford. A bit if bitterness still lingers. It was our dream to live on the farm with our kids & their families so the next generation could have the country experience which my eldest son really misses. So now we just tolerate the 6 siblings and once Grampa is gone we'll decide then if we continue getting together for family gatherings. The only issue is that my oldest sister married my husbands oldest brother so . . . Might be a tricky situation.

Snow started during the night and its coming from the East so dh says we're in for a pretty good snowfall. Not as much as Newfoundland, but more than we've had all winter. But they also say its supposed to rain tonight - duh make up your minds people.

Well must get some things done around here . Enjoy the Weekend Ladies -

Back to Calgary this morning with DH to the podiatrist for the gout in his big toe which is now crystals coming out the end, just at the nail bed. I could have slapped that doctor just because. His first question was What are you taking for gout?? I answered nothing, then he says why not. I said because you didn't prescribe anything last time we saw you and his (dh) kidneys are now functioning at 10%. He shut up like I'd filled his mouth with peanut butter. Then I told him he might want to put a note on his file that we are now learning about dialysis because the kidneys are at 10%. When he first came in he was all officious and offensive in my opinion but after I tuned him in a little he actually was very pleasant!!. I should have asked him who peed in his cornflakes this morning!!! Gotta find the humour in things these days!!! The bottom line is he is very skeptical that the toe will heal and eventually it will come to amputation. Yup diabetes is a silent killer. By the time symptoms appear it is already too late. Kidneys are so close to shutting down but there were no symptoms until the very late stages. And round and round it goes. I've said it before and I'll say it again Getting old is not for sissies but one must be thankful for growing old, not everyone does.

It's cold as all get out today again but at least we aren't getting the horrible weather like B.C., Manitoba (my hometown of Portage la Prairie) or Newfoundland. We did get some drifting across our road but not too bad.

Oh my, the TV is on and His Honour Donald Trump is spewing his lies once again. I understand many like him and he apparently has done wonders for the US economy. Some love him, some hate him. For me, he HAS done some good things it's the lies I can't tolerate in fact I can't tolerate anybody telling lies but the US reporters are going about it all wrong --when he lies they should be suggesting the poor bugger has Dementia and can't remember what happens from day to day and it isn't really his fault that he doesn't remember people (the Ukrainian Les Parnes being the latest) hence his saying "I've never met him, he could be a very nice guy, I meet thousands of people but I've never met him."- Oh my gawd. Shoot me now LOL

Sara, the fences I hop over aren't barb wire they are board corral fences. No way I'd be hopping barbwire ones. Don't need a rip in my pants nor my arse.

I can almost see the look on your hubby's face when you turned to look at him after he grabbed your arse. That is indeed a lovely compliment he gave you. Next thing you know he'll be feeling around in the bed for you!!!

I am sorry to hear about your grandson's injury. It sounds horribly painful. A sprained ankle is apparently painful (Never had the pleasure of spraining my ankle..... yet that is) I just can't imagine how painful a hip would be. Hope he heals quickly and completely.

Verna you make me laugh with your stories. I especially like the one about you "hopping" the fence to break the ice in the water bowl for the horses. The picture I envision makes me laugh - having been on a farm with cows and knowing how high the fences are your exercise classes must be doing some awesome things for you. Lol and yes hate when the water freezes in the winter and silly us freezing our butts off breaking the ice so the animals have water (which I know is important).

My grandson saw the physiotherapist today about his hip and he has a sprained hip & muscle. Exercises and minimal activity & rest and he should be back to normal. He doesn't want him to stop being active just to limit how much he does.

Got a compliment (kind of) from my dh tonight. I was making supper and everytime I turned around he was there. Told him to get out of my way. He said you've lost so much weight I didn't see you, then he grabbed my butt (that's right ladies, I said he grabbed my butt) and said "where did your butt go?" I no longer fill out my jeans in the derriere area.
So like I said a "kind of" compliment.
Verna, I didn't burn supper either even with the butt grabbing. Lol - Gourmet BLT's were on the menu tonight. I have mine without the bread - I put tomato & bacon between lettuce and eat it like a sandwich . Add some cheese too. Fills me up - and I avoid the carbs.

Well off to Aquafit - need to keep up with all you active ladies out there.

