It is so fun seeing the kids at registration. I just saw them 2 months ago and they seem so much bigger. Some of the students I had in past years look so different how fast they change.
Today day one for the teachers was telling me how he has started walking because I inspired him. Sometime with the day to day ups and downs I forget I have lost 60lbs and I have kept it off for 4 years. I know it can be done.

Karen you are looking great. Enjoy the dancing.

Back to work and today was registration.
I did not get up at 5a to walk because I knew it would be a long day and I would be walking at school. I am so tired but happy to see the kids at registration. They grow so much over the summer.

I have been very stressed out and thus eating too many sweets because I am will be covering 2 campuses. I have not been to these schools in 3-4 years. They have not had a librarian since I was there. One school the books are a mess on the shelves no order at all. I can only do so much in the little time I have. Everyday I walk in and just think what a mess.

Ladies:

It is good to hear your plans to stay on track as we go back to school. We will have to keep encouraging each other in our journey

It is my plan to go to the gym in the mornings before I go to school. It will mean very early mornings but if I don't put myself first in the morning I will get lost during the rest of the day.

I just had that "talk" with myself last night about not working all day, most nights, and most weekends! I leave very little time for myself which is a big part of why I overeat a lot of the time. I had a meeting with my new principal this morning. I hadn't even met him yet. We've not been in the building at the same times. He had some excellent ideas but they will take a lot of work! I really struggle with finding a balance. It's my plan to work on that this year!

Sticking with our nutrition and fitness routines once school starts is something I think we all struggle with. I think the key to being successful with that is making ourselves a priority. Instead of exercising last at the end of the day, we need to do it before we do some other things! We also need to keep in mind that if it doesn't get done at school that day, it does NOT mean we bring it home with us. It'll still be there tomorrow!!

Dee - you are so right about the weather being nice!! I am enjoying it also!! Great work on your streak!!
emoticon Keep it up!!

Krys - how is that classroom coming along??

I struggle with consistency all year but it is really difficult when I go back to work. I am planning for it to be different this year! day 42 of my 10,000 steps a day streak. I have to get some things ready for the start of school but for now I am enjoying the summer. The weather here in NJ has been great the last three days. I had a relaxing day at the pool on Sunday, splashing around & reading. Yesterday morning I actually needed a sweater as I sat on the deck having my tea. Last night we drove to Belmar, which is less then 15 minutes from where we live, to have dinner by the ocean. Then we sat on the boardwalk for a while. I walked the boardwalk a little but with just 5 weeks out from his knee replacement, my DH, Chuck is still not up to doing much walking, especially since he had physical therapy. I didn't want to leave him sitting alone on the bench for too long, so I just took a short walk. We came home and continued enjoying the pleasant weather by sitting on the deck. It was great sleeping with the windows open tonight! It was suppose to rain today but it has turned out to be another perfect summer day.

Hello everyone----

I have been lurking around Sparkpeople for more years than I like to admit. I always get motivated during the summer months and then loose track of everything when school begins. I am implementing some very good habits this past month with tracking nutrition and trying to be consistent and now I am working on how to continue once school starts.

I am trying to keep myself more accountable this year. Your successes will help me do that.

Good luck to all as you prepare to head back to school.

Really good article! Thank you for sharing! I've been avoiding thinking about school - there's going to be so many changes that will be out of my control. I guess what I'm doing is mentally preparing myself!

A beautiful day here today!! It was 55 degrees this morning when I woke up and now at 2:00 it's only 73. Went for a nice long walk today with my Nordic poles. I'll sleep well tonight for sure!

Bombschell - you are doing emoticon on your walking streak!! Will you be able to keep doing it once school starts?? I hope so!!

Found this while I was doing my daily reading. I'm going to make a point to add it to my back to school information for our parents.

Thoughts?

S - Start slowly, set yourself up for success
T - Try new things, don't say you can't do something or don't like something before you have tried it.
A - Add movement everywhere, walking farther, calf raises while waiting in line, etc.
R - Realize that you are human & will make mistakes
T- Take time to recognize your successes - celebrate!

God, grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can and the wisdom to know it's me.

I've worked all weekend on paperwork - class list, rules, schedules, worksheets, etc. So that will be ready to go. I asked the principal to please have the custodians come and vacuum the roach dropping in the closets! I can handle pretty much anything else; but I am allergic to that! I'll see tomorrow.

I overslept this morning, but not by too much. Looked out the wondow - raining! But it wasn't a torential downpour, just a light drizzle, and besides, today was BOOK day! I carried each box up the basement stairs, then loaded it onto a dolly, then wheeled it out to the car, loaded all the boxes in my car, and then went to the College Woman's Club, where I unloaded them. The greeter at the door was SO nice! We had a lovely conversation, and she told me that through their book sales last year, they were able to raise $89,000 dollars for scholarships!! Wow...I'm glad I could contribute to that!

Had to have bloodwork done, so I did that, and I had one of the nicest compliments ever given to me there. There was a little boy there having to have blood drawn, and his cries were just heart wrenching! So I went to talk to him, and his Dad was okay with that, and between me talking to him, and the nurse talking to him, they managed to calm him down and get it done. The nurse wanted to know if I was a teacher, and I said I was. She said, that she knew that because of how I acted with the boy, that I understood he was afraid, and the psychology of the situation. Then she said something that I thought was really interesting. She said," you know, that is old-school and it's a shame they don't teach teachers how to do that anymore." We had a nice chat: she has 5 kids of her own, so she also understands what makes kids tick!!

