Himalayan Salt

A long time ago, layers of sea salt crystals deep within the Himalayan mountain range were blanketed by lava. Many experts believe that this lava coating has helped keep the salt clean, pure, and free of environmental pollutants. Guacamole - Avoid "guacamole dip" and "guacamole-styled dip"

While the guacamole you make at home or order at a restaurant contains plenty of avocados, the stuff youíre buying at the store might not have any at all. If you find guacamole on a store shelf and the label says "guacamole dipĒ"or "guacamole style dip" take a look at the ingredients. If the nutrition label has water as the first ingredient and contains avocado powder, youíre not getting the real deal. Avoid buying an impostor by going to the refrigerated section of your store or grabbing the ingredients to make it yourself.

Jose Garces' Guacamole

2 Servings

Ingredients:
1 1/2 avocados
2 tbsp Spanish onions
1 tbsp roasted jalapenos
1 tbsp cilantro
2 tbsp lime juice
salt, to taste

Directions:
1. Mash and mix ingredients in a molcajete (stone mortar and pestle).
2. Serve immediately

Tip: Iron Chef winner Jose Garces is an expert on authentic Latin cuisine. According to Chef Garces, the biggest guac mistake people make is using avocados that are too hard; using ripe avocados will result in soft, creamy guacamole. Fidgeting Is Good Medicine!

When you are sitting for a long stretch, like at work or on a flight, experts advise walking every hour to reduce the risk of dangerous blood clots. But fidgeting may be a good alternative. In a University of Missouri study people who sat for 3 hours but tapped one foot for 60 seconds every 4 minutes had an increase in blood flow in that leg that was enough to prevent a decline in arterial function, a risk factor for blood clots.

James Brown is a lecturer in biology and biomedical science at Aston University. To keep cognition sharp, aim for 97 grams of dairy (the amount in 4 oz. of cheese or yogurt) daily, advise researchers in the journal of the American Geriatric Society. They tracked 1,081 adults and found that doing so cuts Alzheimerís risk by 61 percent. The study authors credit dairyís brain-healthy nutrients like vitamin B-12 and whey protein. A 2-Minute Walk May Counter the Harms of Sitting

Robin Marcus, PT, PhD associate professor of physical therapy at the University of Utah Health Science states that two minutes is about how much time you should spend strolling every hour to combat the harmful effects of sitting. Looks like what Grandma said was right all along!

A new study out of the Yale School of Medicine found that the old saying "feed a cold, starve a fever" is pretty much SPOT ON! The researchers found that when you have a viral infection like a cold or the flu, eating helps you recover and get through it.

But when you have a fever because of a bacterial infection like a staph infection or food poisoning, eating actually makes things worse. Scientists say to avoid sugary foods and stick to small portions of things like chicken and yogurt.

Women who eat full-fat yogurt once a day are less likely to become depressed.
A Spanish study shows that women who had full-fat yogurt at least seven times a week were a third less likely to develop depression in the following decade. The reason why, however, is not known, but earlier research suggested that the brain sends signals to the gut, which is why stress and other emotions can cause gastrointestinal symptoms.

Low-fat yogurt did not have the same effect. Nearly 15-thousand men and women were assessed with questionnaires at the start of the study and then again after ten years.

Makeover Your Milkshake

Swap out your milkshake for a healthy avocado smoothie. Avocados make fruit smoothies creamier so you can skip out on the extra calories and fat you would get from a milkshake and still satisfy your sweet tooth.



Makes 2

Ingredients:
1/2 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled
1/2 large banana
1/4 cup (60g) low-fat vanilla yogurt
1/4 cup ice (about 2 cubes), plus more for serving
3/4 to 1 can (125ml) coconut water, depending on your preferred thickness
1 tsp agave nectar (light or dark)
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, plus more for sprinkling

Directions:
Combine all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth and frothy. Sprinkle additional cinnamon on top and serve.

1. Stretch your arm out in front of you with your thumb pointing up