It feels colder today than yesterday but I know it has to do with how fast the air is moving today compared to yesterday. No wind, just moving air and it is bitey. This morning (our stallion) Mutawaazy's waterer was starting to freeze over so I hopped the fence with my trusty hammer and a perfect sized piece of board to slosh the ice chips out of the waterer. It was an easy job this morning compared to yesterday as the waterer in my boys' pen was frozen 6 inches thick. Anyway, I digress. I just started chipping the ice out when I saw someone's breath just over my shoulder. Guess who. Yup Mutawaazy was right there checking out what the blazes I was doing. He had to be very interested because he left his oats to come over to check me out. So I petted and talked to him a little then put my arms around his neck and he nuzzled into my shoulder. Now stallions are known to bite but not my guy, at least not this morning and I wasn't afraid he would 'cause I had enough clothes on he wouldn't hurt anyway!! They nip but they don't let go instead they pull off your skin. I've had pinches from the yearlings before and believe me they hurt, especially as they usually pinch your arm and in summer that arm is bare. Oh well, all in a day's work!!

Yes, I guess the days are getting longer Dot but I really haven't noticed!! I'm usually in the kitchen preparing dinner at dusk and I have 2 west windows and one north window so I really should have noticed shouldn't I have !! Well, I didn't, haven't ----bet I was too busy preparing that gourmet meal ba ha ha. Surely tonight I will notice cause I'm preparing gourmet macaroni and cheese with chunks of George Formaned sausage. Love my George Foreman cooking gadget-----it never smokes as the fat is immediately drained way and has no chance of setting the smoke alarm off. When I fry anything, even bacon, I have the security tag right beside me so I can push it immediately upon the alarm going off but never in time not to get the phone call from the Security company and in case you are wondering, yes I have had the fire department arrive I think 3 times. Funny thing the firetruck drives slowly up the lane fully loaded with 4 or 5 firefighters. How many fighters are needed when they already know before they even leave the station that there is no fire as the security people would have contacted them to say oh just a over ambitious housewife cooking dinner on high heat. I'm better known to ALL my friends as High Burner Gertie whose motto is "When it's smokin it's cookin, when it's burnt it's done."

So have a wonderful time preparing dinner tonight folks oh and don't have the heat turned on too high under that frying pan if you're using one!!!

Well hubby sees another specialist on Fri in regards to his knee. This one thru WSIB. He might be off work for a while, but will have to wait and see what they say.
The last specialist he saw was recommended by his physician, and he literally said "you're wasting my time, loose some weight and your knee will be better". Hubby was not impressed.
Grandson (12 yrs old) (hockey player - goalie) is on the injured list - pulled muscle. Off to physio tomorrow with him. Hopefully it'll heal quickly, they are in play-offs right now. They need him!!

Have a good day ladies - Keep Smiling!

Yup, it was a balmy -30 again this morning. Pretty chilly feeding the horses this morning I tell ya!! My "Boy" was dancing on his back legs this morning when he saw me coming with a bucket in my hand. He's such a ham and the 4 girls were running and kicking up their heels. My other 2 boys were just happy to see me and as usual were sticking their faces in mine to the point where I couldn't get in the gate. The mammas were the only ones who weren't performing or jumping around. Guess being 7 months pregnant is slowing them down a little. After those little chores I went into town, did the exercise class thing, bought a few groceries and came home. Just walking from car to store then from garage to house chilled me right through and it took a little while to warm up. I had to resort to putting a vest on after an hour of being in the house.

I am presently thinking about dinner. Left over roast beef with gravy, green beans, a few potatoes for DH as he loves his potatoes even if he isn't supposed to have too much and I believe I'll make a coleslaw as well. Right now I'm having a small glass of wine!! Not on my so called "diet" but I wanted one and am having one so there. LOL

Tomorrow it's back to Calgary to get DH's C PAP machine checked out and Friday to the podiatrist. Nothing scheduled for next week YET!!

Got a telephone call from my cousin in Portage la Prairie MB a little while ago. She is a nurse and was wanting to know how things went yesterday. Mostly she has my back, always has so it was so wonderful to hear from her. Made my day.

Have a lovely evening and a wonderful tomorrow everyone.

Well ........... it was -30 when I got up this morning. So how do you like those apples!!!

DH dropped me off at the gym a bit early so I got on the elliptical before the exercise class which was much easier than it was last week. Then we were off to Calgary to the Kidney Clinic where we learned about dialysis types and procedures. DH chose the peritoneal which is the one I would have chosen for myself for sure. His daughter attended as well to learn about the ins and outs of being a donor. She thinks the removal of her kidney is going to be a piece of cake and I didn't want to burst her bubble as I can tell you it is no walk in the park!! For me it is just best to keep my mouth shut when around her as she sometimes makes me feel quite uncomfortable and insignificant. It's 20 year in March since I had a kidney removed. Gee time does fly. I just had a protein shake before gym so was ready to eat when we got out of the class at 4:00 so we went out and had dinner immediately. Sounds like there are going to be many many trips into Calgary both before and after dialysis and loads of tests before they even decide if DH would be approved.