Then I went out for breakfast. Well, it was after 11:00, by the time I was done with everything else, so it was more of a brunch. So nice!

Had a friend drop by this afternoon, and we chatted for hours!! Such a pleasant afternoon! But all of those boxes of books...I am really tired!

I hope everyone else has had a nice Saturday!!

Hi Team,
Sorry I've been missing this week. I had 3 full days of professional development workshops on strategies for teaching algebra and the Common Core. It was very informative but I left my house at 7 am and didn't get home until 4 pm at which point I started reviewing my notes and visiting websites. I was on information overload! Since I was sitting all day I had to also get in my 10,000 steps. Today is Day 38. With summer half over I had to do some reflecting, I wrote a blog on my progress and what I need to do from here. www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo

I'm sore from all my basement cleaning. I'm glad you got yours tackled too.
Our vet makes housecalls too. She also goes to people's homes when someone has to put their dog down. Some people seem to prefer having their pet at home. That was very nice. There are still a few of those nice people around!

Happy Friday!
I finished going through and packing up the books in the basement. I filled 7 letter sized (9x12) packing boxes. Now to bring them UP from the basement and take them out to the car!

I had an amazing NSV yesterday. You may remember that my kitty has been suffering with a fungal/bacterial skin issue. The veterinary dermatologist called yesterday, and well, to make a long story short, she came to my house!! Yes, there are still doctors that make house calls!! I gave her a jar of my jam, and I'm planning on writing a very nice thank you bread-n-butter note. Whenever someone else acts like a pain in the patootie, I'll remember how NICE others can be!!

Kim - once you get everything where you want it, probably it won't look so tiny. Having moved to your new school; makes things look different.

BUSYGRANNY5 - have a good time!

Karen - great idea! Yummy sounding.

LIVERGIVER - strawberries freeze nicely. I cut them up and put on cookie sheet (flash freeze) before I put in bag. They don't stick together so badly that way in my experience.

MAESTRACH - no I'm a 'professional substitute' these days! LOL I retired from teaching, but missed the children so bad I had to go back and work with them again.

Krys210- are you going to apply for the open position? There's nothing harder than starting the year for a class that you're not going to be with all year. Been there done that, Glad I get my own class this year.

Kim - great article! Thanks for sharing!

I made a "new" concoction today. I had some cherries in the frig that I wanted to use up before they went bad. I hate wasting fruit when it's in season, and yet I can't seem to stop buying it!! Anyway, I pureed cherries, blueberries and nectarines to make a smoothie, but then I froze it!! I call it "Cherri-Berrinni Slushie" and it's in the recipe data base. I imagine you could do it with ANY fruit. I just used what was on hand. NO added sugar - the fruit is sweet enough!

Worked in my basement for a couple of hours this morning, sorting books. I plan on donating them to The College Woman's Club on Saturday. They hold 2 huge book sales during the year and proceeds go towards scholarships. Then I got to sit outside in the sun for a bit. That felt good!

Our weather finally broke yesterday! I have been dying for weeks with the dumb heat :( I realized I have 1 month before school starts again, and I still have 9 summer school days left :(

Although on happier news- I am closer to getting a vacation and planning one!!!! YAY! I really need one, things are just getting crazy!

I have posted more goodies for sale on facebook via the Used Teaching Treasures Emporium. I honestly feel like I could fill tons of new teacher libraries! I own too many!!!! Hopefully I can finish getting through all of this soon!

Night all

All you folks with cooler weather; I am jealous! We have had a heat index over 100 for several days. I am ready to go visit Santa at the North Pole!!

It's only 65 degrees here. I've washed all my windows except 3, which hubby will help with tomorrow. I need a ladder for those.
Working a little more on cleaning out my basement. Stepson moves in Mon. for a month. Seems he waited way too long to find a new apt.

I worked on the basement some more today. I have to get this weight off and keep it off for once. I have 6 sizes of clothing in different tubs. Good grief!!!
Sometimes we need a little extra sleep. Glad you got it.
Hubby will be gone for 5 days next week (starting Wed.) so I'll be finishing up my classroom at that point. I'm also going to have some friends over on Friday. Most of them work at the school I'm leaving so we have to make a point to get together. I'm going to miss them!

We've had some beautiful weather lately - it's been wonderful after that heat wave we had!! Personally, it could stay sunny and cool-ish for a couple of weeks!! Went for a walk yesterday for 45 minutes (I really need to get a pedometer). Today, I just could not get out of bed, so I slept, and it felt good to do so. I guess the fresh air and walking did more than I thought! Going to tackle the boxes of books in the basement tomorrow. We have a local College Woman's Club that holds twice yearly book sales, and they will accept books AND give you a tax receipt for them. tgif everyone!

If you are on Facebook, you may be interested in a page called "Teachers With a Sense of Humor." Today's caption was perfect!

You know you are a teacher when...you work all weekend and every vacation on school stuff!

Deedaye - don't you love your Fitbit? Sometimes I am too competitive with myself, however! Hope you have a successful visit with your doctor.
Livergiver - Glad your classes were good and useful?
Rdefassi - Ah, lockdowns, shelter in place, emergency evacuations. The life of a teacher!

I missed one of my lessons today, due to the student being with the counselor for behavior issues during the lock down drill :( Gosh- craziness! Although, working out after school was great! Plus my weigh in this week was down another 1lb!!!! Have a great Friday all!!!!