Sara I agree with Dot in that family/friend time is important and I hope to have enough time to cultivate my friendships this year (as per my earlier post). Let's hear about your family visits throughout the year and all the fun times you share.

I believe I'm going to turn in early tonight.

Had a nice Family Lunch today at Eastside Marios with hubby, both sons, daughter in law & grandkids. It seems with lives so busy we've gotten away from spending time together. So my New Years Resolution is to bring back Family Time.

Have my workouts scheduled for this week and hopefully can get to them all.

Woke up to snow this morning, so much prettier than mud!! Lol

Hope all is going well in your world today and may this week bring you one step closer to reaching your goal.

Yes, Sara I prefer snow at this time of year any day over rain. Rain is an absolutely horrible thing to happen to us in winter. Hopefully you have clear skies today.

Dot, I'm thrilled to read that DH's swelling has come down. Such a HUGE relief to know the medication is working and things are getting better. That's gotta be the best news ever.

It's a little breezier here today and the thermometer needle is below 20C. Brrr not going to be lingering outside too long today either!! We had company yesterday so I didn't go out at all. DH was out showing a gal the horses and while he was out there they all fed the horses. Woo Hoo. Not sure what the plan is for today yet but snowshoeing is not on the agenda this week that's for certain. The forecast has changed to even colder days than was first predicted. I see DH has the Curling on so maybe it will be a TV day.

Take are all and keep smiling.

Rain rain go away - I'd rather have snow!! I know, it's not everyone's favorite thing, but I love the snow.

Non stop rain since yesterday. We did venture out to Walmart for a new shower rod, only because without one no one could shower. Put up a new shower curtain I had lying around and bought new bath mats to match. Bathroom looks cozy on this rainy cold day.

Hoping everyone is having a good weekend. Having a difficult time staying within my proper calorie intake, so need to really work on that.

Tomorrow is a new day (probably will still be raining) but will make the changes I need to make in what I'm eating.

Good night ladies

SARA

January 11, 2020 the first day of the 5% Winter Challenge. Will I lose 5% of my weight this time? Will I be one of the 5% of people who actually lose weight and keep it off forever? Will the change of decade be the one for me to get serious about improving my health, getting stronger, getting in touch with my friends more often, visiting them more often either by electronic means or by knocking on their doors, being a better friend, complaining less?? I don't know the answers to all those questions but I know I am going to try. So I've already weighed myself (don't like the numbers) and I'm ready to get started!!

DH and I went to see the movie Just Mercy. We both thought it was a good movie and was a true story. I prefer to watch true stories. DH wants to see 1917, not sure I do but in all likelihood we will go to see it after one of his appointments, if for no other reason than to maybe get away from real life for an hour or two.

It's pretty chilly out there today and the rest of this week is supposed to only get colder. Monday and Tuesday being the worst days. If it's cold it's unlikely it will snow and blow though and that's a good thing!! Crisp days are great for snowshoeing.

Thinking about you Dot as you battle the rain and wind, hoping DH is losing some of that swelling and you Irene as you continue to bop back and forth across the country. Hope your DH is ok and holding down the fort so to speak. Hi Sara hope all's well in your world.

Last night we went to visit DH's bro and his SO. They ordered Chinese food. I ate too much. I gained 5 lbs. Now how's that for a story LOL I had a horrible sleep last night as well due to a stomach ache that actually resonated into my back so needless to say, I am tired today!! BUT ladies I did go to the gym even if I really didn't feel like it. At the moment I'm in my chair and my legs feel like rubber. Not sure why but they do.

It's pretty cold out there today and there is a slight breeze so that makes it even colder., Well it is Alberta and it is January so we can't expect Florida weather!!

I intend on getting the books finished today so I'd better get moving in that direction

Hope all is well in your respective worlds and that Dh's Dr. appt went well Dot.

Good luck DH of Dot and Dot please let us know the results when you find out.

It's sunny here today but windy so the snow is blowing like crazy and really swirls around the buildings. I guess the road will be drifted in AGAIN. The joys of living in the country!!

We have 9 horses at home right now and 3 out for training. I guess the boys are doing fantastic as is the old boy Jigs. He is such a sweetie and so well broke. A person can even open gates off him so he is a valuable critter for sure!! PLUS he loves everybody. Actually the ones away are living the dream right now. They are learning new things, they are busy and they are in a climate much better than ours. Alberta has such varying weather areas it's unbelievable. Where they are it never gets real cold but the drawback there is the blasted wind. It's always blowing.

I shall work on the books today. UUUUggggghhhhhh

We had chicken too!! I put a whole one in the roaster just before I went outside and by the time I got back in it was cooked and I was only out an hour and a half!!! The horses were really happy to see me with the oat buckets as it has gotten quite a bit colder and they need the extra heat oats will generate. They were running and kicking up their heels so I had to be careful of their rambunctiousness that's for sure. I put the 2 mammas into the sheltered pen and made a nice soft bed for them in two separate places in case Dreamer continues being a bag to Kulka. I got an extra workout that's for sure carrying hay and straw from one place to another!! They were curious to find out what I was doing and even left their oats to come investigate. I bet they are laying down right now and taking it easy!! Mostly horses sleep on their feet but I just thought the mammas should lay for a bit on a nice soft bed is all!!!

I came in and put potatoes and turnips on the stove and did a stir fry of zucinni, onion and yellow peppers, made a salad for DH as he doesn't like turnips nor zucinni. He was pretty excited about the potatoes and gravy, his all time favourite food but he didn't overindulge so that's good.

I hope your DH's swollen ankles have seen the last of their days and the doctor has come to a conclusion of what is causing the problem. Your soup sounds lovely, always a safe bet when one is looking for something nutritious and delicious.

Well, I guess the dishes won't get done themselves so I'd better head into the kitchen and then I want to put a few dark streaks into my "paling"hair!! Have a great rest of the evening and a great day tomorrow. I think books will be on my agenda as much as I hate doing them but as they say "a dirty job but somebody's gotta do it."

Good to hear from you Sara.

Gym yesterday and again today which were totally new workouts so it was a learning curve but one heck of a workout!! Helps deal with some of the frustration on the home front which I pray will get better once we go to the meetings set up by the Kidney Clinic. I pray he will listen to them cause he won't listen to me when I try to remind him of what the doctor has instructed. Surely reinforcement from the clinic will work but as you reaffirmed for me, Dot, one can't even help another if they are not willing to help themselves or at least listen and learn. Enough already!!

It's pretty cool today, fog early this morning which has cleared off but it doesn't like Mrs. Sunshine will be coming out for a visit. -12 when I left for the gym at 10:00 but it seems colder right now with the slight breeze blowing. I need to get outside and get some exercise today. One thing is happening at least, the scale is going the right direction the last couple of days. That always helps elevate our moods.

I hope your DH has vacuumed the living room and maybe even put the vacuum away!!

Irene, Sara and anyone else lurking, I hope you are having a good day.

Dot, once again you have provided an answer. You are absolutely right it is probably better to vent here than to DH . . . . safer that's for sure cause you gals can't bite my head off LOL When we go to the Kidney Clinic in a couple of weeks I'm going to see if there is a support group for caregivers that they can refer me to. Years ago I belonged to a 12 Step Program, still have the books, maybe not the same reason now but I'm sure the steps can be adapted to fit my situation today. That was the best thing I ever did for myself and I knew I was always safe to vent and there was never any judgment passed because we were all in the same boat, paddling for our lives!!
I did go out and feed the horses and after that went for a decent walk. The cold is coming out of my legs and arms right now. It is a lovely day out there.

Dot you always have the right words to spark us along our journey. Thank you for your caring message. The day is shiny and bright so far; hopefully it stays that way. Yesterday we had "snow squalls" blow through and DH says our road is totally blown in so I guess he will be pushing the snow out with the tractor and front end loader this afternoon as tomorrow we both have doctor's appointments. He has been watching what he eats and drinks for the most part so I am hoping his kidney function has improved somewhat or at least stayed the same. The worst part of this whole thing is he won't discuss it so I have no one to talk my worries over with. Maybe I'm not supposed to talk about it and be a worrywart as worry does no good anyway and it would likely only stress him out more than he already is. I need to get off my rear end and do something instead of sit in my chair all day playing games on the computer. I bet I'd lose an ounce or two if I sat less and moved more too. LOL I will definitely get outside for a longer period of time today. I;ll check out the snow drifts on the road!!!

Irene I hope you and your folks are doing well today and things settle for a while. Not sure if you are home or in Ontario. I agree with Dot it has to be incredibly hard for you to deal with these matters when the distance is so great. You should be be given frequent flyer awards if nothing else. I sure hope you get to spend time with your son on his birthday. I have to say, your DH has to be one patient, unselfish man. Do take care of yourself.

Sara, you have the right idea about not beating yourself up and simply getting back on track to get your mind calmed down to conquer the stress we are all prone to suffering from. Time to change our mindsets methinks!!

Well ladies seems like we all have the same idea in how to loose those nasty pounds, now to implement them into our life style. Glad we have this group to encourage each other and not be judged by slipping up. CAUSE today has been a bust - a little down today. Would have been my mom's birthday, but she left this earth 32 yrs ago this April. So I've been binge eating. Stopping now, so will get back on track and not kick myself for today.
Happy Weekend Everyone .

Thanks for the encouragement Dot. You have a great idea going on with taking one step at a time, breaking one habit at a time. We went to an outdoor New Year's get together yesterday and there was plenty of food, some of it healthy, some not so much!! I indulged in both all afternoon so there was no need for me to have dinner. By the time I ate today I had fasted 18 hours. I've read that fasting for at least 12 hours a day is a good way to drop a few pounds but I'm not sure I want to go that route. I think it is best to just do portion control and majorly eliminate sweets. So there you have it, a new year, new decade but old problem!! LOL

Hello gals. Irene I so hope you will be able to celebrate your son's birthday with him. I have been wondering about your health and how you are feeling with all this extra stress. I can't help take any of the stress away but please know that i think of you and pray you and your family are coping well. Your DH must be missing you a lot this past year and you him. As they say This too shall come to pass . . . . . eventually.

Oh boy we were away for the weekend which means eating disasters but we only had wine one evening for dinner so that kept me more focused on what and how much I was eating. Just the same I see the scale has moved even more upward. I'm not even going to think about it until after the New Year which is just 2 days away. We are going out New Year's Eve with friends to a Chinese restaurant for dinner. I won't be having drinks as DH is not allowed (Says me!!) and I simply refuse to pay those exorbitant prices for a glass of wine or highball. Nope not going to happen but the food will certainly add water weight if nothing else!! So HAPPY NEW YEAR folks and Sara I'm saying YEAH to pulling up our socks and getting the New Year off to a good start.

Thanks Sara. With my parents getting older - father turns 91 soon, and has dementia and some health problems, and mother has many health problems, and rapidly losing memory, and me being the only child, and living 3000 miles away, this is only going to get more complicated. This is the 6th trip out this year. I love my parents dearly, and being an only child, their sole support, but I do not know how I will get through the next few years. Plus I have heart issues of my own.

One day at a time. Itís all I can.

But being here means itís the first time my husband and I have been apart at Christmas in 46 years, and that I will probably not see my younger son on his 40th birthday. He lives in Calgary, and I havenít seen him since last March. Missed his August visit as I was in Ontario for another health visit. He really would like me there for his birthday. Itís not impossible yet, but itís not looking good.

Irene, welcome back to my neck of the woods. I'm in Guelph, not far from Hamilton. Hope your mom's time in the hospital is not a lengthy stay. Will remember her in prayer and you too.
One more family Christmas to get thru then a trip to see relatives ( cousins who are like second parents to me) an over night stay then Monday back to work. UGH!!
Stay safe everyone, and keep those calories down during this holiday season. Stay focused, eat healthy, keep smiling.

Oh Irene I am sorry to hear about your mom. Hope she recovers quickly. Dot you are so right about gaining weight this time of year, year after year. I've been in a slump and my thoughts have mainly been on DH and his illness but that has to change as I am not looking after myself physically or mentally. I must look after me if I expect to be of any help to him. I've noticed my hips are sore and I know that is from too much in my new recliner with my face into the laptop. I have tomorrow to get through and on Boxing Day I will start by riding the stationery bike downstairs and reading positive things. A friend just gave me one of those easy to read books like Chicken Soup for the Soul and I figure I can read that while I peddle my bum around in one spot!!

Forward and upward I say

Merry Christmas everyone

I like that you say it's your duty to eat all the leftovers. You must have been peeking into my house lately!!!

Gym this morning then off to Calgary to deliver sweet treats to special relatives and then back to our neighbourhood to deliver treats to the daughter who's hosting this year Tomorrow we will deliver to a young family that helped us out in the summer when our cows got out due to trees falling on the fence. I will pack up some baking and give them a package of beef as well --who knows what they want or need and I'm thinking they are young so groceries can always be used!! Especially good old farm beef.

Heading off to bed pretty soon. Haven't weighed consistently for the past 2 or 3 weeks. In that slump of "I don't really care" and I notice I haven't been taking my own medication either, seem to be focused on DH and his stuff. Have to get me back on track.

Oh, Sara I'm so sorry to hear you lost your sister when you were only 7. So very hard to explain death to a child of 7 years. Lots of sadness in this world. I pray the parents that just lost their daughter can overcome this terrible loss.

Thanks ladies for your prayers.
Kayla was her name. She was a skater, while her brother was in hockey. She also had epilepsy and I believe her death had something to do with that. Over 400 stickers were made for ALL the hockey players to wear on their helmets Thursday night, and they are having a patch of some kind sewn onto their jerseys for the remaining hockey season. I'm sure the Skating Club she belonged to is doing something too. A sad time here for these young kids, but also a part of life we all experience one time or another in our lives.
When I was 7 my 10 year old sister died from a heart defect we didn't know she had. She was very athletic as well. Died running in a track & field meet at school. Remember the day as if it was yesterday - my first experience with death.
Thanks again ladies for keeping this family in your prayers & thoughts.

Oh Sara what a horrible thing to happen to that family. I will certainly remember the family in my prayers. I just can't imagine why a little girl would pass in her sleep. You will be tired by the time the next week is over with the shortened weekend. Hopefully the work load won't be too heavy.

Dot, I like Swiss Chalet food but the restaurant closest to our end of Calgary seems to be so cold and unfriendly. I think the building is pretty old too so we don't go often.

I had a lovely afternoon visiting a dear friend in Calgary. Definitely ate too much and maybe had one too many egg nogs, but 'tis the season. LOL I enjoyed every last drop and don't regret it. My scale will likely reflect this binge!!

Can't believe another week has gone by. Had to work a few hrs today so my wknd has been shortened to 1 full day off.

Received some sad news this wk. A friend of my 12 yr old grandson who plays AA Hockey (grandson is on the A team) lost his 10 yr old sister. The hockey community has come together to support the family and these young guys who attend school, play hockey & other sports together. I'm asking that you remember this family & community in your prayers especially so close to Christmas. It will be hard for them to wrap there heads around what happened. - don't have all the details but they found her dead when they went to wake her up for school Thurs morning. Just asking for prayer.

oooh that wind was cold yesterday. Just the slightest breeze but it was a cutting breeze so no walking for me that's for sure.

DH's cold is trying to attach but the echinacea is keeping it at bay. I heard yesterday our hospital is full of flu patients. Thank goodness DH and I got the flu shot early just hope it keeps the illness away.

Not too much planned for today other than chores and the usual housework. Not planning to go anywhere.

Hope all's well with everyone.

I think I'll have to resort to giving DH Nyquil again tonight because he seems to be coughing a lot again today. Yesterday he was much better, coughing wise anyway. Guess I'm on for chore duty alone again today but better that than having him go out into the cold and get worse. The horses are always so glad to see me. Either they talk or they perform by running and jumping, kicking up their heels. The "BOY" horse dances at the gate when I come by. He loves being talked to and shows his happiness.

Irene I'm glad to hear your folks are fine for the time being anyway. Hopefully there will be no changes any time soon. You should be getting discounted air fare for all the trips you make!!

Well, better get moving, I want to make the gym today. No exercise class but I can do the machines at least while I'm in town!!

Hello. Sorry I havenít checked in in a while. Just feeling a bit overwhelmed with life I guess.

Dorothy and Verna - thanks for asking about my parents. I was out in Ontario, dealing with an ear cancer thing to do with my dad. Biopsy results came back clear. Yay. So no radiation needed. Iím in BC. Not going back til late January, unless something pops up. But they seem to be stable right now.

To make up for not being there I a, sending them 12 Christmas cards - The 12 Days of Christmas, and putting a family photo in each one. They seem to like it.

Verna, I hope that coughing of your DH clears up. Our DHs seem to have some things in common. Mine has diabetes and some kidney issues, and because of that medication caused gout.

Dorothy your Christmas decorations sound lovely.

I havenít put ours up yet. Been getting Christmas cards done and gifts mailed. I just do a table top tree now - much easier to deal with. And I feel quite Victorian.

Irene
